Calphalon Contemporary 21-Piece Knife Block Set

Calphalon Contemporary 21-Piece Knife Block SetAfter researching knives for a while, I chose this set. For the price, and all that you get, who could ask for anything more! The weight and balance of these knives is great. They are very sharp to start out with, and have maintained a nice edge. If you are looking for a great set that will not set you back $500-$1000 or more, this is the one. To be sure that any knife will work for you, go to a store and hold different makes and models. If the knife is not comfortable in your hands, you won't use it. As I said, these knives are great for me! My favorite is the 8" Chef's knife.

Now to the negative...

The block takes up alot of counter space, so you may consider the 17 piece set if space is an issue. They are made in China, but they are forged from German high carbon no stain steel. The steak knives that come with the set are just okay, but the set is complete and I don't need anything else.

I would recomend these to anyone looking for a new cutlery set! Enjoy...

"21 pieces" is a block of wood, a fork, a pair of scissors, a sharpener, eight steak knives, and nine actual kitchen knives.

Starting with those nine knives: they are reasonably typical in design with comfortable, well-shaped handles and convienent labels on the pommel. They cut well out of the box (not as good as my Shun's, but far less expensive as well), and I highly recommend them at this point in the market segment.

If you don't spend a lot of time prepping, but have money enough that you want to get a "good set", or if you need great knives but cannot afford a good Wustof or Shun line, then these may be excellent. In my case, I've used them to make sure I have a full set of knives and then added my couple of most-used knives (chef, steak, slicer) from higher-end.

Where I actually find fault, however, is with the steak-knives in this set. Firstly: they are stamped, not forged; and are a bit small-handeled for my taste as well. Worst of all, they have decided to put deep serration (I'd really say they look more like tines) along the leading half of what is the cutting surface. In a meat like pork, they tend to tear some off and hold on to it.

In summary: great kitchen knives pared with sub-par steak knives. Buy the kitchen-knife set and then get a decent set of steak knives seperately.

They are sharp and feel good in the hand but they are not made of the good stainless steel. They are made of "stain resistant" steel which can rust. Ours has some rust stain spots on them already because we did not dry them off well after washing. The quality is not the greatest either, our 8 inch slicer was slightly curved when new. Other than that, for the price you get alot of knives and they are sharp and work well.

I should have bought a smaller but higher quality set.

My wife really hates them now.

This is a great set of cutlery. My wife and I use something out of this set on a daily basis. We had one of the 7 inch Santoku knives to begin with and bought the whole set we liked it so much.
