Diamond Cut Supreme 2pc Kitchen Shear Set

Diamond Cut Supreme 2pc Kitchen Shear SetWe seem to go through kitchen shears like they are paper towels in this house, but these have lasted and lasted. They are sharp and the added jar openers are an added bonus. They cut up crab legs and chicken with ease.

We kept losing our expensive kitchen shears when children would run off with them for various projects, so I decided to get this pair of expendable kitchen shears. They are more cheaply made than I expected but do work.

The product picture showing the package with the red background is exactly what I got. The two shears are slightly different. The "poultry" shears have a little slot which we use for things like flower stems or green bean ends. I doubt they would cut through a chicken leg, but we haven't actually tried it. They might get through a joint between the bones though. Unfortunately, since the blades don't line up perfectly, the notch will often catch. I can only use the tips for cutting, such as last night opening a frozen spinach bag.

The other "all-purpose" shears is the same but without the notch. Both are 8" long with 2.75" blades and have white hexagonal plastic covers on the rivet joint. There are notches along one blade but these are only for decoration; the cutting edges are straight, not serrated.

There doesn't seem to be much if any quality control at "Diamond Cut Supreme". The blades on our poultry shears don't even touch as you close them until about half way down the blades. The all-purpose shears don't quite finish closing, leaving the tip slightly open. But both are sharp and can cut through plastic blister packs with ease.

If you only need one the all-purpose shears are available alone: Diamond Cut Multi-Purpose Kitchen Shears.

These are (of course) made in China. There is a Dallas Texas address for warranty service listed on the package; you must include a check in "an amount equal to what you are paying to return the defective product." Obviously your cost would be more than what you are paying to buy these.

These are OK for disposable purposes, but if you want nicer kitchen shears, try Chicago Cutlery Centurion Shears. Ours were great until they ran off. I also bought Betty Crocker Scissors / Kitchen Shears from a dollar store, and even they are much more smooth and better made than these.

Bought these to replace a similar one that died after years of abuse, brand initials c.c. Unfortunately these two have no edge at all, they seem sturdy, though you can't detach the halves to clean, but doesn't really matter if I can't manage to cut a piece of string with them they won't ever get enough use to get dirty.

I bought these as backup for the kitchen since our scissors always seem to disappear. I tried using them all last week on different items in the kitchenbags, paper, produce, and it honestly could do the job at all.

The only part of the scissors that actually cuts is the first 1/2 inch.

Seriouslydollar store kids scissors would cut better than these.

the only thing I dont like this that the shears are a bit short and the handles are not comfortable to hold. I do like that they dont come apart. I hate the meat scissors that come apart they always seem to break apart and go falling towards your foot.

Yamazaki Old Denmark 3 Piece Serve Set

Yamazaki Old Denmark 3 Piece Serve SetI love Yamazaki, especially this Old Denmark pattern. Hafnia is also fantastic. These are made in Japan and the quality shows. Handles are a tad short by 1/2 to 1 inch but overall, this is a great set. I just wish they would stop selling the butter knife as it is not required.

Hagerty 19100 6-Piece Place Setting Roll, Blue

Hagerty 19100 6-Piece Place Setting Roll, BlueWe purchased our solid silver place settings and serving pieces in 1998. At the same time, we purchased Hagerty bags for most, but not all pieces. These bags do a very good job of keeping the silver safe from tarnish, oxidation and corrosion. Three years ago (12/10/07) we purchased additional bags for 4 place settings and 4 service pieces. About a year and a half later, we were appalled to find 4 place settings and 4 service pieces not tarnished (dark brown), but corroded (greenish blue patina), whereas 8 place settings and 4 serving pieces kept in the older bags were pristine. We did not track which bags were related to the corrosion at that time, but suspected the new bags (all with a "made in China" tag). We carefully polished and stored all the silver. On opening them for use for Thanksgiving 2010, 4 place settings and 4 serving pieces were corroded again, this time we know for sure they were stored in the new bags. Needless to say we are very disappointed in the 2007 purchase and Hagerty's failure maintain a quality product.

UPDATE March 2011. The President of Hagerty responded to a letter with an apology and advised me that they no longer use Chinese suppliers for these bags. She sent me replacements for all the subject bags. I have put some silver in the new bags. If these are the same as the older bags, I will be able to report success in about a year.

UPDATE November 2012. Thanksgiving 2012 was the first opportunity to use our silver since using the replacement bags. I am pleased to report that there was absolutely no sign of discoloration on any of the pieces. Hagerty now again has my complete confidence.

These cutlery rolls are absolutely the only way to store your silver flatware. Instead of stacking your cutlery on top of each other as happens in storage boxes, each item goes into its own storage slot and each pouch holds an entire place setting all neatly rolled up in silver cloth.

Wooden storage boxes are pretty, but this method has truly helped prevent scratches caused from "stacking".

Instead, I simply place all the pouches in the drawer of my china cabinet and next time I am setting a formal table, I simply reach in an pull out how ever many pouches I am going to need.

I absolutely love this method of storing my silverware. My set was brand new in 1965 when I got married. I love to entertain and I am one to use my good china and silver as often as possible. Yet despite the many uses over the years...storing each place setting in a separate storage pouch has helped to keep my set looking "gently used" over the years.

Now I will soon be purchasing a set for our daughter's silver set.

If you entertain frequently and like to use your good sterling, you know how important it is to keep your place settings reasonably free of heavy tarnish. This little item will not only do that, but also protect your silverware from scratches. Don't hesitate to order -Nancy's ships very quickly.

I am writing to confirm Aquanut's findings.

I bought this setting roll at Bed Bath & Beyond, in order to ensure I recieved a "Made in USA" roll. My sterling silverware is made by a highly reputable producer (Reed and Barton), and all cleaned at the same time, using Hagerty silver polish.

It has been about two weeks, and the silverware stored in this roll is already noticeably tarnished. By contrast, in the same cabinet drawer, wrapped in a no-name microfiber cloth, the silver was pristine.

After checking the Amazon reviews on the Hagerty zippered hollowware page, I noticed this defective cloth problem seems to be widespread, and common to both the USA and China versions.

Update: Hagerty replied to a letter I wrote them earlier, and sent me a Made In USA replacement roll. I will update here in a few months with any findings since then.

Update (6 months later): Silver in the new roll looks good so far. No noticeable corrosion at all! Bumping up the stars to reflect the new roll.

Update (1 year later): Silver still looks good. Bumping the stars. Great roll, and the company clearly stands behind their products. Just be sure to double check your silver and make sure you get one of the new Made in USA batches.

Oneida Flight 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4

Oneida Flight 20-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set, Service for 4I already had a service for 8 in the Oneida Flight pattern. I needed more. While I was washing my new silverware, I was disappointed to find that the quality is not the same as my original pieces. I checked and Oneida no longer makes their product in the United States. OK, I accept that. What bothers me more is the quality is not nearly the same. Especially, with the knives the weight and even the design is different. If you did not own any of the Flight pattern previously, you might be satisfied. I am not.

I've owned this flatware for four years and have not been happy with the quality. All but the knives are thin guage metal. In fact, I've had to tell my children not to use the spoons for hard ice cream cups because they were bending. The surface has held up OK, with the exception of some minor marks from dishwasher detergents. I expected a better product from Oneida.

I forgot that I had put them on my wedding registry! So when I received a set of these as a wedding gift, I was pleasantly surprised. They have held up great throughout the years and I still absolutely love the simple, but elegant pattern to them. The butter knives are a good weight making them comfortable to use, I just wish they (the knives) didn't take up so much room in the silverware tray/drawer.

My husband and I registered for the Oneida flight pattern. We just celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary. I'm very happy with the weight of the product. Forks never bend, spoons only do a tad when I try to pry really really hard ice cream out of the container.. but I should really be using an ice cream dipper and not a spoon... so that's my fault. Showing a little wear... but I consider their wear perfectly acceptable. I am purchasing the Flight pattern for my inalws for Christmas.

I had this set already and was ordering an additional set to add too it. The knives are thinner and all the items had a big fat made in china stamped on it. I was very disappointed with it. They don't feel like as good of quality as my original set direct from Oneida. I would recommend ordering direct from the company because if you order here, you are not getting the same quality. I'm sure nobody else would notice the difference but me, however, it is really upsetting to know I could have gotten flatware that matched exactly what I already owned.

I've always had flatware made by Oneida. It's attractive, easy to care for, reasonably priced, and durable. A few years ago, I found a new pattern I could acquire using coupons from a well-known cake mix (I know I'm showing my age). The coupons were discontinued before I collected all the place settings I needed. I was heart broken.

Flash forward a few years. I finally got a computer and discovered Amazon. My life changed. A few weeks ago I wondered if I could find that pattern or a similar one. Eureka! A pattern so similar to mine, I could hardly tell the difference. I ordered five place settings.

They arrived ahead of schedule and in perfect condition. Nobody will ever know it's not the same pattern. I can invite people to my house again. Life is good. Thank you Amazon and Finest Flatware.

Calphalon Katana Stainless-Steel 6-Inch Chef's Knife

Calphalon Katana Stainless-Steel 6-Inch Chef's KnifeThis knife feels great in the hand and arrives very sharp.

I am not sure what is the point of the layers of Damascene. The last half inch before the edge is presumably is where the action takes place and it is good, old-fashioned clear stainless. The Damascene pattern is certainly attractive.

Despite report you may have heard to the contrary, the edge of the blade is not straight like a Santoku knife. It curves, more-or-less the same amount as a Henckels chef knife. Having said that, I guess if you are a die-hard chopper you might prefer a big belly Wusthof.

The bolster is very unobtrusive, which I like. The handle is comfortable and tilts up a little, sort of like the Global knives but less extreme.

Did I already say this knife arrives very sharp. Right out of the box you can cut through the stem of a banana almost as if it was celery. Don't let your 8-year old use this knife for cutting frozen bagels ;)

All-in-all it is a really nice knife that I would use all the time if my wife had not taken such a posessive interest in it.

I found this knife in a local store and used a coupon to reduce the price to give the knife a try. It is the sharpest knife I have ever bought or used, and I have used a good number over the years including various German and other excellent brands. The balance and appearance are outstanding. The layered steel is attractive and interesting, but I don't know how much it contributes to the actual cutting, but it looks great. The tapered bolster reminds the user to grip the knife properly (if you are of the "pinch" grip persuasion). It is very easy to use with all kinds of food and cutting chores. It has held its edge with pretty frequent use for well over a year. I like to keep my knives sharp, and so far, this has not needed sharpening. I have bought other Katana knives piecemeal since purchasing this one and have really had good luck and experiences with all except the 5.5" serrated knife: it seemed to shred rather than slice/saw, so I returned it. I have five other Katana knives and plan to build my set piece by piece. I have had absolutely no rusting or cleaning problems, although I do try to clean all my knives as soon as possible after use. Highly recommended for sharpness, balance, use, design, and appearance.

Purchased one for $33 and love it. I've had the Calphalon essential set for about 3 years and have been happy with the balance and handling. I mainly use the 6" utility and the 3 1/2" pairing knife. However,I found the thickness of the blade on 7" chef knife to make it slightly dull for me on many task. The katana knife is in a entire different league from Calphalon's orginal set. It cuts with very little effort and has great balance.

Admittedly, I am a bit of a knife-buying nut. I love kitchen knives and own chef's knives and santuko knives from Wusthof, Henckels, Kyocera and Furi.

This Calphalon Katana 6-inch chef's knife is incredibly sharp and it feels really good in the hand balance-wise. I like the way the handle is shaped, it is very comfortable and the bolster is ingenious. I love the way it looks too! For the price, I'd say you can't go wrong.

I really like it a lot! I have only had it for a few weeks though, but

it seems to be of very good quality and hopefully we'll see how well it resharpens when the need arises.

I have owned countless knifes that claimed to be "good". Needless to say, almost every knife I have owned has been a disgrace until now. The Calphalon 6" Chef (knife) is a superb all purpose knife with several notable features.

First off, the Japanese steel construction is not only very attractive, but also extremely durable. The knife is relatively light and is embedded with a very comfortable, yet ergonomic handle. Note, the knife feels well balanced and non-strenuous in your hands, even under various vigorous chopping, cutting tasks.

I used the knife to cut several vegetables, raw meat, along with raw fish; so far the knife cuts through meat as if it was butter. I had exceptional control while gouging through my various products. You must be sure to wash and dry the knife immediately after use (only hand washing is permitted). Furthermore, this knife is relatively inexpensive; considering the other brands such as shun, this knife is a bargain. Lastly, this product is backed by Calphalon's lifetime warranty.

All in all an excellent product, and I would highly recommend it. The knife has exceptional sharpness, craftsmanship, and style, definitely worth the money.

Ginkgo Le Prix Cocktail Forks, Set of 4

Ginkgo Le Prix Stainless Steel Cocktail Forks, White, Set of 4These are good looking and versatile. Great for seafood, meat and cheese tray forks or small hors d'oeuvers. This Le Prix flatware is well built, stronger and slightly heavier than most flatware with plastic components. The forks feel solid, not flimsy or cheap.

Cocktail forks? Bah! These are the best children's forks anywhere. Most forks made for kids are designed by overly paranoid legal departments and are more like serrated spoons that can't actually be used to stab real food.

These are perfectly sized for little hands, they're well balanced, they have real tines that easily stab food, and they've got a nice curvature to them to teach the child how to properly turn the fork after stabbing to pick up their food properly.

While you're at it, get a matching set of spoons. Much to the surprise of many parents, the spoons have real bowls in them that actually hold food! Yes, even soup!

I searched for more forks like these for years as my son was growing up (we had 2, but don't know where we got them) and searching for flatware labeled "children's" brought nothing but grief. I was literally jumping for joy when I finally found these on Amazon.

Alaskan Ulu Knife w/Etched Handle Outlining State, Flag & Map of Alaska

Alaskan Ulu Knife w/Etched Handle Outlining State, Flag & Map of AlaskaGreat for making chopped salads! You wouldn't believe the compliments I get on my tuna and egg salads; and I would swear it was in-part due to the Ulu Knife. I like to chop/cut my solids (tuna, onion, celery, etc.) separately; and then when I have combined them I cut-through them once again w/the Ulu Knife. I really think it melds the flavors and makes the texture turn-out perfectly. Many people have asked me if I purchased my salads at upscale delis the secret is IN my Ulu! I've given this as a gift too; it was really appreciated.

Wusthof Gourmet 6-Piece Steak-Knife Set

Wusthof Gourmet 6-Piece Steak-Knife SetI have had these for a few years. After the first year one of the tips broke off. A couple of years later another tip broke off, this time cutting an apple.

I don't have the warranty to know where to return these to, so I am stuck with them, but seriously I just want some better knives rather than paying to ship the bad ones somewhere and wait for a possible refund.

Even through I prefer Wustof to Henkels on the high end stuff, we have a cheap set of Henkels stamped steak knives that seem more sturdy and cut better than these.

These are not what you'd expect from Wusthof. The Wusthof symbol on the handle is a STICKER (!!!) which bleaches out after washing. Also, after 1 months use and washing, we're getting rust spots. While these knives are sharp, they are not holding up appearance wise. Very disappointed.

I have a set of these steak knives and love them.

Unlike most inexpensive steak knives these knives are fine edge and not serrated. I like the cut of fine edge knives. They make clean cuts without shreading. These are stamped knives which are a lot less expensive than the forged Classic knives in my set but they look the same and for how much they are used they perform well at half the price of the forged knives. I have never had the rusting problem, but I hand wash all my knives. These are not stainless steel. I heard once that most of the time when knives rust it is because they are put in the dishwasher. The dishwasher leaves metal deposits on your flatware. When those deposits dry they turn to rust. Come to find out it is usually your dishwasher that is rusting when this happens. I never stick good knives in the dishwasher.

These "fine" knives doesn't stay sharp as long my Chicago Cutlery steak knives and the handles crack at the rivets. The logo-labels peel off leaving the adhesive on the handle. If they had a different sticker on the handle, they would be one quarter the price. I have a full set of Wusthof knives and there is no comparison.

These are quite flimsy and develop rust spots extremely easily. Not the quality one would expect from this company. We have several of Wusthof Classic's line (Chef's, paring, utility, etc) have found them to be sturdy, true, well-balanced in the hand and have held up very well over the past 3 years in our busy kitchen. We didn't expect these steak knives to be of the same quality, but they were suprisingly low quality for the brand and the cost.

Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Wide Cook's Knife

Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Wide Cook's KnifeI prefer the eight-inch knife over a ten for weight reasons and the wide series gives lots of knuckle-slide area for repeated chopping tasks. I've owned Wusthof-Trident knives since before graduating from culinary school over ten years ago. In fact, I still own all but one that I still use daily (One was stolen). The knives hold an edge better than any other I've used (and I've tried 98% of what's out there), stand up to continuous use and are comfortable enough to use all day long. You'll never be sorry owning Wusthof-Trident knives.

I have a good collection of high-end knives dating from 10-15 years ago, and in my opinion, this is one of the best 8" cook's knives on the market. I prefer the extra width and heft of the 4584/20's wider blade over the narrower and lighter 4582/20 model. This knife has good heft and the handle is very comfortable and I prefer this handle over the Grand Prix's Also, because of the extra width of this knife, the edge is very thin, and that makes the blade feel very sharp when cutting vegetables.

There are knives on the market today with fancier steels, such as VG-10 on the Kershaws and "Trizor 10X" on the Chef's Choice. I have not tried these other fancy knives, and I am even comfortable in believing their claims that these new steel formulations will hold an edge much better. The fancy steels have a Rockwell-C hardness of 59-60, compared to the Wusthof's 56, but when it comes to balance, feel, and just plain old cutting performance, I doubt the Kershaws and the Chef's Choice knives can beat this Wusthof wide blade 4584/20.

As for this knife's edge-holding ability, I do pamper my knives and I don't dump them in the sink or dishwasher. I am careful with using knives on only wooden cutting boards. As such, my knives stay very sharp for a long time. A few seconds of touching up on the steel once every couple of weeks is all that's required to keep it ultra razor sharp.

Maybe the VG-10 and Trizor 10x steel knives don't need to be touched up once every couple of weeks to stay sharp? Somehow, I doubt that.

I purchased the Wusthof Classic 8 Inch cooks knife based on the manufactuers reputation for the highest quality products. This knife did not disappoint! First of all the balance is perfect, and the grip is very comfortable. After using it for 7 months now, the blade remains razor sharp. I have used it for a number of cooking related chores and it has become the one knife that I use for almost every job, from chopping, to slicing, to carving meats. The only care that is required is to use a steel to maintain the edge. I highly recommend this knife!

Read Best Reviews of Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Wide Cook's Knife Here

This knife is the real deal. I purchased mine at a knife store. It was recommended very highly by the shopkeeper who was an avid knife enthusiast and cook. He told me it was his favorite and as soon as I held it, it quickly became mine. I previously own Henckels 5-star which are also very nice, but his knife surpasses the Henckels in quality, weight, and balance. The extra wide blade is the kicker, it really allows for some some serious slicing and rocking of the blade without busting my knuckles. The downside to this however, is that it won't fit in my knife block, as others have mentioned.

Talk about sharp... Sure, every quality knife is very sharp when they are brand new, but this thing?! I was playing around slicing an orange so thin you could see right through each slice. I mean, this thing was cutting the atoms in half! Also, I really like the angle of the edge. At the top, it is thick and manly, and then it tapers down to a razor edge, seriously. Handle is comfortable for me. I am a big guy. I must say, this knife might be a little too big for a very small person, it really depends on your preference. This knife will definitely be in my collection forever.

Want Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Wide Cook's Knife Discount?

A year and a half later and it's still a dream to use. Still sharp, everyday use. It's the only knife I use. I cook every meal with fresh veggies and fruit and it just keeps going. Still makes me want to keep chopping and has kept me eating healthier because of it. Can say enough about the quality and versatility of this knife.

6-month update--Still razor sharp, still the best knife I've ever used. It's still a pleasure every time I use it, which is every day for just about everything. It does it all, and it does it well. Fingers fit so well on it. I feel much safer than any previous knife. It's a joy to use and still makes me want to chop more veggies and more herbs.

Incredibly sharp, incredibly balanced, incredibly smooth surface feel, incredibly weighted, incredibly smooth rocking action/blade taper. Fits my hand so well around the smooth bolster. The extra width is so much nicer for keeping the fingers out of the way. The heft makes the job that much easier. Smooth as silk rocking motion. Yes, the cutting board required clean-up after use. I'm replacing my wife. This is so much nicer than the Henckel's chef's knife I've used in the past. I do hope and expect it to hold an edge as long as the Henckels. In all other respects of the handle and bolter feel and rocking motion, this thing leaves the Henckels kicking its can down the block. Not even close. The bolster and spine are smoother and shaped for a better grip angle. The handle shorter in transition with the perfect taper for a comfortable grip. It leads you into a proper pinch grip whereas the Henckels pulls you back onto the handle and makes the pinch awkward, unsafe, and even painful along the spine. The Wide version here is the proper depth that all chef's knives should be, about 1/2" taller than my previous chef's knife. Cut a carrot so thin you can see the logo, over and over again. So glad I spent the money, and the extra on the wide. You won't be able to pry this thing out of my hand. So stoked with an awesome new Boos board, a new Wusthof GP paring knife, and this Chef's knife. Wish I would have done it sooner. I would have been eating healthier more often and enjoying the process.

Kyocera Revolution Mini Santoku, 4-inch

Kyocera Revolution Series 4-Inch Mini Santoku Knife, Black Handle with White BladeThe Kyoto Ceramic company makes all kinds of stuff out of ceramics. From circuit boards and transmitters in mobile phones to excellent writing pens with sturdy ceramic tips, they've got their brand of excellence in everything. Their entire line of ceramic knives is no different!

Being hardened ceramic, this knife and its brethren cannot be rusted and the blade seems to stay sharper a lot longer because the edge doesn't need to be trued like steel. It's non-reactive to acids and bases and you can easily clean its surface with warm, soapy water. The weight balance and blade control are excellent and the knife seems to dance as it cuts. I am really impressed with the overall quality of the blade itself.

There is only one caveat, but it is a BIG one: the blade WILL chip if you are not careful! Cutting on surfaces other than cutting boards (i.e.-plates or pizza stones) can cause tiny chips in the edge. Improper sharpening (you should get a sharpener specific for a ceramic knife and use it exactly as instructed) and throwing the knife in drawers without a blade cover will also chip the blade edge. Dishwashing is a no-no, since the edge might be damaged, as well. If you get some chips or nicks, the blade will still cut, but the edge will slowly become serrated instead of smooth.

I recommend getting a proper sharpener, bamboo cutting board and blade guard for this or any other ceramic knife so that you can make the knife last for generations!

A good buy, overall, but only if you take care of it.

I've tried traditionally made, good steel blades by Wusthoff and Henckel. I enjoy using those blades, and hate going back to cheap blades. As big a difference is between cheap metal blades to good metal blades, the difference between steel and ceramic is many times greater.

You'll spend the first week just wanting to find items to cut. It cuts effortlessly through everything. I found it best on things that are soft (or mushy) but where you still want precision. You can get detailed control with any type of uncooked meat (chicken breast). Dissecting tomatoes at any stage of ripeness is easy.

A couple notes of caution:

1. Watch your hands. I cut my finger with one of these blades. It was so sharp I didn't feel it at first.

2. Don't let beginners use. For the reason above primarily, but also because they'll try it in unattended ways that damage the blade.

3. Watch for chipping. The blade can be sharpened, but you want to be somewhat cautious. The tradeoff with an extremely hard blade is it becomes a little less malleable/more brittle.

This is a must for anyone who longs for a sharp knife.

For many people this type of sharpness is unknown, and should be experienced

and enjoyed. Sharpening should be left to Kyocera, as they can do the best possible job, and this knife should only need to be sharpened about every 5-10 years based upon how often you use it. I agree with the chipping liability but this is a small price to pay to have an INCREDIBLE knife in the kitchen, be sure to keep your eyes on what you are slicing!

Ever since our daughter received one of these ceramic knives for a gift a year ago, my husband has wanted one. Although expensive, they are great in carving and lightweight. Our daughter's knife by Kyocera has the wooden handle and is twice expensive and to us, isn't worth the extra money.

When I first got it, it was like a lightsaber. I could trim chicken with one hand. That lasted about a week or two.

Yes, they do dull... BUT... even though it's not lightsaber sharp anymore, it's still head and shoulders sharper than any other knife I have.

So yeah, it's awesome, but not quite as mind blowingly, reality shattering awesome as some would lead you to believe.

Kuhn Rikon PushPan

Kuhn Rikon PushPan, 8-InchI make cheese cake often since I LOVE it. And I have three springform pans a 10", a 9" and a 7". One of my recipes calls for the cake to be baked in a hot water bath but first the pan must be wrapped in a double layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil to keep the water from seeping into the cake. I've made this cake a half dozen times and the foil wrapping is such a pain in the butt and also if you do not do it correctly, the water seeps in making the cake a soggy mess and wasting a lot of very expensive ingredients.

I saw in a catalog a new-fangled cheesecake pan that did not have the spring latch on the side. It has a rubber gasket rimming the pan bottom to seal it tight. To remove the cake it said to place the pan on top of something sturdy that was taller than the cake pan and then push down on the sides of the pan. No need to use a knife to loosen the edges one little push and the pan bottom with the cake on it would slip right out. I doubted that this would work but still I wanted to try it and so I ordered the Kuhn Rikon PushPan on amazon.com for $30.

I was very nervous about using this pan and so I first tested it with a normal (no hot water bath) cheesecake. I made the recipe posted below. The pan worked just as they said it would cake slipped right out. Even better there was no dripping of butter onto the bottom of my oven. Loved that. One problem however I ordered the 9" pan and made the same recipe I've been using in my old springform 9" pans for 30 years. The Kuhn Rikon pan was too small to hold all the batter so I put the overflow into a small bowl and baked it too.

The yesterday I got brave and decided to test its water-tight claim. Made the chocolate-swirl cheese cake that gets baked in the hot water bath 4 cream cheese $8; sour cream $2, and sugar, eggs, chocolate an expensive endeavor. Once again though the 9" recipe I have made many times before did not fit in this pan. The overflow this time almost filled my 7" cheesecake pan. But both cakes looked great when I took them out of the oven. Then the waiting three hours to cool and then the overnight refrigeration.

I could not wait until suppertime and so I decided to have a piece for breakfast. Cake slipped easily out of the push pan and wonder of wonders the cake was not soggy or wet at all.

So the pan works it's just not big enough for normal 9" recipes. Rather than try to redo all my 9" cheesecake recipes, I am going to write to the company and ask that they exchange this one for the 10" pan.... or give me my money back. I like the pan just not the size.

I am an accomplished baker; I bake everyday and am currently working on a cookbook. I have made hundreds of cheesecakes using a traditional springform pan. Whenever I make cakes using a water bath I have always wrapped the pan in 2 layers of foil. This has always worked for me.

I was excited to try the new Push Pan and did so for the first time yesterday. I made Junior's New York Cheesecake. You cannot imagine how disappointed I was when I removed the ring from the Push Pan. The base of my cheesecake was entirely WET! All around the sides, where the red silicone ring is, was completely drenched!

I followed the instructions completely; pushed down the base into the pan, made sure it was secure and even. The cheesecake came out delicious, however, the crust was soggy; I do not recommend this pan to be used without wrapping it well in foil before putting in a water bath.

However, I must say that the unmolding of the cake was very easy and the sides were nice and smooth; the bottom wet, but smooth...

Buyer, beware. If you do decide to buy this pan, WRAP the pan with foil in the traditional manner!!!!!

I used this for a really squidgy chocolate cake and a Vanilla & Ginger cheesecake. I didn't trust it at first so I ran water into it and nothing leaked so I dried and greased it an hoped for the best.

It worked perfectly. I'd love this in different shapes such as a PushPan Heart Shape.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program 9" pan

I have a large collection of well used springform pans from cheap tinned steel to LaForme's expensive "leak-proof" enameled steel. They all get the job done but leak. Even double wrapping the bottom of those pans with heavy foil when baking cheesecakes in a water bath would be no guarantee water would not find a way in. So I was very anxious to try this pan and immediately put it to the test by baking a cheesecake in a water bath with no foil wrapping. It worked like a charm, the cheesecake was perfectly dry.

This pan also is also constructed from very heavy weight metal; 19 oz. versus a typical 9" tinned steel pan at 9 ounces. So you don't get over-baking at the edges that you do with a thinner pan. My cheese cake was evenly cooked and perfectly flat from edge to edge. Removing it from the pan was no problem and if you line the bottom of the pan with some buttered parchment it makes it easy to remove your dessert from the bottom piece.

I also used it to make a quiche and when blind baking the crust I didn't get melted fat leaking from the bottom of the pan like I do with traditional pans.

Although this pan looks like it has the exact same dimensions as a standard 9" springform pan; 9" x 3" because the bottom of the pan when fully seated rests 1/2" above the bottom you get about an 8 cup capacity versus 9 cup in a traditional springform pan. So if your favorite recipes tend to fill up your pan I would size up to a 10" or plan for a separate pan for the overflow.

I love the pan and hope at some point they also offer it in a 4" size for individual portions.

Kyocera Revolution Series 4-1/2-Inch Utility Knife And Peeler Gift Set

Kyocera Revolution Series 4-1/2-Inch Utility Knife And Peeler Gift Set, BlackThis is very sharp knife! Comfortable handle, useful shape of the blade, sharp, makes precise fine cuts. Everything one would expect from a ceramic knife. With all the pros and cons. Kyocera will resharpen this knife for a fee (around $10), but I can't comment on that because I didn't have the knife long enough.

The peeler is also very good, with ceramic peeling blade.

I would definitely recommend this set as an addition to you fine-steel cutlery block.

Love the knife....stays sharp (forever), just not practical for twisting operation (such as deboning chicken), since the knife will break.

I just got mine in the mail today and the first thing I did is start cutting stuff.

I used all of my old cutting knives (7 year old cutco) and compared it against this one... HOLY C>R>A>P!!!!

I effortlessly cut through a raw potato!!! I cut a piece of the potato and laid it on its side (a circular cross section). Then i proceeded to make 1-2 MM cuts across the entire cross section. I had 50 mini fries that were super thin.

Then I started to cut apples the long way (if the core is North/South I was cutting east to west). Basically these slices look exactly what you get from "apple chips" bags. I bet if I let them sit out and dry they would taste pretty good. Also another cool thing: the apples were dead white, they did not start to turn brown and oxidize...this knife is amazing. I'm buying one for my dad for his birthday.

The knife is great, but the peeler only peels in one direction so is unsuitable for lefties who peel using an outward motion. When I looked at the peeler I thought it would be simple enough to just flip the blade around to make it work for me. Wrong! Whoever designed the peeler designed it so that the blade cannot be reversed because the holes that the blade goes into are different diameters on each side. It's a terrible design decision that'll make me think twice about buying handed devices from this manufacturer.

I love these knives (this is my third). And the peeler is pretty incredible; this is the second one I've bought and couldn't be happier with the quality and sharpness. It only allows you to peel away from you, so it's a little tricky for apples but for straight veggies it's excellent.

Kuhn Rikon Small 10-1/2-Inch Wedge Serving Knife

Kuhn Rikon Small 10-1/2-Inch Wedge Serving Knife, PurpleThis seemed gimmicky, but I was game to try it with the holiday season coming up and many pies to serve. Over time I've collected a number of pie and cake servers, but none really do as well as I'd like. The advantages of this server caught my attention so I decided to give it a try and I'm quite pleased with it.

The serrated blade does a good job in cutting a slice. While you may not need that sharp blade for a pumpkin pie, I found it's really a help for apple pie and vegetable quiche both of which can have firmer textured pieces that need to be bisected when cutting a slice. Because the blade part is offset, I found I can lower the entire blade into the pie plate to effectively cut the slice cleanly when needed. The blade itself is 5 1/4" long and works even with the large pie plates I use. The drop from the lowest part of the handle to bottom of the blade when in the cutting position is 2" and the wide part of the blade itself is 2 1/2". That does a good job of accommodating my thick apple pie. The blade offset when you hold the server flat to lift the cut slice from the pie plate is 1" from handle to blade so it gets into my pie plates effectively. The blade is somewhat flexible so I can get it down under the slice with minimum disruption to the bottom crust.

The handle is comfortable to hold and because the blade is sharp, it's nice to have the blade guard for storage. Although I haven't used this server on cake, I don't know why it wouldn't be good for that too. With the sharp blade you wouldn't have to saw and disrupt the frosting, just cut straight down to the cake plate.

I'm left-handed so I'm using the server backwards from how most people would, but it still works fine. I like having both the cutting and serving activities married into one tool (less to wash and take to gatherings). I'm pleased with this server and would rebuy.

OXO SteeL 4-Piece Cheese Knife Set

OXO SteeL 4-Piece Cheese Knife SetOkay, no one NEEDS a set of four cheese knives, but if you want some that are more about function than appearance, this is the set for you. Don't get me wrong, they don't look awful or anything, but they're black rubber and stainless steel for functional use. There are also very elegant polished stainless cheese knives out there, but those are much more decorative items. So, if you're actually going to use the cheese knives, these are good ones. The handles are comfortable with a good grip, and the blades are moderately sharp out of the box. Decent price too for the set.

I love OXO products. They are durable and ergonomic. This cheese knife set did not disappoint. The packaging explains which knife is for which kind of cheese, although it is easy to figure out after you throw out the box. When you bring this set out, people will know that you are serious about cheese!
