Ulu Knife and Chopping Bowl with Salad Claws

Ulu Knife and Chopping Bowl with Salad ClawsI am considering whether to return this knife or not...

Number one, the first thing I noticed right out of the box, it says "Designed by Alaskans. Made in China." Why would I want to buy something called an ALASKAN ULU KNIFE SET, that is SHIPPED FROM ALASKA, but MADE IN CHINA!?!?! It's on the higher end in price to other ulu knives on Amazon, but made in China. I think I may see if it is legal to even call it an Alaskan Ulu knife if it isn't made by Alaskans, as dictated in the Indian Arts and Crafts Act. Just like it's illegal to call something Native American when it's made in Mexico (or any other country for that matter). As a Native American family, we know these things. I know people on the Indian Arts & Crafts Board and they deal with claims like these all the time where someone tries to sell something and misrepresents what it is.

Secondly, the handle is not that great. It's a very light wood, nothing hard that you would expect out of a knife handle. Also, the edges are not sanded or rounded. It's like they cut out the shape on a band saw, engraved the side, and then stuck the blade in. Not sure how long it will last or how comfortable it would be to use extensively.

I haven't used the knife yet, but the blade seems pretty darn sharp. But I am not going to use it until I find out if it's legal to sell in the US.

UPDATE: I returned this knife when seller approved it. Then seller returned the knife 4 days after he received it, saying it was damaged. I used the same packaging that the seller sent the item to me in and used the same carrier and delivery method. Hard to believe that such an item was damaged and was, according to him, "cannot resell this item as returned". Must say something about the quality of the product if it can't even stand up to bubble wrap and cardboard.

I have a screen shot of the item page where it says "PROUDLY MADE IN ALASKA" in all caps. Yet the back of the item package says "Made In China" and the seller, when advising me that he was refusing the return, said, "First of all it clearly states on the detail page that this is an import item." How ludicrous is that that he doesn't even know what his own item descriptions say?

I found a REAL ALASKAN ULU knife on another site (none to be found on Amazon) for more money and made with hand-carved caribou antler. I bought this product in the first place because it was the most expensive ulu on Amazon.

This seller is dirty and money-grubbing. Avoid buying anything unless you like cheap goods at high prices with bad customer service. Filed and A-to-Z Claim for this experience. Let's see if Amazon condones or supports this type of selling behavior....

Returns are a part of retail, fella! Grow up.

Be very careful looking at the company name for this product.

The knives made in Alaska are made by "The Ulu FACTORY" -this knife's maker is "The Ulu COMPANY". That could be construed as being misleading.

If it doesn't have a symbol on the box of a polar bear and cub, with "Made in Alaska" on it, it is probably "imported".

I can't speak to the quality of all Chinese companies because some of them make very good quality products, but look very carefully at the advertisement and the packaging to be SURE it is made in Alaska -if that is important to your purchase.

Madesmart 2 by 15.4 by 6-1/2-Inch Spice Drawer Organizer

Madesmart 2 by 15.4 by 6-1/2-Inch Spice Drawer OrganizerMy cabinet drawers are: 3 & 5/8" deep. Based on those dimensions:

These spice drawer organizers fit:

[3] 4 & 1/4" up to 4 & 5/8" spice bottles in each row [total of 9 bottles/per organizer]

or [6] 2 & 1/8" spice bottles, stacking 2 in each row [total of 18 bottles per organizer]

This product helped me reconfigure and organize my kitchen cabinets. I put the plastic storage containers which are lightweight up in my overhead cabinets [in a cardboard box that easily pulls out] and made room for a spice drawer. Although my husband doesn't understand it, it works for me! I can see all my spices with one open drawer instead of spinning various lazy susans and trying to shuffle through bottles to find ones that have slipped to the middle.

Nice quality, easy to clean.

I got this rack to organize my spices, but once I loaded it up with my (standard, 4" high) spice jars, I found that it's too tall for my drawers. They have 3.25" of clearance, and the rack with jars in it is 3.75" tall. Other than that issue, it seems well made and easy to clean.

so glad i found this organizer! I don't like to have things on the counter, but installing a special spice drawer was out of the question. now i can have both. the organizer fits in half of my drawer, and i keep my spoons etc in the other half so i have everything i need to cook right there. it's very handy and i like that it keeps clutter out of sight. i would recommend that you check dimensions carefully and make sure you check the height of your spice bottle so that your drawer will close.

I bought 2 of these initially and placed them side by side in my kitchen drawer. Loved them so much , I bought another pair that stacks right on top of the two. Definitely require ample and DEEP drawers which is what I have.

Very useful and quality is excellent.

This was very useful, but you do have to have deep enough drawers to use this product, luckily I researched and made sure I had the space.

I expected French manufacture knives in the tradition of great knife makers that I understood this brand to be. So, a bit surprised at where they were manufactured; although the quality is ok. Will see how they perform over time. Presentation box is flimsy.

J.K. Adams 19-Inch-by-13-Inch Hickory Wood Heritage Homestead Cutting Board

J.K. Adams 19-Inch-by-13-Inch Hickory Wood Heritage Homestead Cutting BoardI purchased this cutting board as an Amazon "scratch and dent" model that was missing its original packaging. The item arrived packed in the normal Amazon shipping box and was surrounded by plastic. The board itself is beautiful and I have been using it for the past several weeks. It has not warped or cracked or had any other issues. I have been coating it with mineral oil on a weekly (more or less) basis. I suspect this board will last for many years.

Proteak End Grain Rectangular Cutting Board

Proteak End Grain Rectangular Cutting Boardit cracked after one month. Big crack. Very disappointed. I have now had two only one forom amzaon but this is insane. Bad product. Wish i could get my money back

I've been using plastic cutting boards for years, so I could just throw them into the dishwasher. What a difference, though, to cut on an endgrain wooden cutting board. I'm not sure if it would be the same with a non-endgrain wooden one, which would be considerably less expensive, but this feels so much more secure than my plastic cutting boards ever did. Who knew? The wood seems to hold my onion half, cut-side down, more securely than plastic, and it is gentle on my expensive knives. Really makes for more secure and accurate cutting. I went back and forth, trying to decide on mineral oil or coconut oil, then would up going with a mineral oil based butcher block oil I already had.

I will probably keep the plastic channeled cutting board I have for chicken and meats for now, anyway. But the veggies will definitely come here.

I do not regret buying this at all. Just wish it weren't so expensive.

I researched the web to determine the best material for a chopping board. As a result I bought this one and have no regrets. I highly recommend. This material makes my knives seem brand new since it does not dull your knives like other material.

I've had this cutting board for several months and it still looks new. Cuts on the board heal up nicely and don't trap any food. Of course, it has to be oiled about once per month for maintenance, but that's true for any wood board. It's a bit heavy, which is to be expected from a 2-inch thick board, but it's probably not necessary for this size board. It could be maybe an inch thick and still not warp, which would reduce the weight and make it less problematic to handle. All in all, it's an endgrain cutting board that matches its specs as listed on Amazon. Good quality and a decent price. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably get one a little larger and maybe not quite as thick.

Victorinox Fibrox 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife

Victorinox Swiss Army 7-Inch Fibrox Granton Edge Santoku KnifeForschner is by far the best knife for the money. They always arrive razor sharp, and have the ability to hold an edge far longer than much more expensive knives. I purchased one for all of my line cooks as they are very durable and can be used to perform almost any task in a professional kitchen.

The "sports mom" comment that it "felt cheap" was probably due to its light weight and composite plastic handle. To an untrained eye, it could be confused for a "cheap" knife, but after de-boning a chicken, slicing through a butternut squash, it still glides through tomatoes like butter and can perform the most surgical of cuts. The composite plastic handle has an amazing grip even when your hands are covered in duck fat, it won't slip.

I own knives that can run up into the $1200 range, but still prefer this little powerhouse for everyday use. If you only own one sharp knife in your entire kitchen, this should be the one. I also have the 10 inch forschner chefs knife, but prefer the graton edge on this one, especially while slicing potatoes.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)The R H. Forschner by Victorinox 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife gets almost as much use in my kitchen as the R.H. Forschner by Victorinox 8-Inch Chef's Knife. They both have the black Fibrox handle, which is very comfortable in the hand. They also each have a nice balance to the blade for extended use. The Santoku knife is a little shorter, making it slightly more agile for deboning or butchering. But the slightly greater heft of the chef's knife make it a tad better on larger jobs.

The ridges on the side of the Santoku knife relieve pressure when slicing and dicing. The edge seems to be less aggressive than the chef's knife, but the difference is rather subtle. Both are excellent, but the chef's knife just seems to holds its edge for a slightly longer time. Either of these could be your primary knife, and both are a worthy addition to your kitchen. These two particular models are my personal favorites and make up half of the four knives I use most when preparing meals.

Other than those two knives, I mainly only use a filet knife and a paring knife when cooking. The R H. Forschner by Victorinox 3-1/4-Inch Paring Knife is very highly rated, though I use a different older knife that I had before purchasing these other knives.

For those who prepare a smaller amount of fish than I do, the filet knife's role can really be filled by the Santoku knife. When preparing certain fruits and vegetables, I know the Santoku knife needs sharpening when it does not effectively break the skin unless you start from the point. While I sometimes will use my smaller paring knife for prepping such items, this is a good way to know when it's time to sharpen your knives.

The Forschner line-up of knives are impressive, and give you a lot of knife for a reasonable cost. I purchased too many budget knife sets that ended up collecting dust. I have come to rely on my four favorite knives and find that they do 99% of everything I need in the kitchen.

Definitely consider this knife in combination with others, instead of a knife and block set. A few carefully selected knives are better than a set of average knives any day. Though if I were to purchase a block set, you can get a decent compliment of Forschner knives in the R.H. Forschner by Victorinox 8-Piece Knife Block Set. I don't own that set yet, but I'm just putting that info here for anybody determined to get a knife block set that plans on buying one or more Forschner knives anyway. Perhaps for those that don't have a sharpening steel or chef's knife, it may be worth the investment.

If I had to choose between the 8 inch chef's knife or the 7 inch Santoku, I would take the chef's knife. But for the person who likes to cook often, you will find that both of these knives get plenty of use in your kitchen.

For those that want to gain the 3 most commonly sought knifes, the R.H. Forschner by Victorinox 3-Piece Fibrox Chef's Set is probably ideal for many. For me, I prefer the 8 inch chef's knife to the 10 inch, and I like the Santoku knife over the more slender slicing knife. Either way you go, you really can't go wrong with these.

Enjoy.

Buy Victorinox Fibrox 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife Now

The Victorinox Fibrox line of knives are all composed of the same high grade metal and well built handles. Cooks Illustrated did indeed rate these knives. However, this santoku was not one of them I believe. The article I read was of the chef's knife.

I have tried many different santoku knives but this one feels the most at home. For me the handle is a little small but it's light. Deceptively light. You wouldn't believe how easily it can go through anything you put it against.

The Granton edge does indeed help with food coming off of the knife. Unless you are chopping something that REALLY sticks to the knife, like I do many times.

Even though I prefer the chef's knife version of this line, the santoku is probably the best one I've ever used. You won't be sorry that you bought this blade. And if you are... it only cost you around $30. Sure, it's no Ken Onion, but then again, it's not over $180 either. For the price, you just can't beat it.

I did a lot of research before purchasing this Santoku. I am into cooking. I was prepared to buy one of the two hundred dollar plus hand forged Japanese Santoku's available from one of my specialty catalogs when I read in Cook's Illustrated that in their tests the Forschner Chef Knife had beaten out some of the most expensive chef knives available and had become a favorite of chefs in their test kitchen. I figured the construction and quality of the Forschner Santoku and the Forschner Chef Knife would be equivalent. I bought it from Amazon and have used it on numerous occasions and I love it. Well balanced, sturdy, yet light weight, it is incredibly sharp right out of the package and easy to maintain. The handle is very comfortable and grips well even when wet. What more could you ask for from a knife under $30?

Want Victorinox Fibrox 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife Discount?

By far the best Santoku knife that you can buy for the money. I purchased this for $20 +ship and would spend $30 +ship if I had to. Don't waste your money or overpriced Henckels or Wusthof, you will get what you need right here with the R.H. Forschner.

PROS:

1. Ergonomic and slip resistant handle. No concern at all of it slipping out of your hand.

2. Razor-sharp edge. Watch out, the blade on this knife is unbelievably sharp. Slicing through raw potatoes for steak fries was like cutting through butter.

3. Easy to clean. No cracks or crevices for food to build up.

4. Lightweight and well-balanced. This is not a heavy knife. When in use it feel like an extension of your arm. Not a dumbbell. I see the lightness as a positive.

CONS:

n/a

If you do not already have, I recommend purchasing a Blade Saver (holster) for this knife. (1) Because you don't want to dent or damage the blade wherever you place it and (2) So that you don't cut yourself when locating it in your drawer. This is what I recommend: "The Ultimate Edge BS4 4-Piece Knife Blade Saver Set"

UPDATE 06DEC2008:

I have been using this knife quite often chopping vegetables and slicing meat. It has worked flawlessly, however, I recommend that you invest in a good sharpening knife as the knife seems to dull quite fast. I believe this is in part due to the fact that santoku knife blades are more narrowly cut. While it allows for a razor sharp edge, the edge dulls much faster. May I suggest the Wusthof Asian Edge Sharpener as this specifically sharpens santoku blades Wüsthof Asian Edge Sharpener, Red.

Chicago Cutlery Belden 15-Piece Block Knife Set

Chicago Cutlery Belden 15-Piece Block Knife SetNeeded to replace my old knives, which were Oster knives. Hesitated for a while after reading some reviews. Received the knives and started using them the first day. The knives are sharp and easy to handle. The only knife that I really don't care for is the serrated utility knife (5"), I am hoping to find a none serrated knife to match the set. I don't care for serrated because you cannot sharpen them and they are awkward for me to use. Others may have no problem with the serrated knife. The remaining knives are fabulous and the steak knives actually cut not tear. The knives feel solid in your hand to include the steak knives. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in this set.

Easy-Grip Cook's Knife With Plastic Handle - 12"

Easy-Grip Cook's Knife With Plastic Handle - 12'This is a true commercial grade knife. No fancy box or handle, its meant for one thing, working that's it. It took a few minutes of honing to get it razor sharp, but it took an edge rather easily. Balance is decent with heft towards the front which is to be expected with a knife this size. I have a 10" chefs knive and didn't want to spend a fortune on a 12" since it won't be used too often in a home kitchen and this fits the bill pefectly. I'm very pleased and highly recommend it!

NORPRO "My Favorite Knife" Teflon Safe & Heat Resistant

NORPRO 'My Favorite Knife' Teflon Safe & Heat ResistantThe NORPRO "MY FAVORITE KNIFE" does not scratch nonstick bakeware, even if you use extra pressure in drawing it across the bakeware surface. However, because the short, oddly-shaped blade lacks a serrated edge, this knife doesn't cut cornbread or brownies nearly as easily as the elegant 12" Zyliss Dessert Knife (nonstick surface-safe), or the stubby 8" Bakeware Buddy Non-Stick Surface-Safe Plastic Knife.

From handle tip to blade tip, the Norpro "My Favorite Knife" is 9 inches long; the knife is balanced and the handle is comfortable to hold. My knife is green, and matches the green shown in the product page photo. As an add-on item priced at about $3, this is a pretty good deal. But because of the smooth-edged blade, I rate this Teflon-safe knife at just 3 stars ("It's okay" on the official Amazon scale).

If you are cutting soft butter in a non-stick pan, then this will suit you fine. If you want to cut brownies or lasagna or anything of substance, think again. A TOTAL WASTE!

What is this thing for? It's duller than a piece of plastic silverware, oddly shaped, and I believe they sent me the ugliest color they had... it's a kind of dull, dirty yellow. I guess it would be OK if you had a three-year-old who wanted to "help"" in the kitchen, or chop her play-doh into shapes... it's badly molded, too; there's a sharp ridge (mold mark) on the underside of the handle, which makes it uncomfortable to grip. All in all, a waste of good money.

Messermeister San Moritz Elite 8-Inch Carving KnifeMessermesister is one of the "hidden" knife makers. They produce knives much in a similar vein to Henkle, and Wusthoff (sp?). However, they are less expensive and not only that, they are IMHO better. Henkle et al. while good knifes have changed their forging processes in order to keep up with their relatively new popularity. Messermeister since they haven't gone to such a mass volume manufacturing model is able to keep with their original forging methods keeping the high quality that the others have lost.

Shun Pro 6-1/2-Inch Nakiri Knife

Shun Pro 6-1/2-Inch Nakiri KnifeI have several Shun Pro knives, and they are probably my favorites out of my (ridiculously large) collection of kitchen cutlery. This particular knife is one of the most useful of all. However, knives of this design are probably not the best choice for the "average" cook.

First, recognize that this is a single-bevel knife of Japanese design. Moreover, the "flat" side is actually slightly concave. This design has advantages and disadvantages. First the advantages. It takes a very sharp edge, and the excellent, relatively hard steel holds this edge very well. The concave "back" allows the knife to pass through foods much more easily than a conventional knife.

Now the disadvantages. the single bevel causes the knife to "move" toward the flat side when you are making a cut. With a little practice, you can compensate for this and produce perfect, paper-thin slices -but it does take a bit of practice. A second disadvantage is that you should not sharpen knives of this type with typical sharpeners. The beveled side should be sharpened to 17-20 degrees, and the flat side should be finished at near 0 degrees. Unless you are experienced and equipped properly, you should have this type of knife professionally sharpened. It should not be run through an electric sharpener -even the Chef's Choice, which works OK for conventional knives.

The blade has fairly little "rocker." It is best used for slicing and chopping (as opposed to the type of rocking action you can use with a typical chef's knife).

This is an absolutely wonderful piece of cutlery if you are prepared to (1) learn the characteristics of a single-bevel knife; (2) sharpen it properly.

The KAI Shun Pro Nakiri knife is really an excellent kitchen product for traditionally styled Japanese chefs and average cooks alike. This knife, like all of the Shun knives, is extremely sharp; Shun knives are at least as sharp as Global knives, albeit with much more comfortable handles. This is as good as it gets when it comes to chopping up large vegetables, but will also work for mincing onions or dicing garlic cloves. Although it looks somewhat like a meat cleaver, it really is not intended to be used as such; if you are looking for a knife that will cut both meat and vegetables, the Shun Classic santoku knife may be more your thing. Also, please note that the blade on a nakiri knife is one-sided, and may be awkward for some tasks. If you want a great knife for splitting large vegetables such as pumpkins or squash, however, than this is your knife.

Buy Shun Pro 6-1/2-Inch Nakiri Knife Now

This knife is incredibly sharp right out of the box. I had some trepidation about using it, because I'm left-handed (they've since come out with a left-handed version, but it didn't exist when I got mine a year and a half ago), but I haven't had a problem. I use it for vegetables, fruit, and herbs, and occasionally for non-bony meat, and it's an excellent slicer. Although it looks like a cleaver, it should not be used like one; it'd be a shame to wreck such a beautiful knife.. The knife is beautifully finished and fits my medium-sized hand perfectly. This is the first Shun knife I've had, but it will not be the last. It's pricey, but well worth it.

Gibson Sunbeam Fairland 16-Piece Flatware Set, Green, Service for 4

Gibson Sunbeam Fairland 16-Piece Flatware Set, Green, Service for 4Very attractive set, unfortunately the metal end pieces fell off of some of the spoons after only a couple of weeks of use making those pieces useless. There was no customer service phone number or website information on the packaging.

I bought a set of the green and orange. Fortunately they go perfectly with my plates. Sadly, they are very poor quality. The handles already have slight cracks at the base of the handles. There is also a product carving in the silverware that gives an awkward sensation when used. The carvings are on the bottom of the spoons and on the knives. The spoons are the problem. It's deep enough in the metal that you can feel it on your tongue. Would not buy these again. I'm currently looking for replacements but haven't found any I like yet.

I had hoped the darker shade on the left would be how this flatware looked, but it's definitely the shade on the right -neon lime green. At first I thought I would keep the set despite some misgivings, but ultimately I returned it for two reasons, one stronger than the other: First, the color was just enough off from the shade of my dishes to be less than satisfactory, but secondly and more important, the manufacturer stamped company information into the metal part of the pieces and I found this especially unwanted on the bowls of the spoons. The incised words are on the bottom of the spoon bowls (three lines of text) where they ruined (for me) the feel of the spoon. It adds a definite texture to the metal which I found unpleasant.

The set is quite heavy with the handles being considerably chunky -yet the balance is pretty good so the bulk wasn't a problem.

Victorinox 14-Piece Gourmet Cutlery Set, Fibrox Handles with Attache CaseBought it for a gift. Recipients were very pleased. I would purchase it for my self if I needed it.

This is certainly not the nicest set of knives ever made, but they are very nice and the price is great. They're sharp, very thin, and the handles are great. This set is a useful assortment; there's not much fluff. The only things I don't really use are the big chef's knife (it's really big), the lemon zester, and the melon baller. They're good tools; I just don't zest lemons or ball melons very often. Highly recommended, especially as a first set of "nice" knives.

I just purchased this set a few weeks ago and love it. It does feature some knives that I dont normally use, but compared to the 8 knife set, you get so much more for only $20! Just today I was slicing some older refridgerated tomatoes. I was suprised at how thin i was able to slice them! The look of the knife is pretty generic, but I love how they slice!

Rada Cutlery S13 2-piece Carving Gift Set

Rada Cutlery S13 2-piece Carving Gift SetMy personal care attendants, who do my cooking are very pleased with howcomfortable they fit in the hand and how light weight they are. Most good carving sets are very heavy.

Let's see if this is satisfactory to Amazon.com. This product looks cheap, the fork is tiny, the finishing is cheap, the material is too light. I don't think it could handle real carving. It was returned and I don't think I will purchase another item from Rada again!
