Mercer Cutlery Genesis 7-Piece Forged Steak Knife Set, Steel/Black
In my quest to upgrade all of my kitchen-ware and knives, I bought these to match my other Mercer cutlery. I've been very happy with the quality of the Mercer knives and I like the "rubberized" handle because it is thicker, offers better control when wet and still looks like very high quality.
You can't tell from the pictures, but these steak knives have the same thick rubberized handle, very comfortable. From the tip to about 1/3 of the way down these knives are serrated, very slightly though, not very deep. I haven't prepared a good steak yet to test these out, but on fruits and veggies that I've cut, these are great. These knives are very sharp and heavy enough that I would never imagine these getting bent from a little misuse, which should never happen now that we have nice cutlery.
I will update after I get to truly use these as they were intended. The knives were shipped quickly, arrived when expected and were exactly what I was hoping for. You might not be able to tell, but the tips of the knives are serrated. I almost wish they weren't because the un-serrated section cuts like a dream.

These really are quality knives. They are extremely sharp, almost scary sharp but they make quick work out of anything. I would highly recommend these knives if anyone inquired.Winco Heavy Duty Cleaver with Wooden Handle
I'll keep using it, and sharpening it, and using it, and sharpening it, since there is plenty of steel there, and we don't need it but 3-4 times a year. If you just need it for specialized jobs, like I do, it's fine. If you're looking for a stout knife for daily abuse, this isn't it.(December 1, 2011: I just recently added a photo to the Amazon description page.)
This product -Heavy Duty Meat Cleaver 8" Blade -is labeled as model "KC-301" below the name "Winco." A sticker says it's made in China.
There are pluses and minuses to this meat cleaver.
On the plus side, when new the blade is deadly sharp. It literally cuts paper in a stroke. It has no trouble slicing into a tomato. That won't last long, of course, after several minutes of whacking into Beaver pelts and June bugs and Wallaby carcasses and then afterWard often whamping into the presumably hard surface beneath. But it is unreasonable to expect any blade to stand up to such a beating and stay sharp enough to slice a tomato. When it gets too dull you can sharpen it, which means regrinding, and until then you can hone it every so often, which means using a butcher's steel to realign the very edge of the edge.
Here, in case you believe it, is what the Wikipedia article says: "A knife-sharp edge on a [meat] cleaver is undesirable because it would quickly become more blunt than it if were less sharp but sturdier to begin with. The grind of Eastern Asian kitchen knives is 15-18 degrees, and for most Western kitchen knives it is 20-22°. But for a meat cleaver it is even blunter, more like 25°."
Also on the plus side, this meat cleaver weighs 15-7/8 ounces, which I'd pretty much call one pound, which is heavy, which is just what I wanted for hacking through bones. Also also, if you don't own a meat tenderizer you can flip this cleaver over and beat your meat with the totally blunt far upper corner (which you can do with any other cleaver for that matter).
That said, this is by no means a high-quality meat cleaver.
One defect, at least on my exact one, is that at least two of the three rivets are a bit loose. When you hold it by the handle in the usual way and waggle it, you can feel the tang of the blade swing back and forth a tiny bit inside the two grips.
Which leads to my second complaint, which is that there's room between the grips and the tang for food and bacteria and molds and viruses and other ick to slip into and propagate and later end up in your turkey stock or your acorn squash ice cream. (This would be true even if the rivets weren't loose.) Any such crud that gets in there is going to be impossible to scrub away. The only solution (ha) I've thought of is to swoosh the handle around vigorously in a solution of vinegar and water, or maybe even bleach and water, and then pray (ha ha).
There's a total of about 22 inches of linear space where such crud can get into (and, more importantly, out of) the grip. This is simply a design defect, unless it's a gross manufacturing defect. Either way, for this I subtract 1 star.
My third complaint is about the grind. You would expect the top of the grind line of a high-quality cleaver to exactly parallel the sharp edge, but it doesn't. And in two places you can see where there's a third grind line, which is indisputably a mistake. Either this was sharpened on a machine that was adjusted wrong or, much more likely, it was sharpened by a human that was careless.
Because of the cross-contamination problem I rate this product at 4 stars. If it cost $30 or more I'd rate it at 2 stars, but it's only 15 bucks.
So you can buy two.
P.S. Did anyone get the Beaver, June bug, Wallaby, afterWard joke?

This cleaver is of best quality. The construction is solid and heavy. The blade is 8 inches long and sharp....so sharp that when I unpacked it I cut my finger open before I knew it but my clumsiness is too blame for that. Dont pay 100 dollars for the "namebrands" when you can get this great cleaver for less than 20 dollars(including shipping).Read Best Reviews of Winco Heavy Duty Cleaver with Wooden Handle Here
This cleaver is a great balance between heft and value. It goes about its business, in your hand, with clinical precision and power to spare. Cuts are very clean, and the nicely balanced blade makes short work of any bone which might challenge a lesser cleaver. I could barely contain my glee as my prep time was literally 'cut' in half, and in so doing, made a mundane task almost enjoyable. I would recommend this product to any chef worth his/her salt...the price is an added bonus.I bought this for cracking coconuts...It does an AWESOME job! Most of all saves the wear on my "Good" knives :) Sturdy handle, sharp blade. The description is what it is.Gibson Mr Coffee Harpwell 1.8 ? Liter 2 Qt Whistling Tea Kettle
I have read lots and lots of reviews on other kettles (as well as this one). I couldn't believe all the complaints on some of the other kettles. This one seemed to be just right for me and it is! It is also a beautiful kettle with a nice modern look, and I love mine. Thanks again, Amazon 5+ stars for you and the kettle.

this is just what i was looking for i had been looking for a whisteling tea pot for sooo long and i read a ton of reviews before i buy anything. and this item did not really have all that many good reviews but i thought i would take a chance with it so i did and i'm glad i did. it whistle so loud with time first you will seem steam coming out of the whistle tip but then after about 10 min after that the whistle will slowly get louder. so don't worry the whistle does get very loud. but works great and always love the "me coffee" brand.Read Best Reviews of Gibson Mr Coffee Harpwell 1.8 ? The tea kettle is ok. I love the shape and look. It is very large, larger than I need. I love the the trigger to open the spout. You click it and it pops open and stays open until you shut it. The thing I find disappointing about it is that the handle gets very hot. I find I have to us a pot holder when pouring which is very disappointing. Because of the hot handle I would not buy again, and will probably keep an eye out for a replacement.Want Gibson Mr Coffee Harpwell 1.8 ? Liter 2 Qt Whistling Tea Kettle Discount?
I shopped long and hard for the perfect tea kettle. This one is great. It not only is affordably priced, but also has my must-have features. This kettle has a loud enough whistle, is not too big, is attractive, has a very substantial stay cool handle, has an easy to reach spout opener button which avoids steam burns, and it heats the water quickly to a full boil. I highly recommend this kettle.Wusthof Gourmet 14-Piece Knife Block Set

I bought three different knives by Zyliss, but this the most practical of all and would be the best option if you intend on buying just one knife.Great knife! Very sharp and has excellent balance, unlike some knives that are cumbersome. I like the feel of it. I bought it to carry in a cooler while traveling. This is a very nice knife. I used it to fix breakfast and it did all smoothly. It is sharp and the excellent sheath should help keep it that way.

I wanted a knife with a non-porous handle for occasional use cutting up melons in season. I don't have use for a knife of this size for other reasons so I did not want to spend a lot of money. I do not think this knife will stand up to a tough watermelon. The knife blade is too thin for the length. The knife is not sharp. It won't slice a carrot. It splits it instead. The handle is too small for the length of the blade. I don't feel comfortable (safe) using it. I have another Chicago Cutlery knife that I like a lot and that has served me for many years. It is still sharper than the new knife.

Let me also say I've tried other products, such as Dexter-Russell, and Global. Neither come close.
Out of box this knife is unbelievable, great edge, and aggressive appearance. One of the first things I did was de-bone some short ribs, which resulted with the cleanest bones I've ever had to throw away. The other remarkable feature I noticed is how clean cuts really were. The knife left so must more moisture still in the meat, then I've ever seen.
All together this is the best product out there that I can find. A must have for any professional. The product arrived in Singapore within about two weeks, much earlier than I expected. I am not a professional chief but I do cook a lot. I was so excited when I got it in my hand. The design is nice and so balanced while holding it. Besides this kinfe is super sharp so it makes so easy to debone chicken or fish. Now I understand what it means "Let the knife do the work!"
Wenger Grand Maitre 4-Piece Cook's Set with Swiss Army Knife
They are also a very good deal. They are nearly identical to the top rated R.H. Forschner/Victorinox knives, but the Wengers are much harder to find in the U.S. and only sell in sets.
In Europe, these same knives, with bright yellow handles are the top sellers to professional chefs under Wenger's SWIBO brand.
The 3 piece Wenger Grand Maitre and 3 Piece Forschner/Fibrox sets sell for $55-$60 on Amazon, so this 4 piece set with Swiss Army throw in is a deal.
On the down side while they are tough, they are very light weight/not full tang/stamped not forged. These attributes will effect aesthetics, not use, safety, or reliability. They are not nearly as pretty as my Wusthof knives, and the free SA knife is a small but handy pocket type. The box they come in is not fancy.
Note that the bread and utility knife are both serrated, the paring and chef are smooth blades.
At well under $8 per knife, a full five stars.Got the set when they were on sale. I was amazed by the quality and sharpness of the knives when they arrived. As a matter of fact, the bandage on my finger testifies it.
Other than the bread knife, I have used the other three. The paring knife was good for peeling apples, a bit too sharp though. The utility knife was good for cutting oranges, although I would like it to be harder and thicker. The chef's knife was perfect for cutting vegetables and meat, and was super sharp, sharper than any knife I have used, so be careful when handling it.
Overall, super value for the price.
One more thing to add:
Be careful with the knife, I am looking at two new cuts on my finger when I am typing. They are much bigger/deeper than if I used my other, dull, knife. I will keep using the knife, but only when necessary.

These are great American-made quality steak knives. Sharp, cut cleanly and well, and look good. After reading about our trade deficit, unemployment problems, tax issues, and all of that, I am really happy to find a great American product to buy and recommend. Why buy foreign, imported knives? These knives are relatively light in weight, fit well in the hand, and cut through steaks the way they should. Fantastic. No reason at all to look to an import.I read a lot of reviews and did my research before I bought this.I should say the USA quality is something else. these will last a lifetime.
too bad we can't afford to make most of our products in USA.I had a difficult time finding a steak knife without a serated edge. This knife is very durable and extremely sharp.
I also feel the price was reasonable. I would recommend to everyone. Very good quality.
Corn Cob Cutter
They tell you that you should "twist" around the cob in order to cut. The first time I tried it that is what I attempted. It was a frustrating mess. It occurred to me then that creating some sort of "nail through wood" device (to hold the cob still) would be necessary.
I didn't use the thing for a long time afterwards because I hadn't gotten around to making the device. When I finally used it again I decided to skip the recommended "twisting" and simply push straight down. It worked like magic. The only issue is that the kernels tend go all over the place. This first time I used this it mangled the corn and made a mess. That was the first ear, on the second ear of corn it broke, one of the metal "teeth" came off. It actually worked a little better but still made a mess. I would not replace it with the same device. This is hard to use. Trying to push down while keeping the corn upright is difficult. It is very flimsy. I would have sent it back, but it was only $7. Don't order this. I also ordered a corn cutter by Oxo. It is excellent. There is a video about it on Amazon.
