They tell you that you should "twist" around the cob in order to cut. The first time I tried it that is what I attempted. It was a frustrating mess. It occurred to me then that creating some sort of "nail through wood" device (to hold the cob still) would be necessary.
I didn't use the thing for a long time afterwards because I hadn't gotten around to making the device. When I finally used it again I decided to skip the recommended "twisting" and simply push straight down. It worked like magic. The only issue is that the kernels tend go all over the place. This first time I used this it mangled the corn and made a mess. That was the first ear, on the second ear of corn it broke, one of the metal "teeth" came off. It actually worked a little better but still made a mess. I would not replace it with the same device. This is hard to use. Trying to push down while keeping the corn upright is difficult. It is very flimsy. I would have sent it back, but it was only $7. Don't order this. I also ordered a corn cutter by Oxo. It is excellent. There is a video about it on Amazon.
