HENCKELS Twin 14-Slot hard wood Knife Storage Block

I received this as a gift after setting out guidelines, and this is exactly the correct block for someone who likes to pick and choose individual knives from different manufacturers for their set. There are a few reasons I really like it though, and it's unique among the blocks available through several sources (and I've looked!).

1) It has slots for three chef's knives. This means I can have a Santoku, a French/German knife and another broad specialty knife all in the same small block or even a second size of a chef's knife.

2) It will hold up to a 10" long knife, which is longer than most people will need for their kitchen knives (carver aside, but that's usually stored with the matching carving fork) in the top three slots, and the lower ones will hold up to a 9" long knife.

3) Steak knives nearly always come in sets of four, not six like most blocks seem to hold (this is like buying 10 hot dogs and 8 buns, it's very, very annoying), and this has four slots. If you need more, there are larger blocks that hold eight knives, but this is a smaller block.

4) The steak knife slots are vertical. This may not seem like a big issue, but many steak knives have an angle between the handle and the blade (to allow you to cut on a lipped plate) that make them difficult to use in a horizontal slot.

5) If you already have small starter set a set with a sharpening steel and this is just secondary storage for additional knives your first set didn't include, the slot for the steel can be used for up to a 10.5" slicing or carving knife.

I've become the proud owner of three new Victorinox knives and wanted to finally get my knives out of my tiny drawer. Had ordered a universal block and then found this wood block online and joined Amazon Prime to get it here right away to compare. The decision to return the universal block came easy. The picture doesn't really give a very good feel for the actual size of this. The block measures 4 inches wide by 10 inches in length. It has three slots wide enough to hold larger chef's knives or a santoku knife. With this block I can mix and match my old knives with the new ones and can even add on if I so desire.

This knife block makes a tiny footprint in my rather small kitchen and its slender width makes it really compact. It passes the eye test and provides an outstanding functional storage option for people with a basic set of knives or a mix and match set like I have. The 14 slots including slots for your scissors and steak knives will accomodate many people's needs and you can't beat the price. I consider this one of the best purchases I've made in my kitchen re-organization.

We have a varied assortment and widths of quality kitchen knives. We chose this block because it contains different widths slots. Several of our knives' blades are 2 inches wide at the hilt and they slde easily into this block. However, I did modify one of the slots to accomodate a knife that is wider than 2 inches. But, we are glad that we purchased this block!!

This knife block is a great buy. It has two wide slots that will accomodate santoku knives with ease. The block is not huge but plenty big to hold several knives, steak knives, kitchen scissors...a very, very nice block at a great price.
