King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit Waterstone

King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit WaterstoneI would have given 5 stars if there had of been a small bottle that came with the kit that could be used to hold water for the stones. It holds up well IF you know how to use and care for it. Sharpening with a stone ( actually a series of stones ) is not natural. To use one you should readup on a couple of internet articles on knife sharpening. I use a low grit, say 600-800 to get the shape and bevel right and bring the edge down to a rough sharp. This is fine for an axe, but, not a knife. After the bevel and most of the dull edge has been ground down ( no light reflects off the cutting edge ) move to the 1000 grit stone. At 1000 grit you will remove a lot less material , but all you are after is to get the scratches off the bevels and refine the edge a little more. When the edge is sharp enough to cut notebook paper without snags it is time for the 6000 grit stone. WARNING, the 6000 grit stone is soft and you can gouge it out in a single stroke. Keep it wet so the metal shavings float on the surface instead of being ground into the stone and reducing the cutting power of some of the surface area. This is a polishing stone, not a sharpeniing stone. It polishes the edge you put on with the 1000 grit stone. It polishes the bevels to a near mirror edge as well as helping to remove the little wire edge that ends up on all sharpenings. Now strop the edge (fatigue the wire edge till it comes off), you will know when it is complete when you run a finger UP the bevel and do not feel a small lip at the top where the edge is located. If you still feel the edge then strop some more; in a pinch, you can even strop on the palm of your hand. Remember to strop both sides alternately till the wire edge is gone. Now back to the 6000 grit stone and with LIGHT pressure, refinish the edge again but stop short of putting another wire edge on the blade. The edge now should cut newspaper when only supported by one side. Just remember one rule, the higher the bevel angle the lower the "Feel" and fine cutting power of the edge in general and the lower the angle the sharper the blade will feel. There is a trade off with high bevel angles on an axe that will keep the axe sharp longer and the low angle of a knife where it will require sharpening more often.

Now, wash off the stone surfaces and use an old cloth to scrup the surfaces. Get and use a Nagura stone to do a final cleaning and leveling of the 6000 grit side. Never use a Nagura stone on anything less than 6000 grit or you will eat it up and prematurely wear out the stone. Just keep in mind, the Nagura is for cleaning and trueing the 6000 and higher grit stones and should not be used as a sharpening stone itself. The second use for the Nagura stone is to create the sharpening "lather" needed to speed up the sharpening process. Place the stone under water and then to the work stone and act as if you are working on the edge. This process may need to be done 3 or 4 times. You will note a foam form on the top of your cutting edge mixed with a lot of water. Now sharpen your edge. You will get a faster and sharper knife.

I have been a carpenter for almost 12 years. The first 6 years were mainly rough carpentry and my stone of choice was an oil stone. I have since moved on to finish carpentry and woodworking. Razor sharp chisels and planes are a must now! And this combination stone, along with a 800-1000 grit waterstone, produce mirror sharp edges that last a long time. And, unlike an oil stone, waterstones can be honed flat again and cut the metal much faster. And you don't have to worry about the stone cloging.

Buy King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit Waterstone Now

These King Stones are legitimate Japanese Water Stones made in, you guessed it, Japan. They are extremely versitile and are the highest quality stones I have used. However, there are a few more good companies out there. Water stones are true to the craft of knife honing and sharpening and is a useful skill to teach yourself. I highly recommend watching virtuovice (YouTube Name) on YouTube for excellent tutorials on how to sharpen with stones.

The lower grit stones like the 250 and 400 are great for taking out chips in the blades or reprofiling the edge to fit your needs or preferences. As a camper who beats on knifes and axes, I really need this benefit to take out those chips and these stones do so beautifully.

A good stone grit to breach the gab between the lower grits and the finishing stone is the 1000 grit. This will help smooth out the edge and give it some great sharpness. It also makes finishing the edge with a 3000 or 4000 grit stone an easier and less time-consuming step in the process. 6000 and 8000 grit stones are not needed at all in my opinion. Finally, you should use a leather strop with a green and black compound to really get a good edge.

Bottom Line and Reccommending Sharpening System:

1.) 250/1000 grit King Water Stone

2.) 3000 or 4000 grit King Stone

3.) Leather strop with compound

You only really need the 250, 1000, and 3000 (or 4000) grit stones with the strop. I have seen the strop put a better edge than 8000 grit stones. Keep in mind a strop is only 30 bucks or so, and you could almost spend $100 on an 8000 grit stone. This reccommended sytem will make a butter knife scary sharp if you wanted it too. However, the stones are expensive and will loose shape over time depending on how much you use them. But the time you use them will definitely yield better results than a spyderco Sharpmaker (I have one). I also reccommend some sort of a stone holder like the Steelex Sharpening Stone Holder. This works well and makes it easier to work with.

Very good whetstone for regular use. Will sharpen any kitchen knife without ruining its edge if you know what you're doing, be they German knives (I use it with my Wusthofs) or more delicate Japanese knives, such as Global or Shun. Highly recommended.

Want King 47506 1000/6000 Combination Grit Waterstone Discount?

I have gone nuts with this thing. I have sharpened every knife in the kitchen except the steak knives with this awesome combo. The 1000 grit (brown side) is perfect for sharpening up dull knives and the 6000 grit (beige side) polishes the edge to a highly reflective, almost mirror finish.

HOWEVER, this combo is not good for an extremely dull edge or for a blade that needs to be re-profiled. It is possible to slowly re-profile with the 1000 grit, but for me it was an arduous and ultimately wasteful task. I ended up buying a 400/800 grit Norton tool sharpening stone from Home Depot for the knife I had to re-profile.

In conclusion, I am extremely satisfied with this combo King Stone, it does what it's supposed to do. I sharpen my knives at 15 degrees a side on 1000 then 6000, then I strop carefully with a paddle-backed leather strop and stropping compound from Bark River (not on Amazon). This results in crazy sharp knives.

The next step is Chosera stones, they are much more expensive, but I hear they are the cats pajamas :)

NOTE: I was not careful with the 6000 grit side at first and used too steep an angle, the knife actually bit into the 6000 grit and took off a small shallow chunk, the stone is still working great though.

Chef'n Parmesan Grater Ergonomic Parmesan Stainless Steel Cheese Grater, Apricot

Chef'n Parmesan Grater Ergonomic Parmesan Stainless Steel Cheese Grater, ApricotThis was an impulse purchase at the grocery store; I'd never heard of this brand. I've used it for parmesan and cheddar so far and am very pleased. It's easy to hold at a slant or simply rest on a board (with a hand on the large ring handle) to grate. It doesn't slip around because of the silicone feet, and its curved surface allows turning the cheese at different angles so none is wasted. Little tools like this that really work are a joy to have.

Love it, easy to use, easy to clean! and doesn't take too much space.

I'ts been a year since i bought it and i use it very often for grating aged parmesan cheese, dry hard bread, lemon or orange zest, and looks feels like new.

Ginkgo Celtic 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1

Ginkgo Celtic 5-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Place Setting, Service for 1Unique design; reminiscent of medieval, celtic, Arts & Crafts, and renaissance motifs. Beautifully balanced something you might appreciate if you've ever owned poorly balanced flatware. Nice weight, perfect size, looks and feels wonderful. This flatware is superb quality and would look stunning on any table from casual to formal.

This are very attractive however, the spoons are not finished well. They have very sharp edges and they will cut you. My wife cut her tongue and lips when she went to use them. The entire set went back immediately.

Chef'sChoice Limited Edition Professional Sharpening Station, #130LE

Chef'sChoice Limited Edition Professional Sharpening Station, #130LEHaving sharpened my own knives for years, this greatly simplifies the task, leaves the blades with a great edge, and works quickly. I'd buy again and recommend to my friends.

This seems to be a well made, durable product. I used it to sharpen a few knives that were just laying around in the drawer because they were too dull to be used for much. They all sharpened up very well and I now have plenty of (and will keep) sharp knives. Easy to understand instructions, easy to sharpen the knives to a fine utility use edge. I recommend this product to the average kitchen.

Does not do nearly the job I thought it would. Knives get relativity sharp but do not hold edge. Chef's Choice was hard to deal with and would not pay return shipping. I thought they should since this product did not live up to expectations. I have since gone to a belt sander for $35 and it does a fantastic job.

Magisso Cake Server - Purple Plastic

Magisso Cake Server - Purple PlasticAlton Brown refuses to buy any kitchen instrument with only one purpose, and this one has 2 very nice ones for me. I have it hanging on my kitchen wall to bring a nice little ambiance of modern art to the place and it does work relatively well for cutting cake. I've so far bought one for myself and given 3 as gifts.

Magnetic Knife Bar, Plastic Base

Winco 13' Magnetic Bar with Plastic BaseThis product is cheap, strong, and looks nice. One 18" rack can hold almost 10 knives very securely and it also comes with the mounting hardware. I bought two since it was such a great price.

LOL. They were stuck to each other....through the boxes! So yes, they have grip! I had to test my knives on it, and they did, right through the box, so I know it will work as soon as my husband mounts in on the wall.....

Buy Magnetic Knife Bar, Plastic Base Now

My wife and I fell victim for the cheap price tag. And that's exactly what we got--CHEAP!

This item is completely useless as a knife holder. Upon taking it out of the box, we found only a 2" area was strong enough to hold a knife! The other 11" was a huge "dead spot", not even strong enough to hold our smallest paring knife or a metal ruler.

It makes for quite an awkwardly utilitarian fridge magnet, but that's the best that can be said about this brick of plastic and metal. Save your money, don't even consider this item any further.

Kitchen Utility Cart

Kitchen Utility CartThe quality of this product was not what I expected. Mine did not have the cutting board, but instead two drawers. Also, and this is more my mistake for not paying closer attention to the measurements, but once assembled the cart stands about two and half feet, which is an awkward height to be at (and I am a short person). I will say that it is cute though, just not the most functional product.

J.A. Henckels International Forged Premio 18-Piece Block Set

J.A. Henckels International Forged Premio 18-Piece Block SetI had been looking to purchase a nicer, but not overly expensive, set of knives as my older set had seen better days. i bought these despite the lack of reviews, and after using them for a couple of weeks i love them. they have a wonderful feel in your hand, nice and heavy for their size, extremely sturdy. they are very sharp right out of the box with a sharpening steel that works well. the steak knives are great, they are clean, black, and professional looking and would definitely fit in with any nice set of china or flatware.

the only thing i can think to say is that the paring knife is a little awkward, the grip almost feels too big, or perhaps the blade is too small, but that my just be me. overall a great set of knives for someone who wants quality, reliable cutlery without spending 500+ dollars. i intend on using this set for quite some time into the future.

Look, flat out, these knives are probably going to be more than you'll ever need. If you're wondering if this set is going to be good enough for you, then you don't know enough about chef knives to require the $279 Wusthof Santoku that only a chef could appreciate. Besides, most people don't realize that there's more than a hefty price tag to a fancy knife: maintenance. Yes, even the nicest of knives can't hold an edge forever, and the high level of professional care and maintenance required to keep those knives that way is only worth it to the most serious of cooks.

For those of you who are home cooks who want to treat themselves to something nice for their kitchen, this is the highest level of cutlery you'll require. These knives require just the right amount of care to make them worth their weight, balance, and precision. I promise you, the quality will surprise you.

There are two reasons I didn't give this item 5 stars.

1) The description says "Made In Germany." I still think these are awesome, but the blade clearly says "Made in China." So, for those of you out their chastising us reviewers for no noticing the "International" in the title, the description still needs to be fixed.

...on a more practical note...

2) These knives definitely could have a sharper edge than the one out of the box. Depending on your skill and/or devotion, I would recommend either investing in some sharpening blocks and training, or take them to a professional. I tend to stay away from those "insta-sharpen" products, but that's just me. If treated correctly, these knives are more than capable of having a razor edge.

I bought these knives after looking at Costco, Sam's club, Bed, Bath and Beyond, and a number of online venues. I finally ordered these despite the lack of reviews. I was a little disappointed to see that my knives were on back order. It stated that they were going to be shipped in two months. I was pleasantly surprised when they showed up three weeks later. This is the best price I could find for the the amount of knives you get, especially for the high quality of Henckels. I have had the knives for about two months, they are great! They feel great in your had and cut extremely well. I absolutely love them! I would highly recommend this set to anyone. As stated earlier, if you are after a high quality knife set this was the best bang for your buck I could find. All of the knives are forged, even the steak knives, which is something that may differ between other Henckel block sets.

J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 13-Piece Knife Set

J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 13-Piece Knife SetMy wife and I have been using this 13-piece set of Forged Synergy knives for about 8 months, and we couldn't be happier with them. They are well made, well-balanced, have beautiful handles, a nice finish, and hold a very sharp edge--we've sliced tomatoes with all of them. If you're buying your first set of fine knives, these WILL hold up to the Henckels reputation for quality.

Now regarding what some others have said, I'll just add my two cents. There is a "Forged Synergy" and a "Fine Edge Synergy" series, and the main kitchen knives in those sets are NOT the same (though the steak knives appear to be so). The forged series has a metal tine that runs all the way through the handle with the black grips riveted on. The J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13-Piece Block Set is totally different--see the Amazon photos and descriptions for yourself. Yes, this Forged Synergy set is also made in China (not Spain or Germany like some of the more expensive Henckels sets), but the quality is still excellent and should far surpass most users' expectations.

Regarding rust spots, we've had none. However, there are two main types of stainless steel: one is harder and slightly less stain resistant; the other is more stain resistant but slightly softer. That means that you give up a little stain resistance to have a knife that holds a sharper edge longer. I think that's much more important than having to clean an occasional rust spot off if it were to occur.

There are only two minor faults I find with this set (that didn't stop me from buying it, however). The kitchen shears are excellent quality and cut great, but the two parts should be easily separable for cleaning purposes. You'll see this in newer shear designs, and it's not a feature that would add to the cost. Also, the black finished knife block will eventually show wear and tear from missing when inserting knives into the slots. I'd have prefered a standard maple block. Lastly, for a few dollars more, I'd recommend the 16-piece version of this set which includes three more knives for about the price of one more (J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 16-Piece Knife Set).

I've worked in professional kitchens in my youth, so I know good knives and what to expect from them. My wife and I received these as a wedding present after registering for them, and though we've only had them 6 months so far they have been awesome. The knives do fit in the block just fine, contrary to what I read in another review. They have not rusted, also contrary to what I've read. The have a great balance on the blade, they handle extremely well, and they hold their edge for a long time before needing sharpening. The only complaint I would have about the set is that it didn't include every knife I could ever need, but the block does have extra slots in it and that's why I'm looking at Amazon.com today to add some more knives to the set. I would suggest picking up a bread knife at the same time you get the set, it only has a short serrated utility knife in it. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this set.

Wallace Resplendence 65-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 12

Wallace Resplendence 65-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 12I have a set of Resplendence and found this set on Amazon. I was so excited to add to my existing set at such a reasonable price; especially since it's a discontinued pattern from Wallace. Too good to be true :( The box, paperwork, printing looked EXACTLY like the real deal. The flatware was junk! :( It was stamped 18/10 but having real Wallace Resplendence, I could easily feel the weight difference.."extremely light". In addition, the pattern was a poor imitation with shallow detail and the thickness of the pieces were half the proper depth. Wallace Resplendence 18/10 was even stamped on the TOP side of a spoon instead of the underside. What a disappointment. I called Amazon, reported my disgust, and returned it.

We ordered 2 sets and both arrived very quickly. Its sophisticated yet uncomplicated design works well our good china as well as our everyday dishes. I actually think it is nicer in person than in the picture. Pieces are a good weight giving them a very solid feel. We use this flatware everyday and it has stood up well in the dishwasher. Kyocera Revolution Series 3-1/7-Inch Paring Knife, Black Blade

Kyocera Revolution Series 3-1/7-Inch Paring Knife, Black BladeThe fact that you are even reading this suggests that you already know the arguments in favor of ceramic knives. Ceramic knives are harder than steel knives, can be made much sharper than steel knives, hold their edge ten times longer than steel knives, are lighter than steel knives, won't brown foods, transfer a metallic taste or smell, or rust.

You probably also know the disadvantages of ceramic knives. Unlike steel knives ceramic knives can chip or break so you want to avoid dropping them, tossing them in a sink or kitchen drawer, or arguably even washing them in a dishwasher. (Most ceramic knives come in fitted plastic packing material that can be saved, or you can store them in something like this Kyocera Bamboo 3-Slot Knife Block.) If you actually succeed in dulling a ceramic knife, it will need to be professionally sharpened, though Kyocera has come out with a sharpener for home use: Kyocera Electric Diamond Knife Sharpener for Kyocera Ceramic Knives. Unlike steel knives ceramic knives cannot flex without breaking so there can be no such thing as a ceramic boning knife, and you only want to use ceramic knives to cut boneless meats. Finally, although using a proper cutting board is a good idea with fine steel knives, it is an absolute requirement with ceramic knives; using a ceramic knife to cut something on a plate is an absolute no-no.

So the only remaining question is whether to go cheap: Harbor Freight Tools Ceramic 3 Inch Paring Knife or expensive: Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle, Black Blade, and due to the fortuitous timing of a couple of good sales I can offer an opinion.

Blade: The Harbor Freight blade is double bevel ground while the Kyocera Revolution blade is chisel ground. Along with Kyocera's claims that its micro-grain ceramic is more dense than its competitors, this should result in a sharper blade, but any difference was too subtle for me to detect. Both knives will be MUCH sharper than any steel knife you are used to, cutting through citrus rinds (and even seeds!) like butter.

Handle: Both the Harbor Freight and Kyocera Revolution have superficially similar ergonomic handles, but I noted a couple of significant differences. In the Harbor Freight the finger guard is part of the handle while in the Kyocera Revolution it is part of the blade. Surprisingly, I found the Kyocera Revolution handle a bit slippery, which in light of the consequences of dropping it is significant. The tackier surface of the Harbor Freight handle provided me with a surer grip.

Color: The Kyocera Revolution paring knife is also available with a white blade in six handle colors:

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Black Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Blue Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Green Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Orange Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Red Handle,

Kyocera Revolution Series Ceramic 3 1/7 Inch Paring Knife Yellow Handle;

the Harbor Freight paring knife is available in any handle color,...

as long as it is black.

Sharpening: If you manage to dull your Kyocera Revolution knife, Kyocera will sharpen it in return for shipping and handling; if you manage to dull your Harbor Freight knife, you are on your own.

Price: This obviously varies but in most cases you can expect to pay between twice as much and four times as much for the Kyocera Revolution paring knife as for the Harbor Freight paring knife.

Note: An inexpensive Kyocera Ceramic Y Peeler in all of the matching handle colors, is also available.

These knives are extremely sharp and seem to hold an edge but the blade is thicker than steel and consequently the blade tends to get stuck in food that doesn't just fall away. Other than that these knives are great. They slice a ripe tomato without crushing and raw meat with ease. I use these knives as often as I can.

Works like an oyster knife is supposed to work. Handle has a good grip and the blade is stout. Seems sturdy, like it should last a lifetime. The thickness of the tip makes it a bit difficult on some shells to get started.

I'll admit, I'm not sure how to go about picking the right oyster knife but this one wasn't for me. i wish the end was a bit pointier.

While a bit pricey, this knife has a handle that makes it safe to use and a blade strong enough to go through a lot of oysters. In addition, the blade is long enough to open the oyster and to go into the shell and sever the adductor muscle so as to remove the oyster. It must have been an appealing product, as a number of them disappeared from our recent oyster roast. I would recommend this to serious oyster aficionados.

Kuhn Rikon Avocado Knife Colori

Kuhn Rikon Avocado Knife ColoriI'm not one to purchase single-use kitchen gadgets, but I had to try this one out of shear curiosity. I LOVE IT! It really cleans out the avacado flesh and leaves little to no waste. It's handy to use and easy to clean. Just get one, you won't be disappointed.

I rate this Kuhn Rikon Avocado knife "nearly awesome" if only for it's ability to get the entire avo half out with the cool curved blade! Do we get the pit out with it? No doesn't seem to work for us. Do we use it to slice the avocado? No, we have decent knives. But NOTHING we have gets the avocado separated from it's peel as beautifully as this little baby. You love avocados, you'll love the Kuhn Ricon Avocado knife!

I love avocados and often eat at least one every day. This is by far the best avocado scooper tool available.

While the serrated "blade" will cut the skin and the two prong will extract the pit, I find a knife works better for these functions. But as a "scooper" this tool extracts the avocado completely and leaves virtually nothing remaining in the skin, regardless the size or shape of the avocado. Nothing else I've tried comes close.

I now own 3 of these tools.

I had been cutting, pitting etc all by hand for years. I saw this on Amazon and ordered one. Very glad I did. Well built little tool that makes the whole process much better.

About every six weeks I purchase a dozen avocadoes and make up a huge batch of homemade guacamole, which I divide up into single portion (3 fl oz) cans for freezing. This tool makes the task of skinning and de-pitting the avocadoes a lot quicker. Since the time I received it, I estimate that I've handled about 84 to 96 avocadoes with it. So I rely on it quite a bit.

Oneida Dover Steak Knife Set, Set of 4

Oneida Dover Steak Knife Set, Set of 4I was in need of new steak knives and decided to try and match a new set with my Oneida flatware. I own the Satin Dover but unfortunately the steak knives are only available in the Dover (shiny finish). I ordered the knives anyway and am very happy I did. I actually like the contrast of the satin finish vs the shiny finish. I know when the table is set that the steak knives are in use as opposed to the dinner knives. It's so nice having all my flatware patterns match. I'm fussy that way. I'm pleased with this purchase.

The knives are nice, but not the same shape as the steak knives that I purchased from Oneida many years ago. The blade end is wider and not as graceful looking.

Kai USA AB5072 Pure Komachi 2 Chef's Knife, 6-Inch

Kai USA AB5072 Pure Komachi 2 Chef's Knife, 6-InchWe really cook a lot and when we moved into our new apartment we bought several knives of this brand. We were not expecting much for the price and were very much surprised at the quality of these knives. They are very stable and really sharp. We have been using thema every day now for several weeks and can not finde anything negative to say about them. I really like the bright colors, too. Especially if you get several different knives of this brand it adds some color to the kitchen!

Update: After 4 months of heavy use, all our knives of this brand are still doing great.

glad there is a plastic sheath that comes with this item, cant wait to see how it holds up, will update this review in a few months after dragging this knife thru the daily grind. mostly purchased for cutting meat and veggies.

I like this Chef's knife. I have never had a chef's knife so am learning how to chop the proper way with this knife. It is just the right size for me at 6". I like it.

Again, My mom loves this. I got a few so I do not have to sharpen over and over. I can never get a knife as sharp as the factory.

The knife handle is too small. It is uncomfortable when using. I did like the color, as well as the sharpness of the blade.
