The good news is the steel holds an edge well, does not rust like many cheap knives do, and the molded handles are food safe, meaning no crevices or rivets to catch bits of food. This is the style of handle used on knives the pro chefs use, for sanitary reasons. This set is a nice wedding gift, has everything and then some, and I think it's a good deal for an experienced chef too.
In practice, though, for prep you won't need all of these. It's great having them once in a while, but you can get by with only three. You'll need a good paring knife, a good 8" chef's knife, and a bread knife that covers almost everything. I put stars in the list below by those knives. I know this huge assortment looks better as a gift, but if you have to limit yourself, you can downsize to just a few.
The set contains these 23 pieces:
2 1/4" peeling knife
3" flat cut paring knife
3" spear point paring knife *
3" clip point paring knife
4 1/2" utility knife
5" brunch knife
8" bread knife *
8" cook's knife *
(8) 4 1/2" steak knives
8" slicing knife
6" kitchen fork
5" boning knife
6" cook's knife
9" steel
kitchen shears
22-slot block
