I use a whetstone when sharpening because it does not leave any scratches on the blade--but it takes a lot of time and some deft skill. For a regurlar person who wants a razor sharp knife this steel will work just great--it will sharpen Chinese steel in a few strokes--which is good, because the Chinese don't make quality stainless steel at all--so you will be sharpening a lot. Worth every dime, and will last through many generations to come. You get what you pay for!
