Dalla Piazza Foil Cutter

Dalla Piazza Foil CutterThis is a follow-up to a review of this same product I did in 2006 Dalla Piazza Stainless Steel Foil Cutter. It's now 3.5 years later, the blades are slightly worn, but it's still going strong. I would buy again in a second!

Orig. review:

Short of sounding like a couple of lushes, to say my wife and I enjoy wine is a bit of an understatement. We have a speed wine opener, but have torn through several cheap plastic foil cutters. We finally decided it was time to get a quality one.

After reading Amazon reviews, we ended up with BonJour World's Best Foil Cutter. I was a bit surprised to see it was all plastic except for the blades, and my wife *hated* the amount of downward pressure required to use it (pushing down engages the blades). However, I was extremely surprised to have it break after 4 months. As a result, to vent my frustration I wrote up a one star review of that product.

Now back to the search and I saw this stainless steel cutter. I'm not sure if I missed it during the first search, or just ignored it because there were no reviews of it yet. However, this cutter is, in a word, awesome!

It's all metal so it has a good, solid feel when holding it. The jaws are spring loaded and stop slightly wider than a bottle opening. Squeeze, a quick twist left and right, and you have a perfect cut.

I'll admit, I didn't expect this kind of construction for what I consider an extremely low price, but wow! This is probably the best "value per dollar" purchase I've *ever* made!

On one of the cheapie plastic ones we previously owned, it had a magnet on the frame, which made it handy to store. The Dalla Piazza does not have a magnet, which would be the only improvement I'd want (and then there's probably an equal number of people who wouldn't want the magnet). However, that was an easy fix with a little epoxy. Now it truly is perfect. I love it, my wife loves it Look no further, this is the cutter you want.

This handsome little device works like a dream and is far superior to cheaper plastic grip versions. One small caveat: the arms do not extend quite far enough get around the larger necks on 1.5 liter bottles.

When my plastic foil cutter broke I looked on Amazon for a replacement. There were a bunch for around $7. Then a stumbled across this and figured for a few extra bucks I get something that at least looks nice and (from reading the reviews) might even do the job.

Turns out it was a good decision. This thing is solid metal and the chrome finish gives it a quality appearance. Sure, it's made in China but you don't see that unless you look close and otherwise it does look like something from Italy or some other exotic location :)

Saving the best for last, it does a great job of cutting the foil from the top of a wine bottle. I figure it cost me $7 for the "function" and an extra $3 for the "form". Seems an excellent value to me.

BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews can take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. I've always appreciated the help I've received from other reviewers and work hard to return the favor as best as I can. I hope you found this review helpful and if there was anything you thought was lacking or unclear leave a comment and I'll do what I can to fix it.

Thomas McDonald's glowing review convinced me to buy this one and I'm very glad that I did. I even added a magnet as he suggested. The cutter is very well made, more than reasonably priced and is a pleasure to use and a minor joy to behold.

Not only does it behave better than cheap (or expensive) plastic ones, it looks a great deal better too. Highly recommended.

I ordered this for my husband, who is a big wine enthusiast. We drink mostly Pinot Noir, regular sized bottles and this doesn't open wide enough to fit over the top of the bottles. The way it is made, you can squeeze it a little tighter once you slide it over the top to do the cutting, but it doesn't fit over most bottles. I keep pulling it out to try, but I'm giving up and ordering a different one today.
