I am almost embarrassed to admit how many Laguiole cheese sets I've acquired, but suffice to say that I am hooked. And for good reasons in my opinion.
First, compulsive personality aside, this set is exceptionally well crafted. Consider that a run-of-the-mill cheese knife set that is mass produced in an Asian factory is probably going to retail for about the same twenty-six bucks this is going for at the time of this review. Granted, some of the materials will probably be identical, and perhaps the craftsmanship will be close to the untrained eye. But there is something to be said for tradition, and this set was made in accordance with a longstanding tradition of pride and craftsmanship in Thiers France.
Second, the design and balance of any Laguiole utensil or instrument is unique to that brand. The reason I included 'instrument' is I have a Laguiole made fountain pen too! There is something about the shape and curves that seems to magically distribute the weight of these knives and corkscrew. It is that characteristic that fuels my addiction.
Another nice touch for every genuine Laguiole product is the wood box in which it ships. The box itself is nothing particularly special. Just wood with a cutout for each utensil. But it is almost a tradition to ship their products in such a box, and the box comes in handy in organizing your utensils in a drawer. There is no top there never is (at least for the sets I own).
This makes a perfect gift, or a no-nonsense cheese and wine set that was designed to be used instead of displayed.
