Wusthof Gourmet 2-Piece Cutlery Utility Set

Wusthof Gourmet 2-Piece Cutlery Utility SetThe picture shows the set with the markings Solingen Germany on the knife and scissor blades. My set is missing those markings. There are no markings anywhere on the knife or scissors that indicate where they are made. The box is missing that information, as well.

The knife is also missing the geometric design to the right of the blade markings.

The sticker on the handle has sharp square corners, while the picture on the Wusthof site shows a red square with rounded corners.

This makes me concerned that they are no longer made in Germany.

The knife did not pass the newspaper test when new, and cannot be sharpened to pass the newspaper test. It does not hold an edge as well as my older (German) Wusthofs.

There are at least three versions of this knife, all with the same number. Two say Solingen Germany, but are marked a little differently. They appear to come from two different factories. And the one with no country marking at all.

Despite their site's claim "Made in Germany", Wusthof does admit that "they are really busy and have to outsource", but will not tell what country. Why would that be? And, of course, they mumble the usual evasive corporate drivel about quality control, specifications, standards, etc.

Interestingly, the prices are the same. It is up to the buyer to select the quality or country of origin he desires.

The scissors seem to cut OK, but we don't have very high standards for our general use kitchen scissors. They have metal teeth in the handles for gripping stubborn caps. The teeth are horribly out of alignment. They do not meet together, but on two different planes, about 3/16" apart. And the scissors are fairly flexible, owing to their light construction. This means that the harder you squeeze, the more it twists your thumb and fingers as you attempt to open a stubborn cap.

My advice is to buy only German Wusthof at the regular price, or expect a substantial price reduction for the one produced in the secret country. It is very shabby of a formerly great company to charge just as much for a knife produced at a much lower cost.

Have used the knife and scissors for several months now. both performing and holding up very well. hand-washing only, by choice. the picture shows a 4060/10 cm paring knife, but what comes is a 4022/8 cm paring knife. like i said, i like the 4022 just fine, but you are not getting what you think you are. the 4022 sells for 12.95 on amazon and the 4060 for 18.95. not that big a deal, but worth considering. the scissors are th 5888, as advertised.

Wanted a new pair of kitchen shears, and have had good luck with Wusthof in the past. Well the scissors are great, very sharp, crisp cutting, and when fully opened, the two sides come apart for easy cleaning every time.

As an added bonus, the small knife,(a touch smaller then average paring knife)if a great addition to our set too! Very sharp, feels great in the hand, and is perfect for quick small jobs such as dicing ham for omlettes, cutting cherry tomatoes, etc..

Both pieces are top notch for the price, and were well received as a gift by my wife, from me!

The scissors are functional and suitable for light-duty work, though the handles feel a little awkward, and I'm not sure these scissors would be up to serious dissection of fowl or anything like that. The knife is an unexpectedly nice throw-in: it holds a sharp edge and has been surprisingly useful. If I'd paid $52 (the putative list price) I'd feel kind of disappointed, but for $20 I say fine.

I needed a good pair of kitchen scissors. Two piece design for cleaning was a must. The scissors have worked better than expected. Sharp and sturdy. Easy to clean too.

The knife was a bonus, and we enjoy using it regularly.
