Lansky 4 Rod Gourmet Crock Stick Sharpener

Lansky 4 Rod Gourmet Crock Stick SharpenerI recently purchased this product from Amazon. I had VERY high expectations for this product since I have owned one for over 25 years (Since about 1980). The first one I accidentally dropped and broke one of the rods a few weeks back. Rather than just purchase a replacement rod (Which is what in hind site I should have) I selected to purchase the gourmet 4 rod version in order to get the MED as well as the Fine rod I broke.

Once again the original one I had was absolutely the best sharpener I had ever owned, but will now never purchase again due to customer support.

The replacement rods were not rounded off, just straight cuts therefore cheaper to make, They don't fit into receptacle as well You can move them about 5-7 degrees(about 3/4 of an inch of movement. in all but 1 of the holes, they were oversized compared to the rods.

The holes in the base of the wood were NOT Correct angles, and the holes were over drilled as to cause the required angles to be incorrect 5-7 degrees off, you could move the sticks about 1/2-3/4 inch in each direction. This also caused the sticks to rotate and move while attempting to sharpen the knife (Not good if you want a razoe edge to slice with).

I contacted Lanskey and they told me that they would not pay for the return shipping or even give me a replacement. I would have to pay for all transfers to them.

All I wanted them to do was send me out a replacement piece of WOOD. WOOD! .Not the sticks, just the wood correctly drilled.

She told me that they wouldn't do that unless I sent the entire thing back AT MY EXPENSE.

There fore I am giving this sharpener a 1 rating because of Lansky customer support.

I wish they had simply replaced the improperly drilled piece of wood that would have cost them maybe 1.00, but they didn't and lost a very old customer.

So much for customer focus and returning customers of 25+ YEARS. And now I will have to contact the dozens of people that I had recommended this sharpener to and tell them to NOT purchase a good product since they can expect NO customers support from the manufacture.

THEREFORE I WOULD GO SOMEWHEREELSE TO GET A SHARPNER Not Lansky. I have returned this to AMAZON as defective due to the incorrect drilling of the holes.

This is a relatively straightforward item. Four rods (two different grits) I am not quite sure if this is the right terminology, four holes for two different mount choices (not angles), a hand guard and eight holes below for storage which are spring loaded.

When mounted the rods sharpen beautifully. However, the hand guard is not squared off and was put on crooked. The storage holes have springs in them on one side for spring loaded storage. However, the springs were put in crooked so the rods fall out occasionally.

This could have been an excellent product if Lansky had paid better attention to details. I am surprised at their quality control. I opted not to return the item even though I have every reason to. I didn't want to go through the hassle. I just store my rods in the old case from another manufacturer and use the other manufacturers holder. I will never buy another Lansky prodct again. Surprisingly, the packaging does not say where it was made.

This is the simplest way to keep a keen edge on all of your kitchen knives. If you can't get a shaving sharp edge in a few passes, then it is time to take your knives to the professionals for sharpening.

The reality of keeping a good knife sharp is in the daily (or, at least frequent) maintenance of the edge. Once the edge is so far gone that these tools don't correct the problem you need a professional.

If you use your knives daily you may need a professional once a year if not you may need a professional every 2-3 years. In between, this is the slickest sharpening system you can find assuming that you don't want to become a pro at keeping the edge yourself.

Read the manual and keep the rods clean or they won't cut.

I've spent about 5 years of my life working in a cutlery shop with a sharpening service.

I've played around with many types of sharpeners over the years. Stones made out of industrial diamond, natural stone and ceramic, V sharpeners, steels, my trusty belt sander and clamp systems.

I was looking for something to replace my quite dilapidated Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker for every day tasks, and remembered using "crock sticks" in my shop quite a bit for smaller tasks and polishing blade edges, so I snagged this set.

First impression is that the other reviews don't lie. There are plenty of manufacturing imperfections that are quite annoying with this set. For one, some of the drilled holes are fractionally too small for the rods. This includes the sharpening positions and the storage holes underneath the unit. This becomes increasingly apparent when you realize the coarse rods are slightly larger than the fine rods, so I currently have to wedge them in rather than fully insert them. It's an annoyance, but it'll work out over time and use. At least the set angles seem to be accurate.

The packaging could be improved as well, as a couple of the rods were not fully secure in the base of the unit so they had the potential to bash into each other during shipping. That makes me nervous as I know how brittle those rods are (Accidentally drop one on a tile floor or a rock and you're pretty much guaranteed to need replacements).

Overall, If I were to replace this unit, I would purchase one from Idahone Idahone V-Type Ceramic Rod Sharpener with 4 rods rather than this Lansky. It was the brand we carried for this type of sharpening device (Idahone); they take much more care during the manufacturing and packaging of their units and seem to use slightly higher quality materials. They are more expensive though and they both do the job they're designed for equally well. It's just the difference in the fit and finish.

Bottom line is the rods werent even close to fitting the places that hold them. Yes you have a possabilty of drilling the holes to make them able to hold the rods, but you paided money for something that isnt what it was sapposed to be, period........ The good thing is that amazon was still great with the item and gave my money back without one single problem.....
