This thing is nice and big. I haven't opened the package because I don't know if I want to replace my older one or give it as a present. For $10 it's well worth it. I use my other one every day.Read Best Reviews of MIU France Forged Sharpening Steel, 10-Inches Here
The product is nicely constructed and packaged, the delivery was ontime as I have come to expect from Amazon. I was surprised to see "Made in China" stamped on its base. The name MIU France gives the impression that it would be made in France. China doesn't have a very good reputation for quality metallurgy so I'll be surprised if my German knives don't wear down the sharpening steel.Want MIU France Forged Sharpening Steel, 10-Inches Discount?
I have been using one of these steels for over a year now, and it has given excellent results, and kept my knives in good shape. Just to clarify, this is a honing steel, meant for resetting the blade of your knife to a straight edge, and will NOT sharpen a dull knife. In principle, you are looking for something that will "iron out" the kinks your knife blade has received through regular use, so that your knife can be more effective at cutting. Using one of these steels is something you should expect to do regularly to keep your knife working well, while you should sharpen your knife less frequently, like once a year (also, sharpening should be done by a professional if you have really high-end knives).I have found that I use the steel weekly, and have been happy with the results, even with my more expensive chef's knife. I just rest the tip of the steel on my cutting board, angle my knife at the appropriate angle (this will vary with the type of knife you havemine is vary shallow, around 10-15 degrees), and drag the edge of the blade across the steel. I do about 10 passes on each side of the blade (takes like 30 seconds, tops), and I see a noticeable difference in my knife's cutting ability.
This steel is well made and the handle feels greatits also nice and long, so there's lot of area for you to hone your knife. Also, the weight makes it easy to firmly plant on your cutting board or whatever without a lot of movementso its more precise. The ridges are adequately spaced, and the design works well.
Overall, I think this is a well made product that does its job and is a great value for the price. Its not flashy or fancy, but this type of thing doesn't need to be.
