Jean Dubost Laguiole 3-piece Cheese Knife Set

You usually get what you pay for with cheese knife sets, but this one is a bargain. It has the famous (and highly functional) Laguiole design that combines balance with craftsmanship. It's beautiful and and has a knife or spreader for most major cheeses soft, medium and hard.

What I love is the sharp, balanced blade and handle combinations. This is especially useful on the 'presentation' knife (the one on the left with the forked tip.) Because of the design I rarely need to use the cleaver-style knife for hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Asiago because the presentation knife has the balance and incredibly well designed blade to cut right through those.

The spreader is one of my most used tools when I am enjoying French cheeses because I am practically addicted to Bire, which it easily spreads even cold. It also works well with Roquefort, as well as Gorgonzola if it has settled at room temperature.

Another plus is the wood case it was not designed to be a presentation case with a glass top. Instead it's a practical addition that is supposed to be used like a drawer organizer that serves two purposes: it keeps all of the knives in one place instead of rolling around in a utensil drawer, and it keeps them from cutting you as you grab other utensils from the drawer. Safe and functional.

As a gift this is sure to bring a smile to the recipient. As a personal set for serving at meals or even out for cheese tastings this set will handle any major type of cheese, making it versatile.

I have a set of these knives, and am extremely happy with the quality. With that being said, I bought these as a wedding gift for a good friend. It was difficult to tell from the picture, that there is not a cover over the knives, except a thin plastic, that once removed, will not keep the knives securely in place. It is disappointing for storing a great set of knives, that they will fall out of their box.
