Back in my younger days I had the patience to try and draw a knife against a soft Arkansas or washita at a consistent precise angle to get a razor edge. As I got older I used guides and Lansky sharpeners to save time. I went to diamond hones as the technology got better. I don't have the time or patience (or skills) to use the old ways any longer. When I want a sharp knife I get out my 314 and minutes later I can have a very sharp knife. No muss no fuss no mess.
Knives that haven't been run through the sharpener before requires more time to build the proper grind angle. The sharpener is not 100% foolproof you need to know how to look at the edge to ensure the bevel is even. This is a good sharpener to have around the house as it is quick and relatively easy to use.
