The unfortunate downside is....if you're like me and keep your knives razor sharp, then whenever you take a knife in and out of the block you will be slicing some of the little plastic rods in half. I'm throwing away about 3 pieces a day, and figure the block might last me another few months before I'm forced to go out and buy another one.
The reason it doesn't get less than three stars is because at least the end result is that when it fails, it sacrifices itself instead of harming the more expensive knives (the rods aren't so tough that they dull the knives instead of being cut away). The reason it doesn't get more is because it is expensive for a knife block and won't stand the test of time. It's great being able to decide which knives I want to put where in the block. And the smaller section near the bottom is great for short-handled paring knives and my kitchen scissors. I use this mainly for my ceramic knives and am thrilled with it. Wish I had bought it sooner!
Update: 'Learned that putting the knives in 'sharp side UP' is even easier on the blades aaaaand the on the plastic rods too!

I love the flexibility of knife positioning and ease of use, but this relatively light block tips forward too easily if you have even moderately heavy knives. I have 9 mostly Globals, which are substantial but certainly not the heaviest knives on the market. I reduced the problem by removing the front two little plastic feet, drilling new holes and positioning them at the very front corners. Putting the bigger heavier knives in horizontally toward the back of the block also helps, but it still tips forward easier than it should.I really like the block otherwise. If stability continues to be a problem, I will remove the styrofoam block that is inset into the bottom of the rear section and fasten a heavy chunk of metal or other weight in its place. Of course, this is something the manufacturer should have done, not something that the user has to retrofit. Minus one star for poor stability design.

Neat knife holder. I bought this because we have several different knife sets that came with there own little blocks and was tired of ether having them all out on the counter or throwing the knives in a drawer. I do have a magnetic knife holder that is full. This holder seems to be holding up well. We cook(use the knives from this block) about 3 times a week, and its been 3 months now.
