Wusthof Ikon Care Kit for Blackwood Handles

Wusthof Ikon Care Kit for Blackwood HandlesWhen you spend a small fortune of good quality knives, most people will happily spend another $15 on a care kit.

You'd think that getting an original, manufacturer branded care kit would be a great idea, and the best way to care for your knives.

Here's the thing. For (depending on where you buy it) $10 to $15, you get a very poor quality cleaning cloth, and a tiny bottle of what appears to be semi-diluted mineral oil. My kit didn't arrive in the fancy Wusthof Ikon tin, it came in a simple unmarked blue cardboard box. The label on the bottle was stuck on poorly, black and white printed, and the cleaning cloth wasn't branded.

I'd estimate that that total cost of this kit to put together is something like 50 cents to a dollar.

Here's my advice for anyone wanting to spend the money.

1) Buy a nice bottle of mineral oil wood conditioner something like J.K. Adam's for about $6. J.K. Adams 8-Ounce Mineral Oil Wood Conditioner

Step one just gave you 8 ounces instead of one ounce.

2) You can use bounty kitchen towel to apply the oil and polish the wood. If you're inclined to use a re-usable cloth, any good quality microfiber cloth will do just fine.

As for directions use only a couple of drops of oil, rub it into the wood handles, then buff to a sheen. Very simple.

It goes without saying, mixing any kind of oil and very sharp knives is kinda dangerous. Please do be careful. I don't accept responsibility for your clumsiness, cuts, scratches or missing fingers I am perfectly capable of inflicting enough of those on myself !

I hope you get a chance to save your money :)

Cheers !
