Le Creuset Stoneware Pie Dish, Cherry, Set of 3

Le Creuset Stoneware Pie Dish, Cherry, Set of 3Bought these for my Mother in law, and I wish I could have grabbed 2, one for me. It is a nice pie set and turned out to be a bit bigger than I expected. Sturdy, durable, able to use in dishwasher and oven, and cleans up easily.

As expected, these Le Creuset stoneware dishes are quite durable. The glaze finish produces a great shine while resisting any marks normally made by knives, forks, etc. The cherry red color matches my cherry cast iron Le Creuset set very well, despite the different materials used in each piece.

As far as experience, I've only had the chanced to make one pie so far and the final product created by this dish produced was noticable better than that created by my pie tins and pyrex dishes. It also reduced my cook time by around 6-8 minutes so be sure to watch your first few pies well while you get used to these dishes.

The petite pie dies are pretty great...they are perfect for single servings of various savory pies. You should expect these to be in your family for years to come.

This is a particularly nice set for pies, especially if you like pot pies. You can adapt leftovers and various crusts to make a nice hot dinner that looks fabulous but costs very little. Turkey time (Thanksgiving and Christmas) mean leftover meats, and these can be turned into a "better than reheated" dish that most people enjoy. And the rest of the year, when chicken, turkey, even salmon or vegetables are on sale or getting long in the tooth in the fridge, you can concoct a pie in this big dish that is economical and very tasty.

The reason this dish works so well is that it is sort of a casserole as well as being a pie dish. Two smaller mini-pie or tart pans come with, though I though four would have been nicer as part of the set. But you can always add a few more tart dishes if they are popular with your household.

To make a leftover cooked meat pie, simple make up a roux or bechamel (white sauce with butter, flour, milk and seasoning) or use canned cream soup (I do not like canned cream soup so I make a bechamel.) Another alternative is a chicken gravy, essentially roux-thickened chicken broth. You then incorporate cooked veg like potato, sauteed onion, peas, leeks, carrots, parsnips, celery and your cooked poultry or fish. You top this with either biscuit dough (can be canned biscuits, I suppose) or cut up pie crust dough and make a lattice. Bake until bubbling. For some reason, this looks like really impressive food, but it's glorified leftovers with the delightful crunch of a pie top or biscuit and it's also a one pot meal, including a serving of vegetables. Kids tend to like it. If you are making one with leftover roast or pot roast, you substitute gravy (package, canned or homemade) for the bechamel sauce. The little tart size are nice for a dinner for two. You could go a bit fancier; fill the pie with salmon, rice and dill sauce, top with puff pastry (that's available frozen.) Instant very elegant coulibiac style fish pie.

If you want to use this pan for pies, it's very good for "blind baked" crusts (where you put in pie weights or beans and bake the crust before you continue to fill the pie.) But personally, I like it for main dish pies and it looks nice on the table. The beaded edge and bright color are appealing.

Only one complaint so far--they come with a paper inset that is stuck to the *inside* of the dish with the most resilient glue I've seen on a set of dishes. I tried pretty much everything to get it off before use, but couldn't get quite all of it. Not a reason not to buy it, but I'd like the product better if I didn't feel like I had to bake my first pie with a gluey spot under the crust.

The color is perfect. The brand is beautiful. The large dish works great, not too deep. The smaller plates are perfect when cooking for two.
