Jaccard Stainless Steel Mandolin / 7 BladesAlthough the product design is indeed safer than the most common mandolines, the pressure required to push the handle prongs into the holder are too demanding for older users of this equipment and I found that inserting the prongs into an onion was very difficult. The black plastic side bars that engage the stainless steel ridges slip off the ridges too easily and should have a J shaped holding device rather than the L shape presently available on this model. It cuts well however.

I have owned this for two years, so this review is not based on the typical "first impression." This mandolin has many problems. On first use, I found that the straight blade was not sharp at all; after several attempted uses, I finally sharpened it myself, which of course voided the warranty. While the device itself is stainless steel, very nice and sturdy, the blade frames are of plastic, so that the straight blade actually bends under pressure of the food going across, resulting in the edge of the food snagging on the lower steel frame. The first few uses, the blades snapped nicely and securely into place, but soon the plastic frames wore sufficiently as to not lock into place, resulting in blades that slip out of place during cutting. The julienne blades work fairly decently; as for the grater blade, well, a box grater is much faster and easier to clean. I've never even bothered with the tomato blade.

The safety grip with tines is totally unusable; the tines came out after two or three uses, and at any rate 1/3 or more of the food item does not reach the blade if you try to use the safety grip.

The thickness adjustment is accomplished with two plastic thumb screws and is awkward at best. You have to "eyeball" the desired thickness (there are no pre-set thicknesses) to somewhat thicker than you actually want, because once you tighten the screws the thickness is less than you expected. The final straw for me happened this week, when one of the thumb screws cracked and broke while tightening. Now it just spins uselessly and I cannot adjust the thickness any more. This piece of junk is headed for the scrap metal bin and I'm shopping for a new mandolin.

A family member decided to buy this for me for Christmas after hearing my old mandoline was getting worn out after 20 years of service. If I lived in the same city as my mother in law I'd probably try and return this, because I can't I'll probably be throwing this expensive, thoughtful, and useless Christmas present in the dumpster.

I don't imagine that anyone uses a mandoline because it's safer than a knife, but rather they want something much faster than a knife and they're willing to sacrifice safety for that. In trying to make this thing "safer" they've made it less convenient and slower than other mandolines I've used, and slower than a knife, at least for me.

I would MUCH rather cut everything by hand with a knife than use this mandoline.

I can't imagine an experienced person finding this product at all acceptable and I'm very suspect of the 5 star reviews.

The regular slicing blade is actually serrated and it leaves an unsightly ribbing effect (NOT THE RIBBED / WAFFLE CUT BLADE!) on everything firm, worse it practically pulps soft things like onions making them nearly unusable.

When you cut onions the poor onion is so damaged all juice leaks out everywhere making everything smell like onions and leaving the onion a mushy slop. That might be fine for soups but not things like salads.

I didn't purchase this here, but it's the same model, it was not purchased through Amazon but through Walmart.

After getting something that had been incorrectly described (they said I would get a ceramic coated blade) I instead got this thing which has a serrated straight blade, and have found that it is the most useless piece of junk I've ever spent my good money on. The straight blade is totally dull, trying to use the prongs and other parts, lifting things up you stab with the prongs (usually half are left and how do you deal with cabbage) is a total waste of time and energy, and you don't get anything nice after making a total mess of your kitchen. It also hurts your hand to try to put your fingers in the slots to "slice" (ha ha -that's a joke)

I bought it to slice cabbage (it is totally useless) and finally today thought I'd julienne carrots only to find that my carrots must be "too hard". As I have a nice and inexpensive Japanese mandolin which has held up for a number of years and does a beautiful job on all my vegetables, I am hoping to get a full refund as this was a very recent purchase.

I would advise you look a LOT further if you want a well designed kitchen tool for slicing and julienne.
