Swissmar Bamboo Magnetic Knife Block

Swissmar Bamboo Magnetic Knife BlockIf you live in a warm climate where you have to deal with the likes of ants and roaches in the kitchen, this is an excellent knife block. The lack of closed slots means there are no places for such insect pests and other nasty things to hide or accumulate. The plexiglas plates on either side combined with the relatively weak magnets embedded in the wood make it easy and convenient to put knives in and take them out, and of course make it easy to identify the knife you want. One would think having strong magnets would be better, and if it were not for the plexiglas plates it would be. However, I think the the combination of weaker magnets and the clear plates is a safer alternative for your knives.

There are two small drawbacks. This capacity of this block is about 7 or 8 knives, so if you have a lot of knives to use, this block may not be able to accommodate them all. It also will not take very long slicers or butchers knives and the like, so you may have to have alternate storage for these blades.

If you have settled on several, but not a whole host of knives that you use most of the time, this is a good looking, convenient and sanitary storage block that I recommend highly.

The block itself is decently made and has good weight and in all likelihood, live up to what it was designed to do. However, I have a couple rants about this product. First, the page listing says it can hold up to 9-in blades...well, it can, as long as you dont mind teh last inch sticking out of the block and the knife resting on its tip. In all fairness the magnets might hold the blade up a little thus relieving some of the pressure, but if it's advertised to hold a 9-in blade, then I would expect the hold blade to fit inside. My second issue is the magnets inside the block. Like other reviews have mentioned, the magnets are weak....superweak...almost like why are you even here weak. Any knocking of the block will cause the blades to come off. Even my lightest knife, a Global 7" Santoku has a hard time staying on the block. Luckily the plexiglass guard prevents any of the knives from actually falling out of the block, but never the less it is disturbing

Great display for a special knife collection. Much more stylish than the traditional boxy blocks. Discrete label is only displayed on one side, so make turn it towards the wall for a great looking kitchen worktop.

after just 1 month, the wood split. Good thing it had knives covering the split. Other than that, it's a great idea and shows off your knives nicely.

i like this a lot, its slim, compact and pretty versatile if you have a few knives or up to 7. they packing can be better. the first one i received had the top corners of the clear plastic cracked. the return was easy (thanks amazon), but i think there should be some protection for the corners to prevent unnecessary cracks.
