Boska Holland Monaco Collection Stainless Steel Cheese Slicer for Semi Hard and Hard CheeseI have been searching for years for a cheese slicer that rivals the ones I used while I lived in Sweden. Thank goodness I brought one back with me, but it has a wooden handle and is perhaps not quite as sharp as it used to be. You'd think a replacement would be easy to find in the land of plenty, but not so. I've bought several, even one from IKEA, but none of them came close.

I became excited about the Boska because of the positive reviews, but was soon disappointed. While it is definitely better than any other slicer I've bought in the US, it still doesn't quite make the cut, haha. Its best point is that it doesn't skip across the top of the Tillamook medium cheddar we love so much, as other blades have done. But the Boska doesn't cut smoothly, and that's the rub. It leaves a funky textured path in its wake, and it's also rather a hard pull compared to my trusty Swedish souvenir (actually made by Spar, a Norwegian company).

I compared the blades visually. I think the difference between great slicers and so-so ones is the angle of the cutting edge. Many make the mistake of trying to slice too much cheese at once; i.e., the cutting edge lies at too sharp an angle from the plane of the slicer. My older slicer cuts smooth, thin slices because its blade tilts ever so gently from the straight of the plane.

Which leaves me still searching. Thank goodness my old Spar still has some life left in it, and this Boska will certainly do the job, if inelegantly.

Perhaps this slicer would work better for softer cheeses, such as havarti. Haven't tried it on anything softer than the Tillamook cheddar mentioned above. Hope this helps.

This cheese slicer is so great and a good investment....previous slicers broke at the handle....this little gem is all steel and will last forever!!

I was originally put off from buying this slicer because I don't love the Boska logo on the blade of the slicer especially the little hole that they punched out where the "o" is. However, it does well in the dishwasher and is otherwise quite attractive, and it slices cheese very well. Best of all, I'm betting its handle won't split in the dishwasher the way my old wooden one did (granted, it was after 15 or 20 years of use...).

When we received this cheese slicer in the mail we were so impressed by the quality it sliced so well and seemed so well manufactured. Then, after a few weeks' use, two rust spots started to appear on either side of the handle. We had only ever used a mild detergent and warm water to wash no scrubbing with steel wool or anything like that. Now we dry immediately after washing to prevent the rust from getting worse, but it's still there. Very disappointed we viewed this as an investment, but wish now that we had never bought it. Try another brand!
