Sani-Safe 6" Vegetable/Produce knife, White Handle

Sani-Safe 6' Vegetable/Produce knife, White HandleIt sounds like hyperbole, but it isn't. I had one of these knives when I worked the produce counter at a grocery store many years ago, and I took it with me. I've been using it ever since. I purchased this one as a gift, and the receiver was thrilled. These knives can be resharpened over and over, they cut everything (think thin-sliced tomatoes), they're dishwasher safe, and they last forever. Get one. They're worth at least five times the price.

This knife disappointed me at first because it didn't work well for the application I had hoped, but it surprised me for other uses, such as slicing tomatoes as noted by other reviewers. So, I tried it to remove the rinds of cantaloupe and watermelon and was very happy. It is my first knife of this size that follows the curve of the fruit and allowed a close cut. And it still worked well for tomatoes. The squared end is another interesting feature.that has become useful for certain applications. I have several Dexter knives and like all of them.

The reason for four stars is because the handle of this knife can get uncomfortable after prolonged use on something tough. I also sometimes mix up the sharp and unsharp side.

Once upon a time, this Inspector picked up a girl at a grocery store. Not just any girl. The produce clerk. It wasn't love. We both knew that. But when two attractive people meet, hooking up is bound to happen. Ours was a casual affair. I still wasn't quite over my ex yet. She was actually keeping one eye open to hook her white whale. I was not going to rescue her from punching a time card for the rest of her life, and she knew it.

The fairy tale came true. She kept digging for gold, and eventually got somewhere. While plugging away in her produce aisle, she did manage to find a guy who would support her. Good for her. Not so good for him. But good for her. He's now moonlighting and is only home for a few hours at a time; just long enough to change his socks. She is still living the single life; and spending his money. Actually, we're still seeing each other. I come by whenever he is off at one of his many jobs.

Since she doesn't work anymore, and has no use for this knife, she gave it to me. Gosh forbid she might actually trim veggies at home and cook a meal for the husband that she is using for all he's worth. The back story is that when she first started working at the grocery store, the produce manager gave it to her. Some guys buy flowers for a girl. He bought her a knife. This was how that schmuck showed her how horny he was for her. A workplace sexual harassment claim got him transferred to the graveyard stock position at a store 35 miles from home.

Mine is an older model. My blade curves to a tip. Never really cared for. Dropped. Stepped on. run over by pallets on pallet jacks. Used more than once as a door stop. Pried open a couple of cans. And during several heated discussions, waived at me in a threatening manner. The hand guard is loose and wiggles.

High carbon steel. The blade came right back to life with a Chef'sChoice 15 Trizor XV EdgeSelect Electric Knife Sharpener. Sharp enough to shave with. Cuts paper with no effort. Cleanly slices every vegetable, including fibrous celery. Goes right through melon rinds. Dices carrots. It slices, it dices, but it doesn't make julienne. The handle is non-slip, and designed so that bacteria cannot collect and thrive (with regular, proper cleaning of course). The only thing that this knife really needs is a sheath.

If you juice or make a lot of salads this is the best knife for the money you can own. I have 3 other knives of the same brand that are more than 10 year old and they are my go to knives in the kitchen, always sharp and super easy to clean. Why is this knife special for vegetables, well the blade is a bit stiffer and the end of the knife has an angle so you can get a better cut on the carrot or vegie that you are working with. This is money well spent.
