This tool is fabulous! When I first got it I thought my parents got me another strange, but useful, kitchen gadget that I would use once in a a while... I use it all the time! It is sharp enough to cut veggies precisely and quickly, and dull enough to leave briefly on the counter without worrying about nicking your fingers (or the munchkins grabbing it by accident)! The scooping action is very efficient and cleans off the cutting board of all of the yuck from the previous veggie (even tomatos). Try it you'll like it... especially at this price! This is one of those handy little tools that has many uses. In practice, I use it mainly for scraping up dough that I've been rolling out, and for flattening things. The Bash and Chop by Progressive was formerly marketed under the name of The Galloping Gourmet, Graham Kerr. I seem to remember Mr. Kerr waxing enthusiastic about Progressive allowing him to help design this particular device, as it was his idea, originally. This is very similar to a dough scraper, with one significant difference: It has a side that can lie flat on the surface, such as the surface of a cutting or chopping board, which allows this particular device to be used to bash...garlic, for example or ginger. Garlic needs to be bashed for several reasons: 1st, for removing skins, and 2nd, beginning the chopping process, alongside ginger, which is treated in nearly the same way. The "-NChop" part of this product's name is more problematic...the edge provided is not sufficient for chopping any significant types or volume of vegetables, so, the cook or chef's knife would be the preferred method of finishing any chopping or slicing chore, however, the Bash -NChop reinserts itself into the food prep equation at the end of all the chopping, thusly: The perfectly chopped...garlic, ginger, etc. lies on the board, small piles of nearly microscopic cubes of flavor, waiting to be lovingly added to your culinary work of art, but your hands are inadequate to the task and the edge of your knife objects strongly to such a menial and dulling task. Bash -NChop, to the rescue! The same flat side that was created to bash allows the Bash -NChop to be used as a nearly perfect board scraper, picking up your finely diced nuggets of flavor and depositing them in your creation, just at the right time and the nearly sharpened edge allows you to get all the juices that might have been released, as well. Your Bash -NChop has one more use, to me. The quasi-sharpened edge is also marked with 1 inch incremental marks and as small as 1/8 inch marks are indicated and the marks are handy for measuring...anything you might need to measure. I was at a friends house making soup together. When she handed me this crazy thing I can honestly say I thought she was crazy! then i started to chop the veggies with this...omg i was amazed at how this cut! not only does it do a good job with veggies, but it cut cheese, butter, and tofu. I don't make a cake without this little scraper!Its very durable and if it gets in the dish washer it has no problems. I love that it has the measurements on the bottom (I use it to see how high my cake layers are). The main use for this tool (for me) is to smooth out my buttercream frosting. I can get that perfect smooth texture with sharp edges. Because of the way the handle curls its easy to hold and it has no "lip" to it so I can put it flat against the cake board to get a perfect 90 degree angle I need. If I'm using a butter based buttercream I can dip it in hot water (dry off) and it holds the heat long enough to "melt" the frosting into a smooth glass finish.
Anyone who makes cakes needs to have a tool like this!!
