Black & Decker EC475 Tall Can Opener, White

Black & Decker EC475 Tall Can Opener, WhiteI've had a similar Black and Decker can opener for years and ordered this updated version hoping for the same service. It was not to be. It did open the cans smoothly but the magnetic lid holder failed within the first week of use. Examining this part of the product you can easily see that it is made poorly and even a replacement is likely to fail quickly so I returned this product and will purchase another brand/model.

I am a long time customer of Amazon but never needed to return a product before. The good part of this experience is that I did learn that it is easy to return items and that they will even pay for the shipping.

Positive:

Doesn't drop the lid back into your food

Won't leave label shavings on your counter

Doesn't splash juice when opening can

Opens cleanly without metal shavings

Negative:

Knife sharpener doesn't work too well.

Everything said in the negative comments about this can opener is true. It doesn't cut well, it doesn't stay hooked onto the can, and some cans it won't open at all. It cuts the can in jagged little cuts which are dangerous and it NEVER completely opens the can. You have to hold the can in place to get it to keep cutting. If you take your hand off, the can falls to the counter and the contents splat all over because the magnet and hooking mechanism aren't strong enough to hold even a small can of tomato sauce. With some cans, I can't get it to cut into the can at all to get it started. Honestly, my last can opener was $9.99 from a discount store and it worked better than this can opener which cost double that amount. If you can't afford a nice one, buy a cheaper one and plan on replacing it more frequently but don't go for this slightly more expensive one. It is a poor product.

My wife bought a much cheaper can opener at a grocery store. With the "you get what you pay for" slogan in mind, we used that can opener about a week before it stopped gripping the edge of cans. No grip, no open.

I told her to toss it, and spend more money and get a good one. She said "What brand should I look for?" The first brand that came to mind was Black and Decker, so on her next trip to a department store, she picked up one of these. When she told me what she paid, I told her that I thought the price was a bit high, but if it lasted as long as our previous electric can opener (lasted a few years), it would be worth it.

Within an hour, we needed it, so I took a can, and put it under the cutter and pressed on the lever, and it started smooth, but stopped before going all the way around the can. I was shocked at the immediate defect. My opinion has only worsened over the month that has passed. The can opener now opens the can about half way before droping off the gear and stopping. I will not even do that if you don't hold the can.

Shame on B&D. I will no longer presume product quality with them, and will review even small appliances before a purchase.

I've been using an electric can opener since 1955 and I really like them, that Sunbeam lasted for 55 years, this one 1 1/2 years. Hard to use, often very difficult to get the cans positioned properly to get it to work, leaves bits of paper all over the counter, and failed completely after 1 1/2 years, it won't even hold a can anymore. Almost all small appliances are made in China now, and they are very poor quality, so many of the things like this don't even last out the warranty, but it costs more to send them in than to buy another one. Come on Black & Decker, give us some quality small appliances!
