My task was to chop one onion. I peeled the onion and halved it. With each half, it took nearly five or six hefty strokes to get through a rather small onion.
As for cleanup, there are too many cavities for the food to get lodged in. I have cleaned it several times by hand and once in the dishwasher (on the top rack, as instructed). Still, there are pieces and odors of onion in the chopper.
In addition, the blade I used to chop the onion was placed in the dishwasher for cleaning as well. After just one washing, the chopper blade shows visible rust.
I returned it for credit. This thing is awesome! I cut my vegetables into 1/4 to 1/2 inch long strips before using this, and it worked perfectly. I didn't try cutting into anything whole, but even with slicing them first I probably saved at least 15 minutes of cutting time. It also cleans very easy. The part that pushes down on the vegetables contains many "teeth" or ridges and grooves. After using it, parts of the vegetables are stuck in the grooves, and it appears like it would be hard to clean. Just pull out the "net" that fits in the grooves around the "teeth" and the food comes right out. I love it and would recommend it to anyone.

If you are going to chop bananas I'm sure it would do a fantastic job. If you are going to chop anything else, it would be much easier and faster to chop it by hand. We first bought a bonzai chopper when they first came out several years ago to see if using this product would be effective for making salsa. It is. This the best product we have found for making and canning salsa. We have worn our first one out and broke it this last year. I am glad I was able to find it again and just to be sure I purchased two. Love this product Bought this item at a CVS (sorry Amazon) and been using it for a year. The only thing it worked well for was celery and onions, which is fine; tomatoes squirt everywhere. It's really hard to clean, even though you can disassemble it with some effort. Ran the blade on the top rack of the dishwasher for the first time and it warped to the point it can't be used. It does require significant force to use and take appart so pretty much not wife friendly.
