I bought this knife and wanted to use it to carve up a roasted pig for a luau party I was having. The knife was a little under powered, it seemed to struggle when cutting larger slices. The pig was quite large (60 lbs) and after about 20 minutes of continuous use the knife became quite warm and stopped working. After a few choice explectives I handed it to my husband. Lucky for me my husband is a mechanical engineer who owns his own business which includes a metal working machine shop. Later that week he took it apart and discovered that there is a very fragile plastic Nylon gear that is part of the main drive. The plastic teeth on the gear were stripped and that is why the knife stopped working. He told me he did a few quick gear calculations (he is a smart fellow) and determined that the plastic nylon gear teeth strength was way underpowered for the design. He was able to make a duplicate gear out of stainless steel in his machine shop and assembled the new metal gear into the knife replacing the junk plastic one. Since that time the knife has worked flawless. I have since carved all sorts of roasts, pork, turkeys and no matter how long or hard the carving is, even if I hit a bone, it never stopped working. The Cuisinart engineers should be embarrased, this is such an easy fix to make (all they need to do is change out the Plastic nylon gear for a metal one, maybe cost them an extra 10 cents?), it is like they never did any research and developement on this product because I know if they tried to cut anything other then bread the dam knife would stop working after about 10 minutes of use. I would say that all the good reviews here are from people slicing bread, if you want to slice meat and use the knife for more then 10 minutes you will need to find an engineer and a machine shop to replace the plastic gear, after that it works great.Read Best Reviews of Cuisinart CEK-40 Electric Knife Here
I bought this knife in November after reading the reviews here. I feed my large breed dog a "raw meaty bone" diet and wanted a reliable knife to cut pork shoulders and other large pieces of meat. This knife exceeded my expectations. Worked so great on the Thanksgiving turkey (not for the dog), that I bought three more as Christmas gifts. It does make a peculiar burning smell for the first hour or so of use, and my wooden knife holder was thrown out after the third use. It rests in the drawer just fine with the other larger utensils.
I highly recommend this knife.First of all, this knife is underpowered. It bogs down easily and the blades feel reluctant to slice into anything. But there is also a fatal design flaw. The internal mechanism of this knife uses a stainless steel worm gear to drive a nylon circular gear which in turn drives the blades. The second time I used the knife (on Thanksgiving) the blades siezed up on a piece of turkey bone. The nylon gear ceased turning because of that but the worm gear continued to spin. I took it apart to see why the knife blades no longer moved even though the motor whirred away. Result? The nylon gear is stripped and the knife is irreparably dead. It isn't that hard to design a mechanism with a safety cutout to separate the gears if one stops rotating (or alternatively, to build both gears out of stainless steel) and given the fact that this is by far the most expensive electric knife there is, Cuisinart certainly should have been able to do so. A knife that disintegrates as soon as it hits something tough is worthless junk. This one cost me $25 per cut.
Chef's Choice M130 Professional Sharpening Stations
It put a good edge on my knives quickly and easily. I have a 10 inch wusthof that is my main kitchen knife. I put an edge on it with stage 1 over a month ago and it has remanined very sharp since. All you have to do is run it through stage 2 ( which is just like a steel) every once and a while and it maintains it's sharpness.
So far I am very satisfied. As a user of Chef's Choice model 110 and 120 for over ten years I had greatly anticipated the release of this new model.Unfortunately some poor design choices prevent me from fully recomending this product. The older M120 provided 3 stages and created a triple bevel edge. The new M130 can create at best two bevels and only one if you use the sharpening steel. The first stage creates a single edge that can then be steeled with the second stage. If the third polishing stage is used the steeled edge is ground away. That being said the number of bevels is secondary to sharpness of the blade. In comparing the sharpness of the two machines they are very similar with the new 130 seeming slightly sharper. The major issue with the machine is the need to have it out on the counter at all times. The whole point of a sharping steel is to hone your knives each time you use them in order to maintain an edge. This means you need to lug out the box every time you cook, or to have it out on the counter taking up space. If you are model 120 owner looking to the M130 as an upgrade you are much better off buying the Chef's Choice 470 SteelPro.That way you only need to have the larger machine out for major sharpening and can quickly grab the small steel for honing. You'll also notice the M470 has two steeling rods versus the M130's one rod.
I would like to add one note of warning to anyone new to the Chef's Choice line.If you have a collection of knives with heavy bolster heels, know that Chef's Choice models have problems with sharpening all the way to the base due to the heel not fitting into the sharpener. Most Japenese(Shun,Global,MAC, etc) knives aren't effected since the blade extends the full lenght of the knife. Many European(Wusthof,Henckels,Sabatier) knives have the heavy metal heel, and will over years of sharpening develop a gap as the metal from the blade is ground down and the bolster remains.meaning the base of the knife will no longer be flush with your cutting board from the heel extending below it.

When I bought my Henckels (not the el cheapo Henckels International, mind you) knives I was looking for a sharpening steel but ended up with the pull-through gadget they call a "sharpener". Someone's already pointed out the difference, that the device is a "honer" that merely sets the blade straight. It returns usability but doesn't actually SHARPEN, i.e, shave off metal and recreate the edge. After reality set in that I could keep running my knives in this honer until I was blue in the face and never increase the sharpness but merely prolong it, I decided to look for a way to really sharpen a knife.Local and mail-order services didn't appeal to me because I didn't want the knives out of my hands or tested on stuff I wouldn't cut in my kitchen. So I went looking for sharpeners I could use in the home.
As I read opinions, the whetstone seems to be the best possible way. The electrical sharpeners are about the only alternative that actually re-create an edge, so I thought if the best of them doesn't satisfy me I'll have to go with a whetstone. And I bought this machine.
As one reviewer pointed out on a slightly different model, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. If you think you'll simply get an edge by running the blades through the six grooves in order, you will be sorely disappointed.
The first and second pairs of grooves are for different knives and the third works with the first, maybe the second too. And that's not all.
You have to run the knife, test for a good burr on the new edge, and polish the edge straight to get your razor sharpness.
Don't forget to wash the knives, before and after the sharpening. You don't want food or moisture in the sharpener, or microscopic metal in your cut food.
Big question: is it razor sharp? Yes, but under some conditions. I tried this with five knives: Four Henckels five-star blades, and one some-other brand blade. On one Henckels santoku, I made do with a minimum burr and got a sharp blade, but it wasn't razor sharp. This will be done over. The other brand blade got a nice burr and everything, but never got razor sharp, though it was sharper than it had ever been. The three other Henckels knives, they are as close to razor sharp as anything.
What do I consider razor sharp? I ran an edge across a small part of my arm and it took off all the hair. THIS IS NOT SAFE I have shaved with a straight razor so I didn't cut myself. DON'T DO THIS, read on: I used the same blade to cut a slice off a vine ripened ripe tomato without using a chopping board, and established this test: The slice comes off with no skin left on the end of the slice where the knife finishes the cut. That is razor sharp. Vine-ripened, ripe tomatoes tend to have a skin that is almost like plastic wrap thin and very resilient to the sharpest blade.
None of my newly bought knives were able to pass the hand-held ripe tomato or hair-on-arm test when they were new. So the sharpness is better than the factory blade.
The second groove can put a microscopic serration on the edge for better cutting in some situations. Or sharpen a serrated edge. I haven't tried this yet, will update the review when I do. But I'm very happy with this product.
Criticism that won't take away a star: Reading the manual in this age of short-attention can be painful because the text is small and the lines too long. Paragraph breaks are scant. More pictures, narrower columns and some white space couldn't hurt, especially here where reading the manual is a requirement (not just an overload of warnings or obvious, unnecessary direction)
All this seems long and tedious the way I describe it, but once you've read the manual, you will have your knives sharp in minutes. So sharp you may be tempted to try to work on the factory edge of a newly bought knife. Just remember, it's important to start with a reasonably good quality knife whose metal can stand up to a fine edge.

I just finished sharpening the knives in my knife drawer with the M130. Some of the older knives took a while to get a burr in step one but once the burr showed up even my older dull knives were sharp again. My every day knives sharpened in less than a minute. My best knives sharpened in a few seconds. The middle position is not motorized. It is a quality sharpening steel like you use by hand but this position keeps the knife near the optimal angle so the steel works optimally. You don't turn the motor on to use the middle position so you can walk over to the sharpener and put a quick hone on your knives without using any electricity. This is the big difference between this model and the Chef's Choice M120. For the extra $10, I prefer the sharpening steel over having a second grinding wheel. The third position is a "polishing" wheel which is similar in effect to the old barber shop razor strap which smoothed and polishing the knife edge.
I like the 20 degree grind used by the Position 1 wheel and see no need for an additional wheel used to change the grind angle in the Trizor system used in the M120.
I have a wide range of quality in my knives and this system seems to work well on all of them. I don't have serrated edge knifes since a well steeled knife works as well for me. I won't spend hours using an oil stone to sharpen knives any more. Also at 55 years old I don't see as well as I once did and can't hold a consistent angle using the stone. This system gives you a consistent sharpening angle.
I sharpened 10 knives in less than 15 minutes with some them being quite dull. I thought about giving the M130 4 stars based on cost but it saved me so much time, the cost was worth it.
UPDATE: I've been using the M130 for two years now. I use it daily (sharpening steel plus polishing wheel) on my best kitchen knives (Calphalon Katana Series) and they remain super sharp under constant use for about a month before I do a touch up with a single pass under the grinding wheel. I don't hand sharpen any of my knives now.

For an electric sharpener, this one is nice. I've used it on five knives now, and all of them are sharp enough to slice a tomato without any pressure from me (just run the knife across the surface under its own weight). So I'm happy. I know that on reviews of the previous models some people complained that the sharpener didn't get their knives razor sharp. This one doesn't either. But it gets them plenty sharp enough for cooking! And much sharper than the knife vendor here in town does...The only serious negative is that I'm not very impressed with the manual. While it does give instructions on how to sharpen your knives, I didn't think it did a good job of explaining the different types of edges this sharpener can create.
10 pc Bamboo Utensil Assortment: 2 knives, 2 teaspoons, 6 spice spoons
I didn't really process the measurements in the description (my bad) and was a bit shocked and amused when I opened the box. The spice spoons came in just under 4" and hold about 1/2 tsp. The other spoons are 6.25 and hold one tsp of water. The butter knives are 7.5 and actually usable for that purpose.
I'll find a place for these little guys in my kitchen. I do like them and don't want to send them back. But just be very aware that you're getting 6 half tsp measuring spoons.
I'm giving them 5 stars for quality and not knocking off any stars for size. It was my fault. I should've broken out a ruler to really understand the size better.

Mikasa Flatware 18/10, Satin Loft 65 Piece Set
The real problem however is how delicate the silverware is in response to water. Even the included care instructions warn you that "While Mikasa stainless steel is dishwasher safe, we recommend stopping the cycle prior to drying and removing the knives; hand-drying the blades." Really? I might as well hand wash them! Which is what I now do since my first tries at a full dishwasher cycle left me with black and marred knife blades. Yet even with hand washing, you need to thoroughly dry the blades immediately to prevent marring. And it's not just the knives. Some of my spoons and forks are also showing black marks after five dishwasher runs. Keep some silverware polish handy.
There are other warnings in the care instructions as well:
"Do not allow flatware to soak...or remain unwashed."
"Dry immediately with a soft cloth to avoid spotting."
"Make sure stainless steel is completely dry before storing."
Excuse me, but I'm quite careful with my flatware. The problem here isn't me, it's Mikasa. If I wanted to go through this much trouble to keep my flatware looking good, I'd just go with actual silver and not stainless steel. No other flatware set I've had, including prior Mikasa sets, has required this much care.

Let us be clear, if you're going to take the time to cook in your kitchen, you know a few items must need cleaning afterwards, right? Some more than others. For all those people complaining about this tool not being able to withstand the rigors that a dishwasher can dish out, here's a novel idea straight from the confines of common sense. We've all seen the little, brightly-colored spray bottles in bins at grocery stores, mega-stores and such. Fill one with half and half water and bleach, have it within reach . . . that is, just at about ankle level below the sink your standing at, spray the item to be washed and sanitized to your satisfaction (be liberal if you choose to) and then rest assured you've done everything possible under the sun to have your tight little niche of the world as "restaurant-clean and safe" as any four or five star eatery closely managed by astute folks not wanting to lose their job because of some health department oversight on their part. It's not that we are too lazy to get there, it's just that it's been such a long day with bending and such. And the heat in the kitchen, oh my! Next topic, please!Besides the foregoing lesson, the thing works great as it should. It will pound meat all day long with the best of them and at a very reasonable price too. OXO rocks significantly!

I am yet another fan of OXO Good Grips products. The meat tenderizer is another good product. It is very ergonomic, and it's heavy/solid so that you don't have to pound as hard as you would with more lightweight tenderizers.I don't like the fact that you can't put it in the dishwasher, but really, scrub it with some anti-bacterial dish soap and you're all set. After shopping at several home product stores in search of a tenderizer, I came back to the OXO Good Grips because I found it the best, in spite of not being able to put it in the dishwasher.Bought this Oxo product based on its looks and reviews. Was I ever disappointed. A piece of junk! Top broke off the 2nd time used. Once it breaks, you can see the poor quality aluminum used in this product. Just another piece of Chinese junk in the garbage. I should have kept the warrenty for something like this. Will be buying a stainless commerical one now...
ChestnutPro-Cut
To cook chestnuts, I score(cut) them & microwave chestnuts on plate for about 1 1/2 minutes. THEN, I may roast them in a steel colander on grill for added flavor. I also will score and boil to remove shells, then blend with honey-nut creme cheese for a dip.
To score chestnuts, I've used: the 'Chestnutter' (not worth it), used the hybrid chestnut knife (slow), but most effectively used box cutters (but is a big SAFETY hazard).
I took a chance and in the mail today I got the 'Chestnut Pro-Cutter'. Works wonderfully and I can trust kitchen helpers with its safety. Great engineering hidden within a warm and natural wood handle. Thick blade, held in place by two expansion pins--so I can't imagine "bending" such a blade unless mistakingly trying to score dried-out "cured" chestnuts. So today I tried several platefuls of chestnuts (of various sizes) and cranked out the work fast and safely. Immediately ordered 2 more cutters for this coming fall's harvest!
I've always wanted to engineer such a cutter myself and had various designs drawn. But this kitchen item in its natural hardwood-tone not only looks good but works effectively and in my opinion is inexpensive. Happy chestnut-cooking everyone! It is very easy to use: Just position the nutter perpendicular over a chestnut and punch, a cut will be done. My palm got sore after 10 or so punches but it is still better than using knife to make cuts over the chestnuts. The major problem is that the blade of it could be bent and got stuck. I guessed it was because the nutter was not positioned at right angle when applied and the power of punches pushed the blade aside. Although one can ply the blade straight but I think this problem could be avoided if the blade is made of harder metal. After seeing the reviews of other chestnut cutters, it appeared this would be worth trying and must say the gamble paid off. A couple quick cuts with this device is safe and easy. Hope it holds up!This product works great. I searched for a cutter after I cut myself the old way a month ago. I had a delivery issue as USPS does not deliver to my building. I contacted the seller and they sent another cutter to my PO Box right after I notified them. The original shipment was returned to them in a few days. Great product and great customer service.

These shears came highly recommended by my favorite recipe blogger and I couldn't be happier with their performance. They replaced a pair of Henkel shears I've had for several years that I paid three times more for but just weren't that sharp, even the day I bought them. While you're supposed to be able to cut through chicken bones with most Chef Knives, I wouldn't dream of using my best knives on such as task as the nicks and dings on the blade that results, just aren't worth it . . .and the task is made so much easier with these. The soft, easy grip handle is very comfortable, though it's important to keep the hand in the grips from touching the chicken to avoid the handle becoming to slippery. The blades easily separate for cleaning and snap back together and have a closing pin on the handle to keep them closed for storage.
Aside from cutting chicken . . .they work great trimming artichokes as well. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Amway A101, E84, E-85, E-9225 Compatible Fit Replacement Water Filter
First the filtering surface area of the filter is about ½ of the real Amway filter. Also, the filter is good for 6 months where the Amway filter is good for a year. Last, there is no documentation or any paper indentifying who makes the filter, how does it compare to Amway's, and who assumes product liability. I was given the name of the company that makes it but there is nothing in the filter that identifies the manufacturer. For all you can tell, it could have been made in someone's garage in China.
In all, you pay ½ the price but you get what you pay for: ½ the time, ½ the filter surface area and no company willing to assume product liability.
Won't buy it again. This product is O.K. as a replacement but a bit smaller than an actual Amway brand filter.
I will probably spend the little more and buy an actual Amway softener next time.
The water tastes great though. I'm just not sure it takes out all the impurities Amway claims theirs does.
Not terribly dissapointed though. As I said...it's O.K.

Should have read the other reviews. I guess it is filtering, but I plan to replace it in about 6 months. Besides being smaller, there was no carbon looking water that usually comes out in the first couple of minutes. No carbon means not the same filtering to me. Common sense will tell youThe beep you get is to "remind" you to replace the filter not a true test of the filter efficiency.
It is the Max Time length specified before changing, not gallons filtered.
Replace the battery and you'll get another year of service, may or may not be efficient.
1250 or 1000 gallons is the test and an estimate usage in a year.
No Filtration Specs to compare gives me Warning.
May give you good tasting water but the reason I bought this filter is to FILTER OUT THE BAD STUFF!
doe's it do that ?
I guess my only option is to order one to read the specs & compare the ANSI/NSF Standards.
