Sharpener 12 inch Ceramic Sharpening Stick Wood Handle

Sharpener 12 inch Ceramic Sharpening Stick Wood HandleI actually used this to sharpen razor blades that I use in my scraper. I also gave my dad one for Christmas as a stocking stuffer.

The advertised size is 12", but this is very incorrect. Actual length of the exposed ceramic rod is 6.75" and the overall length is 11.25".

Rod is very functional and hones my knives to a razor edge, roughly equivalent to a 2200 grit stone in my estimation. As others have noted, angle is important, you need to learn how to use it.

At 6.75", it's not very convenient when sharpening a larger kitchen knife. It will work, but you have to go a lot slower and more carefully. I have a Smith's 9" Oval Ceramic Rod on order. At $10 with a big handle and longer length, it looks like it would be a lot better for a kitchen.

By the way, when your rod gets loaded up with metal filings and you need to clean it off, Barkeepers Friend on a scrub pad will get it mostly clean, or a "Super Metal/Rust Eraser" will do the job even better.

Despite the misleading description, it is a very functional product for the $6 price and I think it was a great deal. I'll probably be ordering another couple in the future to put into travel boxes.

Works great, and you can't beat the price. I had a diamond honing stone that, while rated at a fine grit, left a rough finish on my blade. I use this stick to finish my blade to a much finer end.

Most knife users/enthusiasts can attest that a knife steel/sharpening stick requires some learned skill, usually by trial and error. I use this more to hone my blades after a few passes through my diamond wheel electric sharpener. Then I finish with a leather strop, pretty standard procedure.

If you don't know what you're doing or don't find the appropriate angle, you can make a dull knife duller!
