Wallace Gold Plate Duchess 18/0 65-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 12

I was really super excited to order these for my parents. For the price and beauty, we thought it was a great deal! I ordered 5 sets for my parents since we have a large family and were super eager to receive these beautiful flatware and use them for our Thanksgiving dinner. Shipping was super fast! The design and detailing on the handles are exquisite. However, as we inspected each set, we discovered that some of the gold plating was scratched or peeling off completely leaving the inner metal (looks black) to show through. We were all very disappointed and didn't want to risk having the gold plating peel/chip off in the future so we decided to return them all. I really wished these would have worked out, especially with all the rave reviews and the beauty at first glimpse! Buy at your own risk.

I looked on-line for fine gold-plated flatware and found the Wallace "Grand Duchess" 24-K gold plated flatware set that I liked. Out of all the ad sites Amazon had the best price for this set and I ordered from them compared to about $270.00-$354.00 on other sites but on sale for $163.00 at Amazon. I received the set today. This set, although it is the same design as advertized does not mention on the box that it is the "Grand Duchess" 24-K gold set; claims to be "dishwasher safe" whereas the advertised 24-K gold set warns to "hand wash only"; does not look or feel like the high quality comparable gold set it portrays. Have I been deceived?! This is supposed to be the exact same set at a better sale price Wallace "Grand Duchess" 24-K gold plated 65-piece flatware. Is it? Please let me know.

Below is the response I received for the above review with regards to the Wallace "Grand Duchess" 24-karat gold-plated 65-piece flatware set which Amazon.com advertised at a sale price of $163.00 (reduced "51% from their $353.00 original Amazon price" they claim. Instead Amazon shipped to me a lower quality Wallace gold -plated stainless steel flatware set of similar design only. Not what I ordered or what they advertised. By the way Amazon has since removed their original advertisement and order form for this product. Here's Amazon's response:

What an exquisite product! Not only is the gold flatware beautiful, certainly enhancing any table setting, but the weight is heavy, the quality is evident and all for such a reasonable price. This is a great value. The expedited delivery and tracking service was a distinct plus. I don't often write reviews, but this product is so perfectly beautiful and very much what I was looking for, that I felt compelled to write a review! Thank you Amazon.

The flatware looked much better in person than in the photo on the web site a deeper gold shade. Finish quality is excellent. Although the information that came with the flatware indicated that it is machine washable, I would hand-wash it to be on the safe side. This flatware really dresses up a dining table for special occasions and holidays.

My new flatware is very very nice. I had purchased another set from a high end store and that product was poor in comparison to this one. I am inclined to purchase another set of Wallace flatware.

The product is of a good weight, the color is an excellent quality gold not a harsh gold.

I purchased this product even though there were a couple of negative reviews. To those reviews that stated the product was faulty, I can only surmise they had gotten a bad batch.

I am very happy with the purchase.
