OXO Good Grips Serrated Peeler, Black

I purchased this product because it was recommend on America's Test Kitchen. I didn't expect much, but I was wrong. The serrations do seem to improve the cutting ability of this blade.

I find that I reach for this peeler more frequently than I do my non-serrated peeler. It not only works well on tomatoes, but also on lemons, asparagus, sweet potatoes and butternut squash. I believe that this peeler could function well as the only peeler in a kitchen.

If you need a new peeler, try buying one of these before purchasing a standard peeler. I have been pleasantly surprised at how well this peeler works on both delicate and hard vegetables.

I like using this to peel kiwi fruit. It gives a nice clean peeling to the fruit. A regular paring knife will take too much of the skin hence too much of the flesh. But you must be careful with it, I once cut the tip of my pointer finger while peeling the kiwi fruit and it was quite painful. The serrated blades are very, very sharp. Another negative about this peeler is that the skin of the kiwi fruit got stuck on the teeth of the blades and I had to manually pluck out the skin. I think this slows down the rhythm and thus the efficiency of the peeler. My experience is that if you peel "slippery" fruit or vegetable like kiwi or tomato, you must be very careful that the fruit does not slip out of your hand when you use this peeler or you might risk injuring yourself just like I did. I usually cradle the fruit in paper towel to prevent from slippage and peel with extra caution.

This is one of those simple tools that one takes for granted until the realization comes that small changes make big differences. I'm just ordering my second one now, the first having served a long and honorable career. The addition of very fine serrations to the edges on this peeler greatly improves its performance with thin-skinned or juicy products like tomatoes, peaches, mangoes, kiwi, and the like. Practice with it until your peeling stroke begins with the slightest sideways slide...it only takes a little...and you can make fast work of an otherwise messy and tedious job. If, as one reviewer noted, you have trouble with peel sticking between the blades, try tapering your peeling stroke as it comes to an end. This will cause the peel to taper to a point and fall cleanly from the blade. It just takes a little practice.

If I had a bushel of fruit to peel, I'd still opt for a razor-sharp paring knife. But for normal household quantities, or if your skill with a small knife is not all it could be, this is a great addition to the kitchen gadget drawer.

I purchased four of these OXO Serrated peelers on the 4 for 3 promotion last Christmas. Initially they worked great and I loved then that is until this fall. This is when I started having difficulty with them. When I looked carefully at the blade, I could see that some the teeth of that make up the serrated edge were bent and and some had broken off. Once the peeler looses some of its teeth it is no longer effective. The bent teeth catch on the produce. When you press harder to get it going it bounces off the produce and into the hand holding the produce. Ouch! Plus, Where the teeth are broken off, the peel remains on the produce. My Oxo serrated peelers failed one by one and now, not even a year later, all have been thrown away.

I would recommend the Mario Batali serrated peeler instead. I have one of these that I have been using for several years and it is still intact and going strong. Though the Mario Batali doesn't peel the produce quite as well as the Oxo did when it was new...it has stood the test of time, which is very important to me. This pattern matches the flatware pattern I've been using for over 12 years now (my old set was from Macy's Cellar purchased in 1990 and is still going strong) -the names are different but the pieces are identical. Have been looking for ages for the perfect silverware, and I have found it in this set. Simple and timeless, but not devoid of style. Perfectly weighted solid in the hand but won't jump out of the bowl or off the plate and hit the floor. The smaller spoons are perfectly sized for cereal and the smaller forks are not puny (why is this such a rarity?). This means that all of the pieces in the set are usable, and won't just camp out in the drawer as the soup spoons and small forks in my current set do now. Also: since it is not listed in the description, I want to mention that they are made in Japan. Hard to find these days.

WMF makes very nice flatware. When we decided to upgrade, we checked some brick and mortar stores and found a style we liked (Nortica). I bought the service for 4 at Amazon because it was quite a bit cheaper than the local C&B. At the time, the supplier was Goodman's in Miami. The product was received and was exactly what was ordered. I would also say it was packed better than Amazon usually does.

I note that Amazon is now the supplier, and the price is some $40 more than I paid in Jan. 2012. If you don't mind spending more, hit that one-click button and your job is done. But if money is important, shop around.

On the positive side, we love the flatware and have purchased more.

We got these originally in 1996 for our wedding from Crate & Barrel. Since then we have lost some pieces. I tried to locate them through C&B but they discontinued them. Luckily these are the exact same item. Let me just say that having used these for 16+ years they have held up great. The only thing over time is minor scratches in them and the matte finish gives away to a more shiny surface. We never even realized this until we got these new ones and compared side to side.

These will give years and years of reliable service.

The spring on my shears broke after several years of use. After e-mailing customer service they said that I could send a picture of the broken shears, which I did. I was informed that a new pair would be on it's way. After a few days they arrived and I have been using them every since. The OXO Good Grips Spring-loaded Poultry Shears are the only ones I have found that stand up to hard use of cutting chicken with bones. They come apart very easily for through cleaning and ease of sharpening. Great product that the company stands behind. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that they DID break. I'm thinking there was a defect in the leaf spring.

I bought these "good quality" shears after my last old fashioned pair fell apart, after at least 15 years' use. Now, after just a couple of years, the spring on these spring-loaded shears has lost its ability to rebound, making cutting difficult.

We bought the "poultry shears" offered by our local big box store and the first time we used them to butterfly a turkey, SNAP! They broke. I decided to buy something quality for the next Thanksgiving (2012). These worked GREAT! I cut that turkey backbone out without any problems. These shears came highly recommended by my favorite recipe blogger and I couldn't be happier with their performance. They replaced a pair of Henkel shears I've had for several years that I paid three times more for but just weren't that sharp, even the day I bought them. While you're supposed to be able to cut through chicken bones with most Chef Knives, I wouldn't dream of using my best knives on such as task as the nicks and dings on the blade that results, just aren't worth it . . .and the task is made so much easier with these.

The soft, easy grip handle is very comfortable, though it's important to keep the hand in the grips from touching the chicken to avoid the handle becoming to slippery. The blades easily separate for cleaning and snap back together and have a closing pin on the handle to keep them closed for storage.

Aside from cutting chicken . . .they work great trimming artichokes as well. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Melange French Classic Premium Porcelain 40-Piece Place Setting, Ivory, Serving for 8

I ordered this setting right before Christmas and so far it's been a great everyday set. The design is simple but elegant, nice enough to use with dinner guests but not too fancy for everyday. We've put them in the dishwasher nearly everyday and in the microwave, too, without incident. They are sturdy, however not too heavy like some other dinnerware we've had.

There is a small protruding line on the bottom of the dinner and salad plates as another reviewer mentioned as a quality control issue. I don't believe this is a mistake, as other dishware has had this element, as well. The protruding line is a little over an inch long and very thin, and the result is that the plates do not rest evenly on top of one another in the cupboard. This is only noticeable when they are stacked on top of each other and does not create any issues whatsoever when they lay flat on the table during a meal.

The bowls are traditional 'soup' bowls so very wide and elegant looking. I think it's worth mentioning that they are not handy for cereal where I prefer a much higher bowl to keep the milk and cereal in. But I just use another set of bowls for this purpose. I think the bowls are much nicer looking for entertaining guests and they can double to put candy in or appetizers since they look quite nice.

Overall, I'd recommend these to a friend for the price and quality. They are similar to the Mikasa set but more affordable.

I was in need of new everyday dishes and was tired of expensive stoneware chipping and showing scrape marks from flatware, ultimately looking terrible on the table. I still wanted something microwavable, ovenproof, freezer and dishwasher safe though. I purchased the Melange French Classic 40 pc set at Amazon recently. Although they are porcelain, Amazon's sale price was great and far cheaper than stoneware too.

These dishes are absolutely great! They are a creamy white color, with subtle non circular shape and not as heavy as stoneware. I have used them in the freezer, microwave, oven and dishwasher with no problems. If you want to create a great table setting with creamy white color that looks very nice against any color tablecloth and/or napkins.

I am very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend these dishes.

We received the set and immediately noticed an interesting "rib" protruding from the bottom of all the plates. At first, we thought it was some innovative new way of keeping the plates from rubbing against each other while stacked. After about 12 hours, we finally determined that it was a manufacturing defect on all of the plates in the set. Clearly it's not supposed to be there. We repackaged everything and shipped back to Amazon. It's a shame if you could trust the quality, it would be a nice budget set of china. However, the poor quality control from the factory in China makes it not worth the risk of needing to repackage and ship back the 40 lb box. Who knows if your set will come off the same factory run as ours?

It sure uses allot of oil to get high enough to use the basket. I had been using an electric and that was the first thing that hit me. It took 2 bottles of oil compared to 1 for the electric. For the same amount of basket capacity. This is due to the deep space between the bottom of the basket and the bottom of the pot, not to mention the smaller and larger diameters. However, once you get past that minor complaint, it is a good pot. Mind you that you get what you pay for. It is not the heaviest gauge metal in the world. But it is just thick enough so that the pot does not feel cheap.

I love Amazon as they never ever disappoint! This is the Best Deep Fryer ever! Easy to clean up, especially the basket! Nice size! One pound batch of Shrimp for example. We use a Taylor Pro Kitchen Deep Fry Thermometer in conjunction with it for accurate temps. Now mind you we've had about every type of deep fryer their is over many yrs.. I'll just say we're a senior citizens, lol. We use a gas, stove, can't speak for electric. Should be the same though, maybe a little longer getting up to temp is all. Great pot for rice, boiling water, etc. Oh, handle doesn't get hot but we use a hot pad anyway. Uses 48 oz. of cooking oil. Durability, lifetime unless ran over by a dozer are something. $10 Thermometer, once in awhile maybe but it's made pretty solid as well.

It's sharp enough to do its job. It's cheap enough for me to afford. So no complaints.

Cooking every night, I use the heck out of my knives but I take really good care of them too. I prefer Japanese knives and I'm stunned at the performance of this knife and another from the same brand. The handles do not appear to be good quality but I must say that the look is deceiving because they are holding up well. The blades are amazing and it is a joy to use them on meats, fish, and veg. If you take care of your knives, are skilled at using them, and love to have quality tools in the kitchen, I recommend these knives over Shun and the other expensive brands any day. I purchased these knives to use as "junk knives" in case I needed to cut some foods that I thought may damage my expensive knives. I think I paid about $17 for this one and it's every bit as good as my Shun.

Shun Premier Slicing Knife, 9-1/2-Inch

This knife is very sharp, thin, and well balanced. It wasn't finished with quite the care of the 6" chef's knife I bought just before purchasing this one, in that the metal of the handle was slightly wider than the wood creating a tiny sharp edge at the boundaries. I took a diamond sharpening tool and a fine finish stone and about an hour's work to bring the metal edge down flush with the wood, until now it feels perfect. This tool makes slicing bread, roast beef, fish, etc. a real joy.

I own 3 Shun knifes, I use them frequently and have never had a blade chip or dent or do anything except provide excellent service. This leaves me to concluded that all these people complaining about chip blades are using their knifes improperly. Harder steel can hold a sharper edge and hold it longer but, the down side is that harder steel is more brittle. If you don't use, clean, and store these knifes correctly they will break. If your going to buy an expensive knife you owe it to yourself to learn how to care for it. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that will teach anyone the proper usage and care for their knifes.

Love Shun knives..probably the best I have ever owned. They slice through a melon like it was butter. They do need to be handled carefully...always cut on a block and don't bang them around in the sink when washing..the tips are fragile and I actually broke off the tip somehow. The knife could be repaired fortunately since it was just the very tip. Expensive..but well worth the price. I have owned several Shun knives for 2 or 3 years and they are just as sharp as the day I purchased them.

MAN LAW 5 Piece BBQ Wood Handle Tool Set -Kids

These are some man-size, heavy-duty grill tools. So big that I'm still trying to figure out how and where to store them. My husband liked them as his father's day gift. Contrary to my expectations, he thought the basting brush was useless and would have preferred a grill brush (grill cleaning brush). On the other hand, he was very satisfied with the tongs--he opined that locking tongs are for sissies and amateurs. Sigh. Men! Who can figure them out.

I was fairly disappointed by the dirty (dusty, gritty), shopworn (torn, crumpled, dented) product packaging. The tools were secured to their cardboard package with twist ties, and several of these were missing. I guessed that the package had been purchased before, not only because of the missing ties but because the package was taped together with packing tape.

To compound the problem, the outer amazon box had been poorly packed. The tools came in a far-too-big box with just a few folds of brown paper as cushioning. I have received other, much less expensive items from Amazon (health bars or face cream) packed quite securely with long loops of inflated bags as cushioning. It was weird to receive these heavy items sliding around in a big box. It made the box hard to handle and may have been at least part of the reason why the packaging looked so beat up. The tools themselves were not damaged. I wouldn't have cared quite as much if the purchase hadn't been intended as a gift. :-/

with my henckels cermax they just scream quality so loud you want to fall down and cry yourself to comfort. with this wusthof it's like meh whatever ! the quality of this knife is like a screwdriver you buy from home depot yeah it does the job, but nothing to get excited about.

its comfortable. it does a good job peeling apples. i use it every day. i have no complaints with it regarding functionality.

but bragging rights ? well it IS a cool knife but only because of the cool shape. the quality though is average and that is obvious to the naked eye. i have a 8" chef from the same Grand Prix II line of wusthof and it has the same uninspiring average quality. My henckels twin four star II Chef has double the quality ( in terms of fit and finish ) and also cuts better due to having a thinner blade than the Grand Prix II Chef. but ok this is not a Chef's knife but i was making a point about fit and finish on the whole line did i mention it is average at best? on the Henckels Twin Four Star it is good, but i felt the Twin Four Star II handle shape was wrong for a paring knife.

as for my Henckels Cermax well just wow they are so in your face awesome that i never use them at all. i just know in my heart i am not worthy so i don't touch them. to use a Cermax knife to make dinner is like using a Hasselblad camera as a hammer ( well, maybe not quite hehe ). besides, i don't think that line has a bird's beak paring knife anyway.

but yeah i hope you get my drift here. get this knife if you want to peel some apples. if you want to make a present to that special somebody get a Shun or something. a Shun will cost more, it will probably work the same, and probably end up chipping the blade eventually, but at least it will be eye candy unlike this uninspiring blob of polymer goo with a blade stuck in it LOL

I have a small hand and am fussy about how tools fit in my hand. But this is not a tiny, light weight paring knife. It has substance to it and always feels very secure and although I do peel with it, I probably do more chopping of onions and celery etc.

I purchased my first one in a store over ten years ago and while the first knife will probably outlast me, I like it so much that I wanted to have a back up just in case. I even returned to my previous state and store but they did not have the knife. A couple of years ago I checked Amazon and they didn't have it either. Fortunately it is now available, possibly hasn't been for long because I think I am writing the first review. I could just barely still see the model number on my original knife so although the picture looked like my original knife, I felt more sure that I would get a duplicate of my much loved knife. Square 16-Pc Set, Service for 4 (Simple Lines)

These plates are very durable. I had a set of plates that lasted all of one month before I got these. These plates are remarkable! The design is very contemporary, and overall very good looking. I wanted plates with some design to them which means no plain, white plates. But I didn't want floral designs, and a full color plate can sometimes be too bold. This design is perfect for me, and the quality of the plates are even better.

This is my second set of plates. I have dropped them, accidently hit them against the faucet, and they are still in one piece. I love them. The only part of this set I have to be careful about breaking is the cups, they are porcilin. Like my mother and grandmother's sets (which they have had for 20+ years), these are microwave and dishwasher safe.

This is bizzare. Amazon list this as "high quality" simple lines and is asking 50% more than the regular simple lines. I called Corelle and they told me there is no such thing as a "high quality" simple line. My advice. if your interested in this dishware buy the regular and save $25/set

Hampton Forge Silversmiths Lauzanne Mirror 45-Piece Flatware Set

I have to say that I am disappointed with this set. We have an original set from many years ago and they have clearly cheapened this product, which is probably why the place we originally bought it from no longer carries this product. It is not as heavy or sturdy I practically bent one of the pieces getting it out of the box. I am considering sending the whole thing back.... The price is right but the quality isn't there. If I didn't have anything to compare it to, then I would say the set is nice enough.

This set is okay. I really expected better quality. My first ever set of silverware was Hampton Forge and it was thick, heavy and lasted awhile. I needed more pieces but couldn't find that model. I bought this to replace the 53 Piece International Set I bought a few weeks ago, which was complete junk but this is almost the same quality. It's thin, it bends, and honestly, isn't worth $60 after shipping. For about 30 more dollars, I could've gotten a set that at least felt like quality.

But it's not an ugly set. It's just I know it'll have to be replaced again and at the rate I'm going, I'm using silverware like plastic spoons, forks, etc. Spend a little more and get something you won't have to replace all the time. I hope these last a little longer though and I at least get my $60 worth.

I own a set (8 place settings) of flatware (same maker and style) and wanted to add to it. This is the same style, but not at all the same quality(it is much lighter and the handles on spoons and forks are "hollow"). The price was good with my new Amazon card, but I would caution folks before buying.

I have had for about 1 month and think it is too early to tell if it will hold up.

Hampton Forge Lace 46-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 8

It is a bit tricky buying things on line at times. This flatware set is everything I wanted and more. The pattern is simple, yet lovely, and the weight of the pieces is perfect. They really feel like they should have cost a lot more than they did. The included tray is so nice, I threw away the one in my drawer and use it instead. I would certainly buy another set if I need more place settings in the future. They would also make a lovely "new home" gift.

I've had this product for 8 years.....still holding up great. Tines on forks as straight as ever, and no spots. Nice weight, excellent quality. I'm buying another to make sure I have them for a long time to come.

I bought this set of stainless tableware as a replacement for some rag-tag pieces I'd been using for years. It's heavy enough to feel substantial in your hands, looks good and has enough pieces to make it useful. I'm glad it's in my kitchen drawer!

We purchased this same set at Target in 2007. I loved the detail and weight of the silverware. However, when I got this new set to add to our collection, I found that they were lightweight, the detail wasn't as defined, and they rust easily. When I called the company with my concerns she informed me that they are cheaper quality now due to budget cuts. Very disappointing :(

I bought this set of silverware a couple years ago and it was awesome. It was made out of quality stainless steel, each utensil was thick and it NEVER rusted. I have since lost a few pieces so I ordered the same set because I loved my original one so much. The set I just received was NOT the same quality. They are a lot thinner than my old set, and they RUST really bad in the dishwasher. I am very disappointed in this set of silverware. :(
