It held up fabulously through the flight and customs. It even got lost on the way back to the US, and when i did get it back, everything was in place, nothing missing, all compartments closed. I've checked other chef cases before on airplanes (i was a private chef and did tons of traveling). This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.
This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 ½ inch paring knife and a 6 inch sandwich knife.
The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the Classic line, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 5 and 6 inch are a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.
As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick.
I have found very few uses for the 6 inch sandwich knife. I prefer the larger size of the chef's knife or the smaller 4 ½ inch utility knife. This knife is just the wrong width and length for most tasks.
This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife, the 4 ½ inch utility knife, and the 9 inch bread knife. Judge for yourself.Wusthof makes the best knife blades in the business, and in my opinion the best quality knives. Cheaper knives generally dull more quickly, and some never get truly sharp at all. Wusthof knives, in contrast, get clean, exact cuts every time, and are a joy to use.
The "Wusthof Classic" style of this set, with the three rivets attaching the black composite handle pieces to the full length tang of the blade, used to be the only style of handle Wusthof made. Wusthof now makes several other styles, including the slightly less expensive "Grand Prix" line with a molded handle, and the much more expensive "Culinar" line with stainless steel handles. If you have money to burn, you might want to look at the Culinar line, but for most people, the Wusthof Classic knives are likely the best tradeoff between money and quality.
The three knives in this set are the ideal knives for a brand new cook with no existing kitchen equipment. The chef's knife and the paring knife are needed in any well equipped kitchen; the "sandwich knife" is a compromise that can substitute, albeit imperfectly, for any of three or four other special purpose knives.
Amazon currently lists the Wusthof classic chef's knife in six different sizes; the 8" blade size is one of the sizes I own, and it works well for almost any cutting task in the kitchen. There are times when it feels like a larger size might work even better, such as when dealing with a large roast or turkey, but the 8" always seems to be sufficient in the end; there really aren't any times when I want a smaller chef's knife for general purpose use.
Paring for example, peeling potatoes is more of a special purpose task, for which a specialized knife is really superior. The 3.5" blade length in this set may seem short, but it's short for a reason. Often while one is using the paring knife in one hand, one is holding the object being cut in the other. The short blade length makes it easier to avoid stabbing oneself while maneuvering both the knife and the object.
The 6" knife is a little different. Unlike the other two knives in this set, the 6" knife is really only perfect for a very limited set of tasks. Its strength is that it can substitute, if a bit imperfectly, for a variety of other knives that may be missing from the kitchen of a brand new cook. For example, it can be used for utility tasks that require more than the 3.5" blade length of the paring knife which is to say, most utility tasks if the cook doesn't already have a 4" or 4.5" utility knife. It can also be used, in a pinch, when what the cook really wants is a second chef's knife for example, to cut fresh vegetables for a salad when it wouldn't be hygienic to reuse the big chef's knife that was just used on raw meat. The 6" knife won't be perfect for these tasks, but it will work, and will be much better than no knife at all.
As the new cook collects more knives, the 6" knife will likely be used less and less. It won't ever become completely unused I just used mine this evening, despite having half a dozen other Wusthof knives to choose from, because the 6" length is perfect for slicing a tenderloin roast but eventually it will become one of the lesser used pieces in the set.
That may make the 6" knife less than cost effective for a cook that already has an established set of kitchen tools. For such a cook, one of the other sets might be better perhaps the two piece "starter" set with the chef's knife and the paring knife, along with perhaps a Wusthof sharpening steel. For a brand new cook with no kitchen equipment, though, this three piece set is close to perfect, and it is the set I started my Wusthof collection with, 20 years ago.

I loved these knives right out of the box. They came sharp and feel great. I was finally moving out of the parent's house and needed some knives. With the free block and steel from Amazon you can't go wrong. I looked at all the sets for weeks and in the end decided that I would rather just buy what I needed, instead of settling for what came in the sets. I have found that I am rarely happy with prepackaged sets of anything. Therefore, this was a good starting point to which I added a bread knife and plan to add pieces if I need them (I doubt I will, but I may just fill the block :). I bought these sight unseen from Amazon and could not be happier.Update! June 2011 and still going strong! Daily use, occasional sharpening, wow.

I got so tired of dull knives, I took the plunge and got Wustof. I was surprised how often I use the paring knife. These knives are perfectly balanced, and made with the best construction. The blades are chromium/molybdenum steel, probably the best knife steel available.I trusted this tried and true brand, and it paid off. These knives stay sharp. They feel like a natural extension of the hand. They're beautifully finished. I was so excited to use them. I took 16 random poor quality knives to the church thrift shop. As it turns out, these three knives are all I need for cooking.
These are lifetime investments. I wish I hadn't have been so cheap for so long.

If I could, I'd give this product 10 stars, or even 20. I bought these knives for my boyfriend for his birthday, we are both in college and have recently gotten very involved in cooking. We did much research and found these to be the best cooking knives (we watch Food Network and virtually everyone uses these knives) and, we were definitely impressed. They are nothing short of amazing! They cut through everything like butter, it makes cooking such a breeze, they are easy to handle, and I've heard they last for forever, judging from everyones reviews on here. I only reccommend these knives, they are lifesavers and make cooking that much more enjoyable. I will never own any other knives other than Wusthof. Also, this set is a GREAT price for what you are getting! This particular model, the 8 inch bread knife, is a great knife. Many people think tomatoes are the hardest food items to clearly cut. I think bread is much more difficult; but this knife makes the task seem easy. My only quibble is the length. I find the 9 inch bread knife to be a better length for most loaves of bread.
I recommend the Wusthof 8" bread knife, but I would try out the 8 inch and the 9 inch to see which you prefer.You can only slice crunchy crusts with a serrated blade. So obviously this is your best bet for slicing bread. But, I use my Wusthof Bread knife for cutting frozen meats and it works great for that too.

A few months ago my wife and I bought a 3-knife set of Wusthof classic knifes and were really impressed by their performance. When we needed a new bread knife we decide to fork down the extra money and get a matching knife for our set. And we were blown away.First, the Wusthof quality and feel of this knife is great. It just feels right in your hand. I can't quire explain it in words, but I would say that it just 'feels right'.
Additionally, the knifes we had before were cheap off-brand knives. For this knife, you barely have to slide it across the bread and it just cuts through. No real effort needed. Even for breads that are a little more elastic, it just goes through (like a knife through butter :P).
The one negative I would give it is that it does not come with a sleeve for the knife, and that there is not really a matching sleeve for it. I bought this: Wusthof blade guard 8 carver and it fits relatively well (not a 100% fit since the bread knife has a slight curve to it).
Either way, I am a huge Wusthof fan and would recommend this highly.

Feb-2012: I was given a set of these 5 years ago as a wedding present. The knives cut very nicely. However, the handles have started cracking on all the black and metal knives. This is my first set of "quality" knives that I've actually picked out and bought on my own. I bought the set from a local department store. I did not intend to buy these knives, but I came across them while browsing for knife sets just to get some estimates, and I ended up with them in my cart. I hardly get a chance to cook and really just wanted a set for decoration and for special occasions. But, I found this set to be a great starter set. Right out of the box the knives were sharp and they feel pretty well balanced; they also have a pretty decent weight. A great compliment to Fiestaware! Good quality for the money; knives are not sharp enough to cut easily and the handles will take a little more room in the dishwasher and/or silverware rack. However, they are well-made and a fun addition to the table setting!I love Fiestaware, so I thought I would love this flatware. I bought 12 sets. Within 1 week one of my knives bottoms fell off. Super glued it back together. Within the next few months, a total of 27 pieces have broken or are totally bent. Usually what happens if the little circular clip where the metal meets the plastic falls off, then there is nothing left to keep the metal part from bending. I have talked to someone, they are going to replace these pieces for me, but it is just going to keep happening. I do have kids, who are probably rough with these but they are flatware they should be able to last longer than a year. While this butter dish is very pretty and looks almost indestructible, it has a serious design flaw. The inside dimensions are about 1/2" too small.Unless the cube of butter is in the exact center of the dish, the inside of the lid can touch the cube. As a result, when the dish is put into the refrigerator, the butter solidifies and "glues" itself to the inside of the lid making it hard to get the lid off later. Extremely annoying!
To add to the problem, the dish curves inward slightly on both ends, making even less room for the butter cube and more chance for contact with the lid. The plastic lid is over 1/4" thick which is part of the reason there is so little width room for the butter.
The dish is really quite beautiful. It just needs to have a little more room for the butter.
I should have heeded Mr. Kaufman's warning. He was right.I needed a new butter dish and based on the reviews that the beehive design made it easy to handle, I ordered one. When it arrived, I found that the bottom piece was designed with the outside edge sitting "too close to the ground" so it is hard to pick up. That plus the fact that it was rather pricey make me wish I had looked further and selected something different.

This Lexan Clear Acrylic butter dish is the next best thing to toast! After going through 3 glass butter dishes at roughly $5 a pop, so far this one appears indestructible. Taking care of my 86 year old father and trying to avoid accidents with broken glass I think this butter dish will do the trick.It looks just like glass while setting on the kitchen counter or the table. Your average 1¼" X 1¼" X 4½" stick of butter fits perfectly with ½" to spare on either side and a ¼" at the ends when placed in exact center. The base has a lip that the cover fits into snuggly but not tight enough to be picked up by it. Like all acrylic products, I recommend "hand washing" rather than the dishwasher. Ya never know. You just might end up with those tiny cracks left by the high heat and it would be a shame because this butter dish looks so nice.
I've been using this butter dish for a month now and it still looks the same when it was delivered. So far, knives haven't left any cut or scuff marks on the base.

This serrated knife is very sharp. The cutting guide is excellent for slicing bread evenly, meats, cheeses, even cutting fruit like tomatoes. The guide and adjustment knob make it take up more room in your drawer than usual, but this useful tool will more than replace the knives you have to store in other places.I bought this knife specifically to cut my fresh homemade bread. Got tired of the uneven slices of hand cutting it with a knife that squashes it anyway.This worked perfectly! Got the even slices I wanted, and no squashed bread.
We've also used it on other things, such as slicing ham, carving turkey....has worked wonderfully each time.
The dial to adjust the width of the slice is easy to use. Just be careful not to loosen too much or it just comes off. You can easily reattach it, but just beware so you don't lose the screw or something when doing it.

I've gotta tell ya I had my doubts about this knife. I have searched & tried so many products to slice bread that I had just about given up. I decided to give this knife a try...By far this is the best ever bread slicing knife. No smashing or tearing & the guide works wonders to keep your slices even.

I like to cook and at home we have Shun stainless steel, Sabatier carbon steel and Forschner/Victorinox stainless steel knives in the kitchen. I bought the Farberware 8" Chef's Knife and 3 1/2" Paring Knife to throw in my checked bags when I travel. I like to cook or eat in for breakfast and frequently dinner. I don't want to take my knife roll with Sabatier knives with me so after reading several reviews I ordered these. One thing I really liked was that they come with a plastic sheath / blade protector so I didn't have to buy those separately. The other thing I liked was the price of less than $20 for two forged kitchen knives.The knives are surprisingly attractive and well balanced with a nice heft and well fitted handles, rivets, and bolster. The blades show grind marks but that doesn't affect the functionality or the overall appearance. At this price I didn't really expect the company to polish the blades to a mirror finish. They were pretty sharp when they arrived but a few minutes on a water stone got them very sharp. I use the Paring Knife more than the Chef's Knife and it has held an edge pretty well on this trip with daily use. I don't have a steel with me so I can't re-align the edge after each use to keep it as sharp as I would at home.
I would highly recommend these knives for anyone looking for a basic set of decent quality kitchen knives but doesn't want to take out a second mortgage to get them. I also like the Forschner/Victorinox line of kitchen knives with the Fibrox handles for an inexpensive alternative to Shun, Wusthof, etc. They are stamped and are lighter but very good quality.Perfect balance, excellent handle, one-piece steel the length of the knife. A Joy to use! Very sharp, easy to clean.

Did not receive the "Pro" model, just the regular model and there was no sheath as advertised. The sticker on the back of the packaging had the correct item printed on it, but it was affixed to a different knife.I have several Farberware knives, and for mostly inexpensive knifes, they work just fine as long as you keep them sharp. I'm sure the knife I got would be ok, but I would prefer to have the knife I actually ordered.

This 6 piece set of steak knives are not only sharp knives but they are a great-looking set of knives. Light weight but very sturdy. Perfect length. My concern before I ordered them was how they would look on a casual table setting as well as a formal table setting. They look great on both. I've had many compliments on these knives. Another feature I like about them is they were made in the USA!These work perfectly and stay sharp a long time.This is the second set I have owned. I owned the first set for over 20 years and I am still using it.
The handles do change color over time. But in my opinion they look just fine with a slightly darker handle.

These Rada steak knives are made in the US. They didn't come ridiculously sharp by my standards, but they cut well and they're inexpensive. The handles are a little small, but overall these are pretty decent steak knives. The blades are thin and fairly sharp so they cut rather than tear at the meat. These knives are supper sharp. You need to watch your fingers. These knives will also scratch your dishes! I notice mine are suddenly scratched. Also, I probably would pick the black handled knives if I had to do over, so I could put them in the dishwasher. That was a mistake on my part of not thinking it through.All in all, they are the best knives around and the best priced by far. AND THEY ARE MADE IN THE USA!!!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Cool, I thought, when I saw this set of Wusthof knives coupled with kitchen shears in what looked to be an attractive storage block.Wusthof makes knives perfect for those of us that consider ourselves to be a little more talented in the kitchen than your average housewife. Their knives are not super high end, but they are certainly a major notch above many other brands at traditionally reasonable prices.
The cost of this set is about equal to that of what you would pay individually for the 6" Cook's Knife and the two different sized paring knives. Buying the set is like getting a bonus gift of shears plus a block into which all four utensils fit. Or so I thought..
My older Wusthof's Cook's Knife is a few years old. Compared to the one in this set, it is heavier and longer by an inch. No big deal there, I'm just contrasting the difference before stating I found the new knife to be of equal quality to my old. My issues are with the paring knives and the wood block.
The block that holds the set is pitted and looks unfinished on the left side. It is as if an entire step in the sanding process was missed. If that was all, I could just turn the set to face that one side to the wall. However, the face of the block is split along the grain with an especially big gap running from the top to the area between the Cook's Knife and the first paring knife.
What looked to be an attractive holder on-line is ugly and cheap looking in person. Even if it had been finished correctly and did not have the split in front, it would still not look worthy of the Wusthof label for no other reason than the mismatched knife holes. They are just big slots that are not specific to knife size leaving the paring knives plenty of room to slide around and lose what edge they have. Very disappointing.
Still, even though the block holder looks junky, the price is a good deal, right? Wrong. The shears are nothing special. If I was buying only shears I could get an equal quality pair for about $10.
Neither of the paring knives that came with the block (3" or the 4.5") match the quality my 3-5 year old Wusthof paring knife. Side by side, the handle of the 3" knife that came with the block looks a little smaller than mine and definitely weighs less.
Instead of this questionable set, I would recommend buying a Wusthof 7" Cook's knife and their 3" Paring Knife that they sell separately. Get a no-name set of shears only if you need really them. The need for shears is minimal; I cannot remember using mine at all in the last year.
What looked at first to be a good deal for a great set of knives in an attractive block turned out to be, in my opinion, a marketing tool to move inexpensive paring knives and shears. We are the kind of people who buy a knife here and there, now and then, and keep it until it doesn't work well any more. So you will not get from me the kind of high-end, fancy terminology review that would be done by a really into-it, professional or amateur cook.
The block we received looks just fine. No splits, unfinished sides, or other flaws. It is quite compact, with a small footprint on the counter. The slots in the holder are all uniform sizes, and not fitted to the various knives or shears. I don't know if that will harm the knives in any way. I don't plan to jostle them and would be careful in pulling them out and replacing them in any event.
The largest knife is somewhat on the small side for a chef's knife, with hollowed out grooves on the side. These are supposed to keep food from sticking to the blade, a problem we have had in the past with other knives. I'm not entirely sure the design of this knife completely eliminates the problem, but it does seem to help somewhat.
The utility knife is a nice step up or down from the other two knives. It comes in handy for slicing vegetables.
The paring knife is small and sharp. The shears operate smoothly and come apart for easy cleaning, which is important to me. I have an older pair of similar shears that do not come apart, and keeping them clean is much more work.
The set is light in weight, compared to some of our other, admittedly low end knives. This is not a problem for us. The knives feel balanced and comfortable in my hand. I might add that my husband, who has larger and somewhat arthritic hands, likes all these knives very much.
We cook at home almost every day, although we are by no means gourmet cooks. From what we have read on-line, this kind of knife is easier to maintain and easier to keep sharp than the more expensive, forged lines. That sounds good to us. For our level of skill and interest in cooking, this set is perfect.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This "Studio"-size set has three quite useful knives along with a fantastic pair of scissors in a compact and solidly made knife block. There are two versions of the Studio set, of which this, the "Gourmet" set, is the most affordable, and, for most folks, also presents the best value for your dollar. However, if you are very demanding when it comes to knives, you will probably want to pass this one up and buy the Classic set.Wüsthof is a premier cutlery company located in Solingen, Germany, and they make several different lines of knives, all of which are forged, except for those in the "Gourmet" line, which are stamped. It seems a bit counter-intuitive to call the budget products "Gourmet", because if you really are going to do a lot of cooking and want the best quality and longest lasting, you will appreciate or even demand the classic knives. But if they are out of your budget, you can still get some quality German knives with this set. They would be a good introductory set, and probably fine for many people who aren't "Gourmet" chefs, lol. I would guess that they are better than the knives most people have in their kitchen. The technology for making stamped knives has come a long way, and of course, the German Wüsthof company will give you the best that is available within that technology.
Qualities particular to this set, besides the much lower price tag include: they are lighter, they come to a very sharp point, and the blades are extremely sharp. This type of metal is extremely hard. As to the individual knives, the six inch chef's knife has hollow scallops along each side of the blade, which the Classic does not. These are supposed to reduce drag during cutting. The blades seem relatively more flexible. The small paring knife will come in handy for detail work. The middle size knife--a 4 1/2 inch utility knife will be good for cutting sandwiches, slicing and some chopping. The "big" knife--a six inch chef knife will be handy for most jobs, but it really isn't big enough to do all that a chef's knife should do--for instance, it would be difficult to chop up a cabbage head with it. I am used to my 8 inch Wüsthof for such jobs. Some people prefer an even bigger chef's knife, but as an average sized woman, the 8 is big enough for me. The plus side is that this more handy, but you might want to supplement it with a santoku type knife for variety and power. A serrated bread knife would also be useful.
I really like the come-apart scissors. They are the same ones that are in the "Classic" line.
In sum, this "Gourmet Studio Knife Set" fills a niche for people who want a compact set of nicely designed, sharp knives for budget price. I received this set as a Vine reviewer, and I will definitely use them, but I personally greatly prefer the heft and quality of the Wüsthof "Classic" line, and I am willing to spend the extra dollars to have a product that I can enjoy using for my lifetime. It's important to remember, though, that like most manufacturers they make knives at different price points, and that means some compromises in materials and build. To a professional chef, the knives they use are a primary tool relied heavily every day. They must be razor sharp, retain their edge and have a durability to withstand years of use. A home cooking enthusiast looks for the same qualities and takes pride in knowing they have the best tools available. A more casual user, especially one on a tighter budget might be looking for just a good sharp knife.There are two basic methods of manufacturing a knife. Stamped knives are cut from a large sheet of steel whether cut by a laser or punched out with brute force. Obviously this is the quickest method and allows a large cost savings to the manufacturer making the knives less expensive to purchase. The metal is often to some degree thinner and metal softer, meaning a lower carbon content. The metal part of the knife consists of the blade and a tail extension that is embedded or joined to a handle. The advantages of stamped knives are that they are less expensive, they are lighter, and keep a sharp edge but not nearly as long as the knives made by the more laborious and expensive forging process. This is the process used in making this Gourmet line of Wusthof.
Wusthof's most famous and traditional knives belong to the "Classic" line. Those knives are forged, that is formed from a single block of steel. They say there are 40 steps in their production. The steel has a higher carbon content making the metal harder and thus allowing it to retain its sharpness longer. Instead of having a "tail" extending from the blade that is joined to the handle, the metal handle extends the full length of the entire knife. A handle is added by "sandwiching" the blade handle between two exterior sides of the handle and then it is riveted in place with three rivets. The result is a blade that is heaver, a knife that feels much more substantial in the hand, retains its edge longer and has an obviously superior construction.
Which one is for you? It depends of your needs. I own a large Classic set and have owned them for years. While only a casual cook at home, I find these knives a complete joy to own and their effectiveness is superb. Preparation is expedited and cuts are precise. The Gourmet line offered here is a perfectly acceptably group of knives. In the short time I have them they seem very sharp and effective. I don't like the light feel in my hand and the construction, though to most would seem normal, by comparison is clearly a cheap alternative. But it is offered at about half the price. I imagine they will need to be sharpened more often which takes time and I don't enjoy doing. So consider the differences and see what meets your personal needs. Either way Wusthof is a superior knife in my experience and i recommend them highly.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I was thrilled to receive these knives from the Vine program. I already had a few Wusthof knives and love them. My prized Wusthof 6-inch chef's knife had recently been broken by a burglar using it in an attempt to pry open a locked case and I was glad to be able to replace it.This set would be ideal for someone just setting up a household, or just learning to cook or wanting a good set for a vacation home. It would cost quite a bit more to buy the items individually. A few points:
These knives are from Wusthof's "Gourmet" line of stamped knives. In the past, stamped knives were regarded as inferior to forged knives. Current engineering can produce stamped knives that are just as good as forged knives, and some claim they can be better. These knives are made from high quality steel and have a full tang (the part of the knife that extends into the handle) so the strength and stability of the blade is equal to any. These are lighter weight than the comparable forged knives but well balanced and the handle is classy and comfortable.
The largest knife is a 6" chef's knife. This is an excellent size for a starter or backup chef's knife unless your hand is very large indeed. In my experience, most people are uncomfortable using a larger knife, especially if they have no formal training in how to use a knife. This particular knife has granton-type hollows on the sides of the knife. These hollows make some cheeses and vegetables less likely to stick to the blade, which is a good thing.
The kitchen shears are very sharp and also come apart into two pieces for easy cleaning very important.
The utility knife appears to be exactly the same as a steak knife from Wusthof Gourmet 4-Piece Steak Knife Set which I also recommend. Just right, and a nice smooth edge, not serrated. A serrated edge can be useful, especially for tomatoes but is unnecessary if you keep your knife edges sharp.
The paring knife is small and flexible and is helpful for boning as well as paring.
The wooden knife block is attractive and uses up very little counter real estate, unlike some monsters that are full of unnecessary knives.
I'd recommend getting a ceramic sharpening 'steel' to maintain the knife edges.

The edge was sharp when I got it.Since it's high carbon it holds an edge.
It's also stainless steel which is a plus!
For a real high carbon stainless steel blade the price is very good. I love this blade, and I will be buying the set soon.
The only downside is that the handle and blade are 2 separate parts, but that's what you get for not paying $250 and up for a high carbon stainless steel blade.
I heard complaints about the 2 pieces. If you expect more, expect to pay more. It's a great knife and I will recommend it to anyone who wants a great knife at a low cost.

The last time i bought a bread knife, it was 5 bucks at some general store and it was so aggressively serrated and its edge so wide, that it tore up my cutting board and destroyed whatever i was slicing. I think i used it two times before i stopped using it. What a waste of 5 bucks! So for about three years, i used my global santoku for cutting bread (which, let's not lie to ourselves, actually works pretty well *once* you penetrate the crust). Where i was having problems, though, was with slicing up consistent slices of more fragile breads like brioche or really wide loaves of ciabatta that i was buying. For fresh sourdough loaves, a sharp chef's knife works pretty well, though.I still own a wasabi santoku that i bought in 2006 when i did a stint as a line cook. The knives aren't fancy, but i've definitely put mine through its paces and it's still my go-to knife even though i have much nicer ones at hand. This bread knife is no different in quality. It actually looks like with the Wasabi Black they really went upscale, so you have a bread knife with the aesthetic and engineering of a Shun proper, but with the nondescript stainless steel of those restaurant style bread knives.
In particular, the edge is sharp, but it's not wide, so you can actually get really accurate and thin slices of bread in once slice, if that's how you roll. I noticed other people here talking about using it for carving, which, now that i think about it, makes sense. The knife definitely handles like a slicer, but it's serrated *just enough* to grip bread, but not enough to saw away at whatever you're cutting, so you really have a sharp knife that's serrated enough to poke through really aggressive crusts. I haven't tried carving a bird with this knife, but i'm not surprised that others have had good results.
I had originally considered a more expensive bread knife, but now that seems criminal. I can imagine a more expensive knife would *look awesome* in some way i can't even imagine, but i can't imagine it performing any better than this one.Some breads have a very hard crust.You can use a bread knife with sharp pointed serrations.But if the inside of the loaf is soft and moist, this kind of knife will tear the bread.The Kai Wasabi black bread knife has sine-wave style teeth that are very sharp,thus it cuts beautifully no matter what texture or mix of textures your dealing with.This is the best one!!

I have a 20-year-old el-cheapo laser-cut bread knife that I have dreaded replacing, as it cuts the smoothest of any bread knife I've ever had. I have tried various replacement knives over the years, but all have had those huge serrations and mangled the bread more than cut it. However, I do believe I've finally found a reasonable replacement! This knife cuts fresh bread quite nicely, and doesn't leave a million crumbs all over the cutting board.It has a very unusual serration style which is a series of flowing curves instead of sharp points, and a plastic oval handle that is just rough enough so that it doesn't slip in your hands as you use it (a kind of rough velvet texture). My only concern is that if I ever have to have it sharpened, I will probably have to send it away, as the serration style is so unusual. Unlike my Shun knives, nothing came with the knife to say where I could get the knife resharpened if needed, so I would be at a loss. This concern is the reason I did not give 5 stars for the knife.
Even with that taken into account, for the price this is probably the best bread knife you'll find, so I recommend getting it.

Very large knife 14 1/2 " with handle. And a 9" blade. Extremely sharp. Cuts through crusty bread with no problem. Will handle any job you need a serrated knife to do. The Kai Wasabi bread knife is an absolute steal of a deal for the knife-obsessed foodie and less-nonsense person alike. They sent me a completely different scaler, and not a good one. Literally a waste of money. I threw the thing in the trash the first use because it is absolutely worthless.This is a simple but effective fish scaler. It is made of heavy aluminum body on a wooden handle. The edges are sharp and quickly scales salmon without problem. It does not have a built-in receptacle and so the scales tend to fly all over the kitchen counter. It was my prefered scaler until I bought Stainless Steel Fish Scaler 9-1/2". It is inexpensive and thus a great buy.
