Presto 08851 Dual Manual Knife Sharpener

Presto 08851 Dual Manual Knife SharpenerThe Presto 08851 put a sharp, uniform edge on a dull, mistreated 18 inch machete blade (1/16 inch thick). The sharpener had no visible signs of wear. I am sold.

I bought this on a whim, got it quickly and set out to sharpen all the knives in my house. It works great, is easy to use and now I'll need to be careful handling all that sharp cutlery!

I believe all this plastic is highly toxic for our environment and there is a lot of it in the packaging but I was sold because of the low price. In future will try do not support this anyway. The main reason for this decision was caused by watching a movie "Bag It".

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 7-Piece Knife Set with BlockThese knives could be worse, but given the fancy name and reputation, they could be a lot better, too. The blades are not as stiff as you might like. Flexy blades scare me not out of fear of breakage, but rather that they are harder to control and more likely to cut something you don't want cut. Also, the Chef's knife has a pretty shallow blade, and you can't do the cool chef-chop without rapping your knuckles on the cutting board. For the money, there are better (though less prestigious) knife sets out there.

I don't even feel these knives are worth the advertised price. I have used these for about 5 years and have been thoroughly unimpressed. I gave these one star because Henckels should be ashamed to put their name on these knives.

pros: They work (sort of), they are relatively cheap, and you get the Henckels name. I have washed mine in a dishwasher for 5 years and they still hold up.

cons: The steel is poor quality (doesn't hold an edge well), the fit and finish is poor, and the set is over priced for their underwhelming performance.

bottom line: You can get an equivalent set of knives for less money that performs better, you just won't have the Henckels name.

I sharpen these knives and they are dull within just a few uses. The stainless steel is soft and unimpressive. The honing steel needs to be used frequently with these knives to keep them cutting well.

I think most people will find much better performance from a high carbon stainless knife set from most other companies (like Chicago Cutlery's Forum line), you just have to put up with a little staining.

I have been slowly building a professional level knife collection. Start with a high quality chef's (or something like a santoku), bread/carving knife, and a paring knife and work up from there. I couldn't tell you how happy I have been moving to "real" knives, the difference is amazing. If you buy Henckels make sure to buy the ones with the 2 stick men as they are higher quality (non international). The Wusthof Classic set is also a good starting point for good knives. My current set contains an Al Mar paring knife, a Fallkniven chef's knife, and a Wusthof Classic Santoku along with all these Henckels that I am replacing.

If you want cheap but very functional knives, I would recommend Forschner knives. They aren't pretty, but they function as well as any of the good Henckel's or Wusthof's.

My experience with these knives lies between the two previous reviewers. While I will agree that this set features slightly lighter blades, it's a great starter kit for a competant cook in his or her home kitchen. If you work in a professional climate, you're going to want a heaver cooking knife -but at home they work very well. Nice and sharp out of the box, and let's face it, we all need to use the steel on the blade more often than we think. A great value, especially here at Amazon where the discount is nice and steep.

I have owned these knives for approx. 4 years, and I think they are great. I agree that the are thin and light weight, but unless you plan on hacking through bone often, this is an impressive little set. I use the 8" kitchen knife almost everyday, and it is still as sharp as the day I bought it. (I also use the honing tool every time I use it to keep it's edge). The two smaller knives couldn't be handier, from slicing 1" thick steaks into strips to slicing tomatoes into paper thin slices. I don't use the serrated bread knife too often, but it does the job like it is suppose to. The only bad thing I have seen about these knives so far is that the finish on the handles dull if you put them in the dishwasher, so hand washing is best. Going from being a kitchen manager at a 700+ plate a night restaurant and having a knife service, to a daily dinner cook at home, I am proud to say these knives will last me for years.

Want J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 7-Piece Knife Set with Block Discount?

My sweet son gave these to me, so I keep the ones which haven't fallen apart yet, but I have purchased a good set of Classic Wusthof knives.

Henckels 'International' line (Asian made) ARE genuine Henckels, but you only get the name and not the quality that most people expect from this brand; the 'Classic' line of Henkels knives are much better (but I prefer Wusthof Classic knives--German made). In all fairness, Wusthof has a bottom line, too--the 'Gourmet' line--don't buy it either.

1. All knives should be hand washed immediately after use, dried and put in a safe knife drawer or block; Never soak or put knives in a dishwasher. Wash with dishwashing liquid (no abrasives) and dry with a soft cloth.

2. Always use a cutting board and handle the knives properly to preserve their edges and tips.

3. Quality knives should be honed with a steel regularly--but only need sharpening infrequently. If you sharpen often, either your knives aren't high quality or you are inadvertently abusing them.

That being said:

A. My low-end Henkels' handles began to crack after about 2 months.

B. The rivets corroded and the tips bent.

C. They are not heavy enough for a serious cook.

D. They are sharp from the box, but are not able to hold an edge for long.

E. The bolster is part of the handle, not part of the metal of the blade and tang--annoying feel to it--not attractive.

F. Blade and tang are not forged, but stamped--not good.

I honestly don't know why respected cutlery companies make low-end knives. It can't be good for business--it only lessens their reputation.

Chroma Haiku Yakitori 4 1/4 inch Small Chef Knife

Chroma Haiku Yakitori 4 1/4 inch Small Chef KnifeI bought one of the paring knives and the little Deba knife just to see what the quality of the steel was like in them. I was quite impressed with what I received.

Out of the box both were quite sharp, after a little time on a good stone, hard Arkansas and a black finish stone, the knife holds an impressive edge and retains it fairly well through normal kitchen use.

Obviously the blade is stamped and ground to shape but the fit and finish of the blade and handle are very good and I find these little knives quite handy around the galley for most lite duty chores. Cutting veggies, slicing up stew meat and other lite duty work both knives are great.

I even disassembled a frying chicken as a test to see how they stood up, keep in mind I didn't chop bones but rather sliced through the joints and I split the breast with a larger knife as well, the knives did quite well working out of their league.

You can't go wrong for the price and you will find these a nice addition to your kitchen.

One thing you will need to do is get a good stone and learn to sharpen a knife properly to maintain the razor edge.

LamsonSharp 2" x 4" Turner

LamsonSharp 2' x 4' TurnerHow strange this turner gets much better reviews than it's big brother the 3x5 turner. They both have the same design, material, and construction; only a difference in size. Perhaps the larger one influences people to handle it harder, leading to durability issues and the smaller one, being used for more precise, delicate "dainty" chores gets a logically gentler treatment. Anyway...

I like mine just fine, it's great for small dishes cooked in my small skillet single eggs, little breakfast sausage patties, brownie server, and more (that's double speak for "I ran out of things that I can think of saying I use it for").

Right now it's priced the same as the bigger one ($13.99) which is not a good deal at all I got mine for $8.99. Check back when it goes on sale. It's a peach of a little turner.

I had about given up on finding a quality turner. All that's left in "kitchen" departments in stores are flappy silicone discs, and round plastic mini-sewer grates nailed to handles. You know the ones I mean. You couldn't get under an egg to save you with those.

The Lamson high-carbon stainless steel turners have a flexible but very strong blade. Tough enough for my kitchen-brute husband but fine enough to turn an omelette delicately. No rust, no crust, no more agitation!

If you make Indian dishes like Dosas or Chapatis or really anything flat and floppy on traditional cast-iron pans, you need this thing right now! So much less frustration now that I can properly flip things!

My aunt (who lives in India) had a similar turner for the past 25 years, still using it on a weekly basis with a broken handle because she was unable to find similar items in India! So the next time I visited I bought like 10 of these and gifted it to all my Indian relatives. They all now love me, and I now have requests to buy 7 more for their friends!

Then handle is built to last. And I can only hope it will give me 25 years of delicious and perfectly turned Dosas.

P.S. This thing is great as a scraper to get rid of stuck or burnt-on residue on cast-iron ware.

Wallace Continental Bead 18/0 78-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 12

Wallace Continental Bead 18/0 78-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 12I had been looking for this beaded design without any other ornamentation and was quite happy to finally find it. All pieces looked good and had a nice heft, but unfortunately, the edges were rough and, in some spots, even a bit sharp. Maybe my expectation exceeded the price point for this set. I settled on a similar, somewhat fancier set made by Wallace for Mikasa, but of much better quality.

I got this set for the 24 teaspoons. I have damaged more spoons in the garbage disposal so having extra is a real plus for me. To my delight it is also a very attractive set. I would say the weight was slightly less than heavy but should be fine with normal use. Considering all the pieces included the price was very good. Very happy with purchase.

I loved it online and was disappointed with the product in person. A few of the pieces arrived scratched and pitted. I later learned the lack of nickel would likely result in early rusting.

The soup spoons are gargantuan, which is nice, but the handles are so long they barely fit in my flatware drawer. Also, there are some rough edges on a few pieces where the casting of the metal was done pretty shoddily. I was surprised, considering this is Wallace. Overall, the flatware is pretty and functional, I just need a metal file!

Core Bamboo 2 Pack Bamboo Board Set, Solid

Core Bamboo 2 Pack Bamboo Board Set, SolidFound this 2 pack of Core brand cutting boards at Marshalls. But they are the same ones here.

Not very fond of them. Rough edges where you hold it. Also after just 1 use there are pieces of bamboo coming off constanly. Small little splinters though thankfully the bamboo is so soft it cannot hurt you. But still its getting on the food.

Love bamboo ... love Core Bamboo; so, it was hard to rate this item so low. I was thrilled to find this set at a brick & mortar store to replace old, plastic ones. But, would this thin set stand the test of time (like my large inch-thick cutting board)? I ignored my doubts & bought it. Should of heeded my gut/doubts ... the handle broke off in my hand when I picked it up to wash it after using it for the first time. It broke away cleanly where the strips meet; so, the strips weren't attached securely. Thankfully, I can return it. Hopefully, I will find thicker bamboo or teak cutting board(s).

I used one of these to chop up really spicy peppers the other night, and then several days later (after washing, of course) I was chopping up apples, and they got super spicy!! So, the board does absorb some of the juices. Wouldn't recommend using with meats at all.

Ginsu Kotta Series 2 Piece Japanese 420J2 Stainless Steel Kitchen Shear Set 4810

Ginsu Kotta Series 2 Piece Japanese 420J2 Stainless Steel Kitchen Shear Set 4810Cut very well but buttons popped off that cover the screw that holds them together first use.Not cool.

Maybe it's just my sets, but they don't cut very well. I have to use my right hand, if I use my left the blades won't maintain enough friction together to cut through bacon (seriously) let alone a chicken. Another note, the packaging is that sealed and rough plastic that you need to already own a good pair of scissors to open.

Wusthof Classic Ikon Santoku, Hollow Edge

Wusthof Classic Ikon 5-Inch Santoku Hollow Edge KnifeThis was the first "nice" knife I've bought, intending on getting an entire set over the next few months, and it is a winner.

Obviously the first thing you notice is the blade's sharpness (I almost sliced myself when I first picked it up). It will cut through pretty much anything with ease. I busted it out the night I first bought it and sliced some radishes paper thin with ease. In fact, the hardest part is avoiding your fingers. The santoku portion means foods you are cutting will slide off the knife because of the "air pockets" that the grooves create.

The next thing you'll start to notice is the balance of the blade itself. Even compared to other Wusthof knives, the Ikon is exceptionally more balanced and lighter in the hand.

Finally, on an aesthetic level, the African wood handle sold me. It's contoured so it fits your hand well, yet feels sturdy enough to last a lifetime. The lack of a huge "red" Wusthof symbol on the handle is nicer, in my opinion, than the more inexpensive Wusthofs.

My recommendation, save your money from buying inferior knives and buy this one instead. You won't regret it.

I thought hard about getting the asian style(global, shun) but I hear they're harder to sharpen than the German knives. This knife is more comfortable than the Wustof classic, with an ergonomic grip that's very natural to hold(my hands are slightly smaller than average), even if some think it looks weird. Compared with the classic, the Ikon feels better balanced, too. I didn't know much about this knife when I bought it, but it's a solidly built, comfortable, sharp and does a nice job keeping from sticking to food. Best knife I've ever used. Highly recommended.

Buy Wusthof Classic Ikon Santoku, Hollow Edge Now

I got The Wusthof Classic Ikon Santoku 5" knife after researching about the different tiers of models and their craftmanship. The Classic Ikon line I would consider Wusthof's middle-of-the pack line of knives. Before I did my research, I have already purchased a set of Gourmet line knives (entry level). Let me tell you, The quality between the two lines is like night and day.

The balance, quality and ergonomic on the Classic Ikon santoku is amazing. Very light weight and cuts up vegetables and boneless meats with ease. I am a lefty in a world of righties, so this fits well on either hand. This fact (along with pricing) is a reason why Shun knives with their cool Demascus blade out of the equation: because of their special "D" handles makes them -handed specific...but I digress.

I am an amateur when it comes to cutlery and cooking, but when friends and family come over and help prepare the meal, I always get the "woah!" expression when they use this knife. It also helps that I have my set on a magnetic rack on the wall to showcase them. My sister was so impressed that I instantly knew what to get her for Christmas.

Keep in mind that when you do need to sharpen this knife, to do it with an Asian knife sharpener. It has a sharper angle than other knives like the Chef's knife. I believe it's 15 degrees for Asian knives like the santoku versus 20 degrees on the others like the Chef's.

From an amateur's perspective, this is the best knife I have ever used (except for the all-mighty butter knife!).

My first Wustof. Definitely will get another Wustof. Sharpest knife I've ever owned or used. Cut myself on the thumb fairly deep the first time I used it. Blade so sharp, I didn't feel pain, only the slicing motion. (Pain came later, of course). If all Wustof blades are as sharp, then the prices they charge are worth it. Just be careful out there.

But this knife has surpassed all my expectations and continues to bless my life as I work around the kitchen. It is sharp and has maintained its edge. Wusthof Cordura Knife Roll

Wusthof 7372/8Cordura 8-Pocket Knife Carrying RollI am a line cook and have this bag for 3 months. I carry this bag to work w/ me everyday. And unfortunately..... First off its already falling apart. Seams are coming undone, things you would understand are normal wear and tear but you'd also expect it to last more than three months. Secondly; I've noticed this comment made, it doesn't come w/ a strap. Funny thing is it has a ring on each end of the bag for a strap to connect to? Third the quality isn't strong enough to withstand knives that are in fact sharp. The material itself is to fragile to place sharp knives into w/o having blade savers or a soft cover, which will dull the blade anyways.

This is a great bag though if you don't travel a lot w/ your knives. If your using this knife roll for storage than this would work fine, otherwise I'd recommend spending the extra money on something that will last.

good quality for the price... the only thing is, it does not come with the belt, which would make it easier to carry around.

7 days after purchasing the item, the zipper wouldn't close. Bought this for my husband for Christmas and it was exactly what he was looking for. He is a chef and tends to carry knives to and from work. This bag is large enough without being too bulky. It also has several compartments to store several knifes. Seems to be good quality, just like the Wusthof knives! Happy with this purchase.

Does not come with a strap, altho that was known before purchasing. What was not known, however, was that the stitching on the piece of nylon that holds the strap D-ring in place would come undone after a whopping two very mild uses. Not into the idea of refurbishing or repairing an item that's got all of 2 hours of use on it.

Knives are great... this particular roll, not so much.

Tobacco Pipe 3-in-1 Tool - Classic Wood & Stainless Steel - Tamper, Reamer & Pick

Stainless Steel Tobacco Pipe Reamer TamperI've had mine for years, and aside from nearly losing it several times, I have no complaints. The actual tamper can come unscrewed after years of pocket wear, but a drop of thread locker takes care of that. It's much better built than the typical "pipe tool," and is so much better than dirtying up your pocket knife or carrying around a 10-penny nail for the purpose.

This is a useful tool for a pipe smoker. It's exactly what I expected. I think you know what you're getting when you buy this product.

I actually received the same tamper, but with a natural wooden finish instead of stainless steel. This is a good pipe tamper with a tamp, reamer, and aerator. It's not too big and easily fits in your pocket.

What else is there to say? It tamps your tobacco well and can clean out your pipe when you're done. And the wooden finish looks rather fit as well.

I bought this single knife as a replacement for my knife block after one of my steak knives snapped (long story). The Wusthof brand is top of the line and this gourmet collection is their best product. The steel runs through the entire wood handle providing a nice, stiff blade that doesn't loosen or wiggle after years of use. I've never had to sharpen my knives. I've never had non-serrated knives that have stayed as sharp as these.

Keep in mind, though, like all nice knives, it's best not to dishwash them because water can collect around the handle and start rusting. If you're careful drying them after dishwashing, you're probably okay, but put them on the top rack so they don't get as innundated with water.

I've ordered a (block) set of these knives and additional knives over the last couple of years. I LOVE the chef's knife. It's my favorite one. All the knives are of excellent construction. We had the red sticker come off of one knife recently, but of the 20+ knives that we have from Wustof, that is not too bad--especially after two years of heavy use and my husband letting them sit in the sink (in water). I gave it four of five stars simply because of the price--if I could have given 4.5 stars, I would have because price is the only downside. It *IS* expensive. But it's a good knife, too.

Got this as a gift for my father-in-law & he absolutely loves it. He said it was a little big, but he agreed that the smaller ones would not have worked as well. He also uses it to cut up herbs & veggies that he puts on his pizzas. If you give this as a gift, make sure you open it 1st & inspect & clean it thoroughly. This one came with sticky residue on the blade as if it had a large sticker on it at one time. It also had some fingerprint smudges along the blade. So again, clean it & if you know how, use a whetstone & give it a little better edge. The edge it has is good enough, but I personally like knives (& cutters) to have an ultra sharp & durable edge.

Prepara Trio-Tri Blade Peeler

Prepara Trio-Tri Blade PeelerThis peeler is easy to use and peels very well. At first I thought it was going to be impossible to clean, because it came without any instructions at all, and the method for removing the blade cartridge from the handle is not instantly obvious. However, you can do this, and even remove the blades from the blade cartridge and wash them separately. Because there are three blades that can retract into the handle, the handle is big (about 5" circumference, which makes a diameter of about 1.5" I think). This is good when you are using it, and less good when you are storing it.

The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that cleaning is still a bit of a pain. If you are peeling anything juicy (even, for example, carrots) the juice can get into the handle and so forth, so you have to clean up the whole thing inside and out each time you use it. When opposed to a normal peeler where you just have to wash one blade and a simple handle, it is a bit of extra work. Of course if you're putting it in the dishwasher it probably doesn't matter, but I'm in an apartment and my discwasher isn't entirely reliable, so I'm washing it by hand.

BTW, in case you are interested, here is the method for removing the blade cartridge from the handle. It will be easier if I explain how you change blades first. To position a blade for use, you turn the bottom of the handle until the picture of the blade you want is directly below the slide button. Then you slide the button toward the tip of the peeler to expose the blade. To change blades, you push the slide button back toward the end of the handle, turn the handle two "thunks" until the next blade is in position, and then push up the slide button. To REMOVE the cartridge with all three blades in it, you stop at the "thunk" in between two of the blades, and then push the slide button an extra bit further toward the end of the handle. (The button won't go all the way to the bottom unless you are between the blades.) Then the cartridge pops right out. It's not rocket science, but it's not obvious right away. In this case a picture (or rather a diagram) really would be worth a lot of words.

This was a great and versatile peeler until it broke after only a few months of use. The plastic seems a bit shabby. It stained and didn't come clean in the top rack of the dishwasher. Went to use it one day and the part that inserts into the handle stopped connecting to the body of the utensil.

Prepara Trio-Tri Blade Peeler This is a great peeler!!! It is easy to use and having three blades in one makes it very convenient and saves space as well. I had to peel an avocado and it peeled it with no problem. I saw this product being reviewed on Cooks Illustrated.com, which gave it the highest review. The price is right and I have decided to buy it as Christmas presents for my daughters-in-law. Thanks for a great product.

Cutco Santoku Knife #1766

Cutco Santoku Knife #1766no experience actually using this knife, so I can't review that, but its likely of good quality as most cutco items are. But I can say that the actual price as of 9-28-2010 is $104, $14 shipping and tax on that less than what they are trying to rip you off for here!

I have several other Cutco Knives and I really like the way they feel in your hand so I decided to add this knife to my collection. I feel very comfortable cutting with this knife and it does a really great job. I also like the fact that they are dishwasher safe.

This is absolutely the best knife I have ever purchased. It is worth the cost. I have found my Cutco knives last forever. I had one knife get damaged. I send it back to Cutco, and they replaced it with a brand new knife. I will only buy Cutco knives. Cutco has a lifetime guarantee on their knives.

Wusthof 8845 Grand Prix II 7-Piece Block Set

Wusthof 8845 Grand Prix II 7-Piece Block SetMy wife and I both use these an absolutely love them. We were replacing a set of J.A. Henckels knives that we've had for probably 10 years.

We were happy with the knives being replaced, but they had riveted handle slabs that were beginning to come loose (one handle slab on our chef's knife eventually fell off, prompting us to seek replacements). Due to the failure of our other knives, we wanted knives with either integral handles (just the metal) or expoxied handles. Would have preferred the former, but the reviews and price for these were good enough that we decided to try them.

We did not expect such a tremendous difference between these and our old knives with respect to their sharpness. I don't know if our old knives were EVER this sharp (we routinely used the steel and occasionally a knife sharpener made for kitchen knives). With our old knives, my wife had started to buy NY strip roasts and filet roasts that were already trimmed because removing the silver skin, etc. was too difficult. These knives have totally changed that really cut through those materials very easily. I had resorted to using an electric knife to cut roasts, briskette, etc. but now use the chef's knife that came with this set slices through them with very little effort (and without tearing up the meat).

My only (perhaps unfounded) concern is that the epoxy used on the handles will eventually wear out, making me regret not holding out for integral handles. Nothing about the knives indicates that this will be the case, however.

I always figured good kitchen knives would be a little better-maybe hold their edge slightly better, sharpen up a tad bit more, etc, but these things really surprised the heck out of me. Its like cutting everything with a razor blade and a huge improvement over generic knives. You will see the difference. I freak out now if someone else uses them, and heaven forbid they put one in the sink!!!!

Jewelstik CN10 10-Inch Kitchen Diamond Knife Sharpener, Red

Jewelstik CN10 10-Inch Kitchen Diamond Knife Sharpener, RedThis is a great product!!! Highly recommend using it!!! It is designed for about 20 degree angle. However, if you adjust the knife a bit ( at about 15 degree), it will sharpen the knife really well!!!

I found this to be a good product at a reasonable price, it functions well and it shipped on time, job well done. This one appears to be more of a course grit than a medium grit when compared to the grit surfaces of my "JewelStik 1-2-3" sharpener
