I was replacing one with that feature and found it really handy. This is so pretty I didnt want to cut on it at first. Its much better made than the last one I had where the slats were tacked down with nails. That one lasted about 15 years, so i can't wait to see how long this one lasts. The carving of the slats looks really well done and it feels very sturdy. The knife also feels sturdy and good in my hand. Not too small or too large. overall, a great piece. i saw cheaper options but not with the knife storage as well. This was worth the price and I usually go for the low price.

Helps to keep the mess down when cutting english muffins and other messy breads. Easy to clean, Looks good enough to leave out on counter.

I am concerned about how long this product will last. Amazon replaced it with a new one because the first one fell apart. We picked this setting when we made our wedding registry 4 years ago. We picked it because:

1) none of the utensils had a "weird" shape

2) we liked the design

3) the butter knife had a thick enough blade to spread butter but still sharp enough to cut a decent steak

4) all the utensils had good balance in the hand

All 4 still true.

The only possible negative is that the knives will show rust spots if we use any lemony detergent in our dishwasher... so we don't use lemon scented detergent & no more spots.

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with Block

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with BlockI got this as a wedding gift, and I was amazed at how much of a difference it makes in the kitchen! Good knives make cooking such an enjoyable experience, and Wusthof is well-known to be one of the best out there. The 8-piece set is perfect for people who want to start with a good set and build up on it. Of course I use the chef's knife the most, but I also use the bread knife and paring knife a lot too. I think a santoku knife would be a nice addition to this set, and perhaps steak knives would be wonderful to fill in the 6 slots on the bottom of the block, but in terms of practicality, I never feel like I need more than what I already have (but this is coming from a person who is a beginner in the kitchen). I have been using my knives for about 1 1/2 years now, and the knives are still as sharp as they were when we first bought it. I'm sure we will have to sharpen them eventually, but with good care I expect these to last a very long time.

I'm no professional chef, but I've been doing a lot of cooking and learning about cooking the last few years. I started out with some Farberware knives. Those were just a waste of money. They inset the blade into the plastic handle and several times when I was cutting through vegetables the blade broke out of the handle and came flying up back at me. That's why you need a full tang, meaning the blade runs the entire length of the handle. The Farberware knives were not much more than sharpened sheet metal stuck in cheap plastic. I then moved up to a few Chicago Cutlery knives. They are no longer made in Chicago. And while they do cut good, they are still made out of a thick stamped out and sharpented sheet metal. Then I got a Caphalon set. That's when I finally got a good set. When you get a good balanced knife you'll know it. It feels like you could just chuck them across the room like a knife thrower. The Caphalon's have a great ergonomic handle are made of good steel and are well balanced. They are no sheet metal knife. I also like how they label the end of the knives so they are easy to find. The Caphalon's have the most ergonomic handle of any knife I've tried. They just conform to your hand. My complaint with them would be that I don't like the harsh cerrations on the steak knives. My drying towel catches up in them everytime I go to clean them. The Wusthof steak knives don't have the cerrations, making them easier to clean and making a nicer cut through the meat. I also think the Wusthof knives have two other advantages. The steel seems slightly better. And they are lighter. The blades are a little thinner than the Caphalon knives but that works to their advantage allowing for a lighter knife and for bending on the only the knives that need to bend a little. Wusthof just seems to put a little more thought into its design. I love the design of the kitchen shears. The are designed to easily come apart, making them much easier to clean. The Wusthof knives seem to be made better than the Henckel's, but both are good. And I like how the Wusthof design seems to be consistent. Henckel's has so many various designs of the same knife that I'd be scared if I went to buy a replacement knife if I lose a knife that I couldn't get that design any longer. I think with Wusthof, I could buy a knife 10 years later and it'd match perfectly with my Classic set.

My grades:

Farberware: F (don't waste your money)

Chicago Cutlery: C (good knives, but they are made out of a softer sheet metal type steel, they dull quickly)

Caphalon: B+ (great knives, if you want a great nice at a lower price these are great, I just hate the cerrations on the steak knives though)

Henckel's: A(not built quite as well as the Wusthof's and are not as ergonomic as Caphalon)

Wusthof: A (if the handle was a little more ergonomic I'd give it an A+)

The knife block itself has room for many other knives, and 6 steak knives. The knives themselves are extremely well made. The black handles with metal rivets are definitely a classic/elegant look, and the knives are incredibly sharp. Heavy and sturdy, these knives also hold their edge very well. My favorite knife is the 6" utility knife, because it's not too big, it can be used by men and woman alike (the 8" chef's knife may be a bit big for smaller women), and it's thin enough to get into smaller areas. The smaller 2 knives are greater for vegetable prep.

Definitely don't put these in the dishwasher. And make sure if you buy steakknives, to put them in EDGE UP... as the edge will wear down if you keep sliding the edge along the wood by putting them in edge down.

I already threw all my other knives out. Very happy!

Worth the price.... I use every knife in this set at least once a week. Just make sure not to clean your knives with the scrubby side of a sponge. I made that mistake and now have fine scratch lines on the blades.

They got a really weird smell after I oiled them but it went away after a few washes, I should mention I have a very sensitive nose so the smell probably wasnt that bad. They have splintered/pilled a little but that may be a characteristic of bamboo, not sure cause these are the first i have owned.

One good thing, the fibers seem to swell after washing so shallow cut marks seem to heal themselves

Fifth Avenue Portico Butterdish and Two KnivesThe butter dish arrived today, and I was so surprised to see the quality of it. It does not appear to have any "bubbles" and the cuts in the crystal just glimmered in the sun. This is a very heavy butter dish and should not skid around on the tablecloth when in use. It's also large(long)enough to hold about a cube and a half of our standard butter cubes, so, for large groups, it will not have to be replenished too readily. I'm really thrilled.

I purchased 2 of these covered butter dishes w/butter knives, received them yesterday. I am a bit disappointed; real Portico crystal is made in Poland & is lovely. These are cheap knockoffs made in China; given the same name, maybe to confuse the consumer?? The top wobbles, it does not sit flatly on the dish, & it is carved on the inside. The inside of a cut glass butter dish should be cut on the outside, leaving the inside smooth for cleaning. Will have to find out how much it will cost to ship back, if too much I will either "gift" them or sell them at a garage sale & save myself the headache.

Cuisinart BDH-2 Blade and Disc Holder

Cuisinart BDH-2 Blade and Disc HolderThis is a handy addition to the food processor. If you have one of these, I am sure you might have discovered as I did just how sharp the blades are. I nicked myself more than once trying to grab my blade out of the bowl where I kept all of the attachements for this. This stores all of the basic disks and dough attachment as well as the chopping blade. There is room for one more disk in addition to what comes with the set. This making keeping your blades and disks in a handy place. My only complaint is the latch that keeps it shut, is a little aggrivating. You must twist the latch by pulling it out, and not just to the side. I couldn't think of a better way to keep everything together!

This product works well in storing your blades and other parts, but good luck getting them out of there! Once the top closes, it locks shut, preventing your items from jumping out? In order to unlock the lid you have to pull this teeny tiny knob and then turn it WHILE you are pulling. The problem here is that there is no grip on this knob, and if you are in the kitchen, half the time your hands are soaking wet or greasy, so with no grip on this knob, you can run into some trouble. To alleviate this problem, I've replaced the knob with one similar to that of pin ball shooter, it has a convex shape with a knob at one end, giving you better leverage when opening the lid.

There is just one last thing I will say about this too, BE CAREFUL WHEN PICKING IT UP. Don't put your hand through the bottom like I did and slice open your finger!!! There is no base to the base of this product, meaning when you pick it up from the bottom, all the blades are protruding from beneath it!

I'm giving this thing 2 stars, one for doing it's job of storing things, and one for the price. The other three missing stars are for the horrible design flaws in this item.

I am disappointed in several aspects of this item. The first is that the cutting accessories for the DLC-5 Cuisinart do not fit in the box, despite being shown as an accessory for this processor on Amazon. Additionally, it is quite large and bulky, requiring more space than the food processor itself!

Most importantly, I specifically purchased this item after reading reviews about how sharp the Cuisinart cutting blades are and how great the Blade and Disc Holder is for keeping the blades away from children. This is *not* a child-proofing device. The entire bottom of the "box" is open. While the cutting edges are protected when the holder is locked and sitting on a counter or table top, you can easily cut your fingers by picking up the holder and sticking your hand inside through free access on the bottom side.

I like being organized as well as the next person, but based on the other reviews warning that this holder does not fit the blades for all Cuisinart models, you might consider doing what I have done for the last 20 years. I bought a small, rectangular plastic basket for about a dollar, and simply store my discs and blades in that. The discs sit vertically in the basket, and it's easy to pluck out the one I need. Simple and inexpensive solution!

Oster 74206.02 Cocinando 10-Quart Covered Caldera, OrangeI am enjoying using this caldera, I love the color and the non-stick surface! I also like the fact that the lid has a small steam release in it, so that I don't have to leave the lid at an angle to release steam. My only complaints were 1; it would be easier to use if there was a handle with a protective grabbing surface. I am constantly stirring my ingredients and saute' items in this pot before adding more, it's a pain to have to use a pot holder with this. That was no surprise, though, the item's photo clearly shows that the handles are uncovered and small. The surprise that I *did* get was the label. It took me hours to remove it! Even with oil based remover I had to treat it, then tear off a small piece, then treat it then tear off a small piece. It was a sticky/laminated mess! A simple paper label would have been much easier to remove (or a gummy-backed inside-the-pot paper with information on it). A silly complaint, in some ways, but a big time-waster to me.

The pot and lid, though, have been great and I love the color! I am going back to look for a slightly larger size now, I like to make enough food so that my husband can take the leftovers to work with him for a day or two and this isn't quite large enough for that + the family's meal.

item arrived slightly damaged, but I had already disposed of the packing. Slight damage should not effect use. Good price for the pot.

DMT VEE DiamondVee Pull-Through Countertop Knife SharpenerI ordered the Diamond Vee sharpener to replace one I've had for years and years. The old one worked fine, just getting a bit shop worn and had a nick in it. Since the old one was such a great sharpener, I suspected the new one would be as well. Surprise, surprise! The new Diamond Vee is worthless. I think it may have actually dulled the blade. I tried to slice a tomato after sharpening a knife with the new Diamond Vee and it wouldn't nick the skin! I ran it over the old one a couple of strokes and it sliced the tomato like it was water! I think I will drop this baby in the trash where it belongs! Glad I didn't throw the old one out. I may keep it forever!

I received a new knife that had a badly rolled edge on it. Rather than sending it back I decided to get one of these and re-profile the edge myself. This was a hard steel alloy (S30V) so I knew it would take some effort. By the time I got the edge back to the proper angle, the diamond abrasive surface was completely worn away. I got one sharpening out of it for 30+ dollars. I think the sharpener will work well for soft 440 stainless knives like you have in your kitchen or your swiss army knife for quite a few uses, but forget about it for quality knife steel. The adhesive they use to bond the diamond dust to the rods is not strong enough.

I have a few DMT products and they are all great, except for this one ! This thing does not work as advertised at all. Using a regular sharpener is much better. My chef's knife was much duller after I used it. I had to go back to regular DMT sharpeners to get it to cut well again.

We have had our Diamond Vee sharpener for about 15 years now, use it regularly and it still works great. Unlike a lot of electric sharpeners, it does not chew up the blades, just adds a fine super-sharp edge to them. The sharpening rods are in the perfect angle to get a great edge every time. It is also very safe the hand guard protects you while sharpening. One of the most useful kitchen tools I own.

I learned about sharpening knives commercial fishing. It's impossible to fillet salmon and halibut with a dull knife. I learned to use big oil bath and water stones, which give the best results of all. But for ease of use around the kitchen on knives up to 9", a V sharpener is easiest to use and gives quite satisfactory results. Of those, the DiamondVee is my favorite it's hard enough for good stainless knives, lasts at least five years with moderate use, and while it takes a little practice, it's something a rookie can master in short order. I still use a big water stone for larger knives as this just isn't big enough to work the tip, but for everything else this is my choice.

I just wish the title were more accurate so I would be surprised when I got it. The case is too tight for the knife. I am not sure if I will use it. I tried a couple of times, I saw it cut the middle part of the case.

I like Pure Komachi serrated knife better, but they do not have one for meat either.

I guess I am only disappointed because it is not what I expected. It is still a good tomato knife.

I love this knife! It's well balanced, comfortable to handle and it cuts smoothly and evenly. It does a fabulous job of sweeping through double-textured foods with hard exteriors and delicate interiors. With the late summer's bounty of fresh tomatoes from our garden, this is the pefect tool to slice the skin without bruising the fruit. The cheerful red color makes it easy to find in the drawer and the cover keeps it safe, so I'm not cutting myself on a daily basis.

Not very fond of them. Rough edges where you hold it. Also after just 1 use there are pieces of bamboo coming off constanly. Small little splinters though thankfully the bamboo is so soft it cannot hurt you. But still its getting on the food.

Love bamboo ... love Core Bamboo; so, it was hard to rate this item so low. I was thrilled to find this set at a brick & mortar store to replace old, plastic ones. But, would this thin set stand the test of time (like my large inch-thick cutting board)? I ignored my doubts & bought it. Should of heeded my gut/doubts ... the handle broke off in my hand when I picked it up to wash it after using it for the first time. It broke away cleanly where the strips meet; so, the strips weren't attached securely. Thankfully, I can return it. Hopefully, I will find thicker bamboo or teak cutting board(s).

I used one of these to chop up really spicy peppers the other night, and then several days later (after washing, of course) I was chopping up apples, and they got super spicy!! So, the board does absorb some of the juices. Wouldn't recommend using with meats at all.

Sunbeam 25-Piece Cook's Tool Set, BlackMy husband and I purchased this set when we first were married, (8 years ago) and I can tell you right now I loathed the caddy. The tools were all very cheap and within a year we had thrown every single piece away due to breaking (and also due to hating the way they felt to hold). The pizza cutter is a joke, you'd be better off using a knife. Please don't waste your money. Even for a poor college couple these were inferior.

This was a last minute purchase while buying kitchen supplies for a new home on a limited budget. And I should have spent more money. While most of the utensils serve their basic functions, the lesser pieces fail. Miserably. The vegetable peeler failed me on carrots. And when I say it failed, I mean it failed in a shocking manner. The thin gauge metal turned it into a dangerous item to hold. The spatula is in no way heat resistant. The others lack rigidity, or just plain feel cheap.

The high point of this set was that it shows that you cannot judge by packaging or pictures. It also serves as a lesson, or a reminder that you get what you pay for. And it's is also a good reason to upgrade as soon as possible.

8' Chinese Cleaver with Wood HandleCleaver is in between a big heavy cleaver and a thin slicing cleaver. I once had a Japanese slicing cleaver that was light and thin and nimble. This looked like it in the pic but when it arrived it was somewhat thicker and heavier. Though it is stout, it is fairly thin and easy to wield. It arrived very sharp. It appears to be nicely made. It feels good in the hand and handles tasks with authority. It works well on the cutting board. It can take on tasks like slicing vegetables, chopping up assorted foods, mincing, and cutting. It's sharp enough for thin slicing and heavy enough to go through tougher thicker slices quickly and easily. I think you could use it to cut up a chicken, dice up some onions, and slice tomatoes. It's a clean, balanced, sharp all-around kitchen knife, and the cleaver blade makes it nice for scooping up cut-up vegetables etc. It's a much better chef's cleaver than the stuff hanging off the racks in the chain stores like walmart etc. It has a well-crafted authentic feel in how it was manufactured, and that is satisfying.

The title says it best. I use it as an all around kitchen tool. This is my second Chinese Cleaver
