I love this set. The chrome is super deluxe. The carousel is interesting and european looking. Except for the can opener (Mine is not smoothly operating due to a burr on the grinding wheel), all the other 5 pieces in the set are highest quality and a dream to use. I probably should have given only 4 stars because of the opener, but I just love it anyway. Think I can get get rid of that burr with a metal file. (tip: As for a manual can-opener, nothing can ever beat a Swing-Away.)

Kikuichi Cutlery Elite Warikomi Damascus Tsuchime Santoku Knife 7-in.This is an amazing knife; it is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. I almost feel guilty using it in my kitchen, except that it does the job so well. Be warned, this is a fine steel product that requires careful handling -it is extremely sharp and light, so you have to pay attention to be sure you're not cutting something other than the food. It also needs to be cared for -washed by hand and thoroughly dried before putting it away. I don't find that a hardship, anymore than I'd mind caring for one of the beautiful fighting blades made for centuries by this company.

Having pursued the perfect kitchen knife all my adult life my quest has ended. A pleasure to look at. A delight to use.

Having used this knife now for a few months I'd like to say that it cleans up easily even when left over the weekend. Sharpening is a delight as you just swipe one side on the stone. Smacking garlic with the back side of the blade does the trick to finish off skinning.

If your a professional just do it and get the big knife. But for home cutlery, this is the best there is.

One last thing. Slicing and cutting are one thing. But a knife does more. It picks up food that has been cut and transfers it to the cooking surface. Magic is in your hands when your do this task.

I am forbidden to cook my own food. Buddhist sutra! So I will come back, and do more work! I readily accept....Michael

I have this case filled all the way up and I have issues closing it. The zipper would bulge and it would not zip right. I also had an issue with one of the teeth on the zipper getting out of place and it would not zip right. I called Messermeister they did replace the case. I will end up replacing it soon though.

I may be at fault for putting them in the dishwasher. The heat o the dishwasher must have weakened the plastic, making the flatware brittle. If you avoid using a dishwasher, you may be able to enjoy this flatware set for a longer time than I did. The set looks nice enough, but who wants to buy cheap flatware you can't even put in the dishwasher?

This was purchased after I had bought and used the Ergo zester. I was impressed with the quality and the lovely soft pastel color (green). The ergonomic handle enables me to have a good solid grip. It is perfect and feels so comfortable in my hand. I have arthritis and this paring knife made paring and slicing an apple and pear so easy. As usual when I get a new tool I go to town using it. It very smoothly sliced through a carrot. It is a good sized paring knife and well balanced. The blade is very sharp and I like the sleek look and over all design. The quality is very good. They look and feel sturdy and I feel they will last. The handle does not feel like cheap plastic! I wanted items made in USA these are not; but, I feel they have been made with quality in mind unlike other products that are lacking that are made in China. I have since purchased a few more tools from Ergo and I am enjoying using them in my little kitchen. I had down sized and got rid of so many gadgets. Kuhn Rikon 4-Inch Nonstick Colori Paring Knife, Set of 3I now own 6 of these little marvels. They are very easy to hold and make fast work of whatever food item you are cutting. I tend to use them for everything, leaving my expensive Henkel's knives in the block. I truly like the fact they have covers, which has saved my fingers numerous times when grabbing them out of the drawer.

Yes that nice looking "+" symbol on the blade would have you thinking these are made in Switzerland with pride and quality craftsmanship, but think again. These are made in China. I purchased these about 5 years ago at a Williams Sonoma store thinking the same as probably 98% of the other buyers on here rating them so highly, they were made in Switzerland. WRONG.

Make the same knife and put the Chinese flag on the blade and see how many you sell and how many stars people rate them as.

Anyway, in reviewing the knives and not the integrity of Kuhn Rikon, they are okay. After 5 years of careful, trained, adult use the blades requires sharpening about once a month with use of 3-5 times weekly. The blades are painted, and the paint chips/flakes off which being made in China wonder how much lead is in this paint, like the toys they try to poison our children with?

The handles are the best part, but you don't buy a knife for the handle.

Look around they are MANY other options for quality knives made by the Swiss or Germans, and worth the money. These, are sadly not.

I picked up this set because I wanted have an extra paring knife (most-used knife in the kitchen) and bring one to work to cut up an apple now and then. These knives are very pretty and different. They are coated in a colorful, slick material that matches a plastic handle and sheath. This makes the food more or less slide off the blade and the knife edge itself is very nicely sharp.

The sheaths mean that you can drop one of these paring knives into a drawer when you are finished with them--and not worry about running into an open blade as you rummage in a drawer. I normally keep ALL my knives in a block on the counter, but when you buy more knives than you have space for in the block, that's an issue.

For picnics, travel, storing in a work drawer, these are superb and they cut very well. The set of three is handy--one for work, one for the picnic basket and one for the utensil drawer at home. Or keep them in various drawers all over your kitchen so there is always a good paring knife at hand. If you are not superstitious about a gift of knives ("cuts" the friendship) then these make a really excellent gift for anyone.

We love these knifes. We cannot get enough of these knives. We used to have 2, and when we lost one guard and one knife, we decided to go for the 3-pack to replace them. These knives are just awesome; they're sharp, the perfect size, dishwasher safe, and come with matching guards. Our "good" knives haven't left their guards in a year. So much for that investment.

Miyabi Kaizen 9 1/2-Inch Chef's Knife

Miyabi Kaizen 9 1/2-Inch Chef's KnifeIMHO a great knife must balance well in your hand above all else, then have a blade that can take, hold and renew a good edge. If the balance is wrong, the blade will suffer as you manipulate it. A good balance in your hand means fewer trips to the steel and to my local pro sharpener. Stretched, my hand is exactly nine inches from thumbnail to the end of my pinky, and as a man of regular height and modest strength, the balance was perfect for me. Way better than the Forschner, F.Dick, Global, and Shun 10" knives in my collection. It has a smaller, rounder but longer handle than most, perhaps the source of the balance. The angle to the tip makes it better for slicing into product rather than rocking back on it (more like a Sabatier than an F.Dick or a Henckles). The blade was as sharp out of the box as anything I have ever bought, and my local pro is certified to keep it that way. I particularly like the finish of the top of the blade, which is rounded rather than squared off, since I keep my thumb and forefinger on the blade itself. I can just imagine the callous at the base of my forefinger dissolving into nothing! Miyabi has a bunch of other models out there, and the blades all seem terrific. But the balance on them varies. If you order one, run through a bag of carrots before you decide if it feels right. If not, send it back and try another.

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Cook's Knife

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Cook's KnifeBest 10" chef on the market: the Classic line has good handle weight and nice heft, and the scales are medium enough for small/med sized man hands to use with confidence. I find the Grand Prix to be a bit on the big side in the handle dept. Where this knife is a winner is: blade profile, steel characteristics, and edge grind.

If you compare this to, say, a Henckles 10" Chef, you'll notice that the Wusthof has a deeper, rounder 'belly.'This roundness enables the knife to rock back and forth (is that 'roll' back and forth?) for dicing with *much* greater ease than the Henckles, which tends to fall to the board and need to be picked up again, again, again.

The Wusthof steel, I think, has a touch more carbon than the Henckles, and a little less Chromium. It takes a second to touch up effort that is rewarded by superior cutting performance, with a higher edge grind. That said it is not fragile.

The Wosthof blade is slightly hollow ground, whereas the Henckles is slightly convex, which causes the Henckles to 'split' more than 'slice' hard vegetables like carrots and radishes. I've been using a 10" on and off since 1989. . . and I love it.

There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.

The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.

This particular model, the 10 inch cook's (or chef's) knife, is a good knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the Classic line, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. This knife, the 10 inch, is a bit big for most jobs. The 5 and 6 inch are a bit small for bigger jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), the 8 inch is the knife I would recommend.

Therefore, if you are buying your first cook's knife, I would recommend the 8 inch size. This is a great knife, but I don't think the size is right for mainstream users.

Yes, the price of a Wusthof Classic is intimidating, and yes, you will feel buyer's remorse...until you use it for the first time. Even for the casual cook, the difference between a Wusthof and even a middlin' fair brand must be experienced to be appreciated. I bought one for my father (who never gets excited about ANY present, ever) for Christmas; and he hasn't stopped thanking me yet. That in itself made it well worth the price.

Review: Wusthof Classic 10" Chef Knife {4 ½ out of 5 stars}

I think I've had my knife for about 12 years now, and I use it almost every day. In my case, the 10-inch size was the optimal fit for me, and it's easily the best chef knife I've ever owned. It's sturdy, ergonomic, well balanced, takes a good edge, and is very attractive ... but it does have a few minor quirks.

The Good:

* CURVE: The gentle progressive curvature of the forward half of this blade works better for me than certain other knives I've used (some of them not curved enough, and others too curved). For the uninitiated, the curve is there so that people who've learned the proper cutting stroke can use the knife in a nice smooth fluid action ... similar to the horizontal elliptical motion your foot follows on an elliptical trainer (hence its name).

* STRENGTH: This is a sturdy blade, with a full length tang, medium spine, and a full bolster that gives the blade ample strength, and it's high-carbon surgical steel gives it a good balance of hardness, stain resistance, and sharpenability. Jam it into a large butternut squash or a wax-hardened bowling-ball-sized turnip, and throw your weight on it, or bang away on the spine with a rubber mallet, and it'll get the job done ... it'll flex and vibrate, but it won't shatter. Sharpen it, and it'll take a fine edge, and sustain it for a decent length of time, even with heavy use.

* SHARPENING: I've used some blades that are so thick that they split harder vegetables rather than slicing them, and leave wedge-crumpled top edges on delicate items. Picture using an axe blade to dice potatoes and slice fish fillets and you'll get an idea what I mean about thinness/taper. This blade offers a decent cross-sectional diameter and taper that allows it to take a good edge and cut a good spectrum of items with ease, without sacrificing too much strength by being overly thin, or too much precision by being overly thick ... it's not perfect, but it's definitely very good. {Incidentally, I use a pair of large sharpening ceramic stones made by "Global", in both medium and fine grain}.

* HANDLE: People are funny about handles, and opinions vary wildly, depending on people's hand size, hand strength, cutting motion, aesthetic sense, etc. I happen to like the classic handle ... it's not so round that it impairs your sense (and control) of the blade's vertical direction, and it's not so flat that it's uncomfortable to grip. It's strong, stainproof, oil-proof, impact-resistant, not-too-slippery, and doesn't harbor bacteria-friendly gouges. For me, it works.

Minor Nits:

THICKNESS/RIGIDITY: Knife makers strive to achieve a good balance between strength & control (read: rigidity) and flexibility & finesse (read: thinness), and different people's preferences tend to fall slightly to one side or the other on that balance point. In my case (and this may seem a tad picayune to some), this blade leans very slightly too far towards the former. IMHO, I think that if this blade were, say, a quarter or a half millimeter thinner, it would be that much closer to perfection ... as is, it's ever so slightly too rigid, and it sometimes tends to split/crumple the top edges when julienning largeish and optimally fresh (read: crisp) carrots and zucchini. It's close ... definitely well above average, but not quite perfect (for me anyway).

FULL BOLSTER: Love 'em or hate 'em, but bolsters do have a valid purpose ... they (as the term suggests) bolster the blade's vertical strength. Gothic cathedrals used flying buttresses to similar effect (albeit in the opposite direction), so they could build taller. However, bolsters also have their drawbacks heavy regular users and professional chefs will usually bring their blades to a professional knife sharpener and have them grind down the edge-ward end of the bolster in order to permit the blade to be sharpened evenly, along it's full length. Why ? Over time, and with heavy regular use and repeated sharpening (especially if you prefer a really wicked-sharp extra-steep edge), a blade slowly gets narrower and narrower with wear ... the edge slowly creeping closer and closer towards the spine, like an incoming tide. If you're a really heavy user, you can expect to lose up to several millimeters per year. The next time you're in a well-established sushi bar, take a close look at the most frequently used knives by the hardest working chefs, and you'll occasionally see blades that have lost half or more of their original width (heck, I've seen henckel 10" slicers worn down so far they look like deboning knives, with the logo spilling off the edge). Anyway, if the bolster extends all the way to the edge, it eventually begins to get in the way of regular wear, tear & regular re-sharpening, so that unless you grind it back (to stay ahead of the recession of the edge), it'll begin to jut out, and the cutting edge will no longer sit flush against your cutting surface or sharpening stone ... kind of like trying to ice skate with a lump on the heel of your blade, or riding a motorcycle with the kickstand down. In any case, that's one of the easiest ways to tell an amateur from a pro is whether or not they've ever had to grind down their bolster.

Despite these 2 minor nits, I can highly recommend this knife ... 4 ½ (our of 5) stars.

Have you ever noticed that once stuff wanders into your kitchen it is hard to get rid of it: that old set of dishes, cutlery from college, gadgets that have long since outlived their usefulness? I still had some old serrated knives with plastic handles that I owned since college, but unlike my nice kitchen knives, somehow these would never disappear. With great hopes of displacing by dilution, I decided to give these a try. The wood handles are beautiful, the tang is adequate, but does not feel hefty (sometimes I like that). I would say they feel more like a surgical instrument, very sharp, very precise, and well-balanced. The wood handles are beautiful even after two years of use (hand wash only) despite the fact that I have not oiled the wood regularly. If you can stomach the price, they will not disappoint.

Rosle Onion and Vegetable ChopperTired of chopping small amounts of onions, garlic, parsley etc. Bought choppers before that did not work. Saw this one and gave it a try. Worked great. I can use it and put it in the dishwasher. After using it, bought a second on for my son that does a lot of cooking also. He also gives it good grades. It is not for chopping a whole onion but when you need a quarter cup or a few tablespoons it is excellent.

I have had nothing but trouble with this chopper. The plastic insert that fits over the blades doesn't quite fit, and it can take up to five minutes to get the blades to line up so that you can put the outer plastic ring onto the silver top. Except that it doesn't quite fit either, and the thing simply won't latch without fussing, which means the blades slide out of the plastic insert while you are fumbling with the outer plastic ring. It would be great if I had three hands, but I don't, so I'm throwing this junk out and replacing it with a simple ring chopper and wooden bowl like my mother and grandmother used.

A cheaper Cook's Special chopper was much, much easier to put together than this waste of money.

It looks cool in the photo, but it's quite fragile in your hands. Ours broke the first week...just sort of fell apart. The blades don't line up well either. Hard to clean. Miserable design. Obviously engineered and manufactured by the bottom of the barrel. A hands down, 100% FAIL.

I didn't realize that my girlfriend spent $40 on this thing. She thought she was buying a quality product. Worked fine for a while and, like the other reviewers, we began having problems reassemblying the unit after cleaning. Great idea, poorly executed. It is not sturdy enough for heavy duty kitchen usage, as I used it to chop veggies virtually every day. I am now searching for a professional model designed for restaurants.

I bought this to help me with onions...chopping them without smelling fingers or tears...happy to say it does the job well. As long as you use forceful downward thrusts with low freqency it chops well. I would consider it a good buy for the money. Of couse it chops other things as well but I haven't tried it thoughly yet.

The santoku has a permanent spot on my cutting board. It's my 'everything' knife for chopping (no bones, natch!) slicing, dicing, etc.

A quick rinse under hot water, maybe a wipe with a soapy cloth and a rinse, that's what it takes to care for it. I've had mine for six months now and it's still razor sharp.

I first found these knives at The Blade Show in Atlanta, GA in 2010. I purchased one with a bamboo handle to try out. Loved the knife but the handle broke where the blade meets it after a few months. Called Stone River Ceramics and they sent me a brand new knife with the plastic/rubber handle and told me to keep the old one, no charge at all! I epoxyed the old knife and it was fine until the tip got broke. I have not had any problem with the replacement knife which is way I decided to buy more.

I bought 3 of these sets and gave 2 of them as gifts. Both of the recipients love these knives also.

As with any ceramic knife you need to take care when washing (NO DISHWASHER, hand wash only) and storing these knives. They stay sharp for a long time but will not bend or take being banged against other hard object.

I own the santoku, nakiri, deba. and sheep's foot knives (although the sheep's foot is not damascus steel). I heartily endorse these knives and I eagerly await their next release.

I love food network products. I trust the name, as it is always great quality. This knife is like a mini-chef knife, and it is extremely sharp (probably the sharpest knife I have ever owned). Everytime I use this knife, I am impressed by the quality. The sharpness is almost scary.
