Chicago Cutlery Landmark 12-Piece Knife Set with Block
Like another reviewer, I was swayed by the recommendations of CR. Unlike several of the other reviewers, I have not yet experienced the problems encountered by them. So far, no rust spots, but I hand wash & dry immediately after use. When the set arrived the block, while not exceptional, was undamaged, and again, so far, the guides have not come loose. Perhaps customer complaints have led to a resolution to this problem?Having never had a "real" set of knives to compare these to makes a ranking difficult. However, I am satisfied for the return on the money I spent. On a further, note, my daughter, who is in culinary school, stated that these knives are a little on the lightweight side, but the balance (feel) appears good, and that they cut very well.
UPDATE: I've had this set a year now. So far no problems and I am very satisfied with my purchase. I've had no rust: I DON'T put 'em in the dishwasher; I hand wash & dry immediately. I still hold to my initial assessment: This set is a good, not great, value for the money.
For $100+ I was surpised that they were Chinese made. The block is ok not up to German, American or Japanese/Korean standards (slight imperfections). The knives are well designed and with proper care sharp and very good to work with.
I would have preferred American Made (Chicago cutlery used to be 100% American Made) but that would probably have been 3-5x the price.
Overall I am happy with the knives and will tolerate the imperfect block with it.

They were great, until I washed them. Now they have little brown spots all over them. It looks like rust to me. Since you kind of need to wash your knives now and again, I would say to avoid these. After revewing knife sets and checking CR recommendations I decided to purchase this set. CR said that Chicago cutlery was the way to go if you do not want to spend a small fortune on knifes that were still of decent quality.This is the first time I buy something that did not have a review and the first time I write a review because I was so upset with the quality. The knife are not sharp, and they rust and the block is cumbersome and the inserts that hold the knifes come out it was actually missing one when it arrived.
I hastened to open it and set it up before I noticed, otherwise, if I still had the box, I would have returned it.

This knife set for a new product, is very diappointing. I'm returning mine. Out of the box it looked cheap. I agree with other reviewer that the little plastic inserts on the block don't stay in. You have to peal if off the knife everytime you pull a knife out, to put it back on the block-CC needs to try some glue to hold them in. I had thought that since Rachael Ray's name was on it, that was good enough for me. The knives have gone dull; will barely cut through a stick of butter. The scissors, however are still sharp. I bought 4 of these sets as a wedding present. The design was selected by the bride from another store's catalog, where, by the way, they had ran out of stock. Looked it up in Amazon ( always my "to go" merchandiser ) and was very glad to find it and ( as always ) at a much lower price. The quality is superb, as expected from Yamazaki, and the detail in the handles absolutely beautiful. Very happy with the purchase. Considering to buy some for myself.

This is a piece of plastic that will tightly cover the business end of your knife and prevent you from reaching into a drawer and slicing your hand open...what more can I say about it? Made of a hard, thick plastic these covers slip over the blade of a knife and pinch it's spine in order to stay on. If you're just using these to store your knives in a drawer I'd say it's just fine. For traveling it'll probably work just as well as long as the knives are wrapped in something. You see, the guards can slip off somewhat if they're moved too much (say, if I hold the handle and swing the blade a little). They are other edge guards that clasp shut and don't really have this problem, but that doesn't keep me from recommending this product especially given the price.Want Messermeister 4" Parer Edge-Guard Discount?
Every time I purchase a new professional knife, I purchase one of these to cover the blade so I can put it in my drawer and not worry about the blade being damaged or me being cut. Highly recommend.

The knives are very nice looking and fit well with our flatware pattern and feel nice in your hand. The knives don't cut especially smoothly--tears the meat somewhat but gets the job done. The serrations seem larger and further apart than other steak knives I've used so maybe that's the difference? Overall I'm very pleased with them and may purchase another set for when we have larger parties.I purchased these for my son as a gift. He was thrilled! My husband, who is a bit of a culinary snob, was also very impressed. As far as he is concerned, the name Henckels means quality. There is substance to the knife without being overbearing for women with small hands. The gift box made the the knives even more outstanding. These knives are sharp. One of the reasons i bought them was that they are entirely in stainless steel, a single piece, so they could match my other flatware on the table and are also easy to clean. I've been cleaning them in the dishwasher and it's been ok. The logo on the blade is big so they do not look that nice on the table if your flatware style is clean and elegant and you're having a fancy dinner. But as the focus must be the food anyway, the logo might go unnoticed. For those who like heavy knives, it's not a good choice. The article is not as described -it is not "crystal clear." It had a brushed pattern on the top that I did not like at all -the whole point was to let my granite countertop show through, and that was not as expected. And it doesn't feel right when a sharp nice slices down against glass. This can't be good for your sharp knives. I do not recommend this product -I returned mine.

I am an avid amateur chef so own many knives (Henkels, Wustof) and these are just as good or better than the much more expensive options. Pure Komachi 2 Series Bread Knife
At my house, the bread knife gets used every single day, by every member of the family. It gets hammered.This thing was under ten bucks, cuts through even hard crusty bread like a laser, leaves very few crumbs on the cutting board, and still cuts like a champ a year later.
When it dulls, if I can't sharpen it using a pull-through sharpener (had a little success with this so far) then I'll just buy another just like it. Your serrated, bread-type knives, should be just like this one. Cheap to replace because sharpening them is just a pain, able to hold a good edge for their purpose, easy to clean, and high performance in their intended job. The Kai reverse-scallop edge on this knife is as close to perfect in this price class as I could find.
The only change I'd make is to make it an inch longer and charge a dollar more. You can still cut the big loaves with this, but you'll wish your blade were longer. A small price to pay.
Best bread knife anywhere. Sits proudly in the block with my Shuns, which get professionally sharpened on a regular basis.
You can buy a Shun or Global bread knife, and they are insanely great. But you'll regret the cost when they need sharpening. This knife uses the Shun bread knife edge, has good quality steel, and is easily cleaned with its nonstick coating. I have two Pure Komachi knives, this one and the sandwich knife with the same edge style. I depend on both. The rest of my knives are full-on Global and Shun, and I recommend them just as highly.
Sometimes the best knife is expensive, sometimes the best knife is inexpensive. In this case, I go with the inexpensive one.
Try it--it's only a few bucks and you'll probably love it as much as I do.

I bake bread..lots of bread. Mostly, I bake the hard, crusty hearth type breads...artisan bread, if you will. When you take the time to create a decent loaf, the last thing you want is to have your bread ripped and shredded because you don't have a sharp serrated bread knife . This is the best bread knife I own. I'm ordering 2 more because my family uses the one I have now for just about everything, and I'm tired of digging around the dishwasher to find the dang thing. I like the feel of it, and the weight..it has a good balance, and the curve of the blade is great for cutting into a crusty loaf of rustic bread. I have the expensive jobbies, and nice though they are, this one is everyone's favorite. The one I have is about a year and a half old and still has a good sharp edge. We bought an entire set of these Knives. I read the praise from other Reviewers and they are right. These are wicked sharp and as careful as I tried to be, still wound up cutting myself while cleaning one.My gripe with these Knives are the Handle material. It is a Hard Plastic. It has no texture, design grip or rubberized coating, etc. It makes it not only feel super cheap, but outright dangerous for slipping when your hands are wet. I really was not expecting much for $8-10 a knife, but this is not something to overlook. The worst part is if the plastic gets a nick in it; you get a reminder of how cheap these knives are each time you use it, as the bur digs into you hand like a thorn. Sorry, Pure Komachi... I really wanted to like these Knives because the Blade is of fantastic high quality for the price.

I own a set of the Komachi knives: Santoku Multi, Veggie, Fish, and Tomato blade. This is by far my favorite out of all of them! This light weight blade easily maneuvers through tough crusts like butter! With the other knives, I feel like I need extra weight to the blade for stability. This is not so with the bread knife. The edge was sharp when I got it.Since it's high carbon it holds an edge.
It's also stainless steel which is a plus!
For a real high carbon stainless steel blade the price is very good. I love this blade, and I will be buying the set soon.
The only downside is that the handle and blade are 2 separate parts, but that's what you get for not paying $250 and up for a high carbon stainless steel blade.
I heard complaints about the 2 pieces. If you expect more, expect to pay more. It's a great knife and I will recommend it to anyone who wants a great knife at a low cost.

Although the care info says soft cakes only... "medium" cakes should be fine... as this product seems quite sturdy. I would even say cutting ice cream cakes would be fine.. but obviously not the second you take it out of the freezer! Use your own judgment, and never force it!
Anyway, I can't wait to use these for my wedding! They are great for any time of year, but personally I think they are best for Winter. Also, I did not order through Amazon, but through Dillard's.

If you are looking for a set of knives that looks contemporary and good in your kitchen (perhaps to match your stainless steel appliances) and are not intend to use them, these knives are for you. But if you want knives to be functional, look elsewhere.This is my second set. The first set was a wedding gift and after 2 months of normal usage, it became very dull and the part where the handle and blade connect, started to rust. So we exchange them for a second set, same thing happened. Water just gets in the handles. I've found that out after I washed them for the first time and later found a puddle of water around the block. So, I wipe them dry after each wash and still, rust started to appear. These knives are very easy to bent out of shape; couple of the steak knives' serrated edges went different ways after a few dinners. The tip of the long slicer broke off.
Save your time and frustrations, DO NOT buy these knives.

My husband told me to search for an all steel set of knives so that they would hold up, the handles would never break off and they would be easily sharpened. I've owned these knives for 2 and half years now. The rubber part that keeps the blades in place on the Steak knives only is starting to rot away on a couple of them, but that's probably from using them ALOT and using the dishwasher. I'm actually back on here because I'm considering purchasing a replacement set. Shoot, at $35, I can buy an entire new set and replace any of the existing knives if they break. The two big slicers cut very well as do the two smaller paring knives. They look like you spent more than $35, and I'm not sure you can beat the value at this price point.
