Name notwithstanding, the edge on this knife is the same as the one on the Wusthof tomato and bread knives, and the knife does in fact do splendidly on tomatoes (which aren't too terribly different from sausage) and crusty bread (as long as it is skinny french bread get an 8-inch knife for the hefty american stuff).
Where this knife truly excels, however, is cutting citrus. The blade is long enough to handle grapefruit, and the scalloped edge will cut even kumquats and key limes without crushing the pulp.
So, I would have called this the citrus knife (or, maybe, the "soft things with a hard skin" knife). While mine doesn't get used as often as the paring or chef's knife, it's among our kitchen's top-five.I'd like to disagree with the "may be overkill" review. I think this knife is a fantastic addition to any kitchen, especially for a college student who can't afford a wide range of equipment. The great thing about this knife is its versatility: it's perfectly sized and can take on any number of jobs, from tomatoes to meats to bread. I only have three knives (this one, the 5" non-serrated utility, and the 8" chef's knife), and even with all the cooking I do (e.g. thanksgiving for 10), I've never needed anything more than those three essentials. Sure, you may not use the serrated utility knife as often as a chef's knife or paring knife, but you will get a great deal of use out of it. A serrated knife is indespensable, and this one is certainly well worth the investment.

Although a little pricey for a utility knife, this knife is a perfect addition to a starter set (I have the set #8832, includes chefs, bread, sandwich, parer, stick and shears). It cuts tomatoes and bagels like butter. It is one that you will reach for for those jobs that require delicate cutting (such as sausage without tearing the skin) without having to go for the more substantial knives.Strongly recommend as addition to a set which doesn't have this knife.

This is one of the best knives we own. Great for slicing fruit, veggies, and meat in small or medium projects. Very sharp and the pointed end gets used often to pierce fruit for slicing. Still love my Henkel chef's knives 6" and 8" for chopping, but this is a good companion.Want Wusthof Classic 4110 Serrated Utility Knife (Sausage knife ) 14 cm 5" Discount?
This is one of my kitchen workhorses. Gets almost as much use as my chef's knife and paring knife. I use this for tomatoes, sandwiches, rolls, bagels, slicing oranges, etc. Performs perfectly. It's very sharp and well made. You really only need 3 to 5 knives, even for the most well-equiped kitchen, and in my kitchen this is one of my 5.
