Slice 00108 Ceramic Blade Letter Opener, Green

I suspect that most of the very positive reviews were written within a few hours of purchase. I also was happy with this tool...at first. It took a couple of envelopes before I got the hang of how to hold the Slice and envelope in order to successfully open it, but once I did, things went smoothly, cutting the envelope, never the contents. However, after about the 4th or 5th envelope, I noticed the blade acting duller and duller until it just would not open anything. I switched to using it left-handed so that I could use the other side of the blade. Same thing happened: great at first but the blade became dull after about 4 envelopes. I shall be writing to the manufacturer about my disappointment also. (Purchased at Von's $4.99)

I purchased two of these over a year ago (one for me and one for my mom), and they've never left an envelope uncut! The product is easy to use, so I'm not quite sure why the other reviewers had issues. Maybe they were defective. They should've tried contacting the manufacturer for a replacement or refund (I'd hope they send a replacement, but I wouldn't know first hand). Anyways, mine (and my mom's) work great, so kudos to slice!

Picked this up at safeway for a few bucks. It works really well. Ceramic blade is a nice touch. You just run it over the top of the envelope and it puts a nice, clean cut on the front side of the envelope about 2mm from the top. I'm not sure what 'proper technique' is but I run the envelope through perpendicular to the cutter. It looks like it could potentially cut through the a page or two of the contents inside if you're not careful though. My trick is to tap the envelope on the table a few times to settle the contents to the bottom, and then do the cut. If that doesn't work you can always cut the envelope on the short side. And if the envelope is really that full maybe you should just open it by hand.

I honestly don't know why this has such bad ratings...

This letter opener is difficult to handle. Hard to draw envelope thru slicer. Hasn't sliced a clean cut on 20 attempts of various envelope thicknesses, mostly regular envelope stock.
