Kuhn Rikon Ratchet Salt Pepper Grinder

I received this item as a gift recently.

Overall, it seems to be a nice grinder. It's far faster than models where you need to spin something around to grind the salt or pepper inside, and loading it with peppercorns or salt is very easy. If you're not careful, the rocking motion can send ground material flying off to the sides of whatever you're using it on, but a firm grip on the lower portion fixes that easily.

I used it almost daily for about a week before it stopped working. Midway through peppering a salad dressing I was making, the lever got stuck. I loosened and tightened the adjustable grinder to try to loosen up whatever was stuck, but from what I could see, nothing was actually stuck in the grinder. When I tried to resume grinding, the lever made it through about 2 more cranks before it made a loud "pop" noise. The bottom of the grinder dropped out of the device, and all the peppercorns fell out.

It appears that the drive shaft that runs through the middle of the grinder is attached to the grinding mechanism in a very weak manner. I don't know enough about manufacturing to tell whether the portion where the grinder attaches to the drive shaft was die cast as one piece, or welded together somehow but however it was connected, the connection was weak enough for the metal to shear apart under a relatively small amount of torque.

This is pretty disappointing, because it's probably the nicest salt/pepper grinder I've ever used (while it worked).

We found this grinder at a Sur Le Table store in Portland this fall and because of its unique mechanism we had to try it. Since then it has been the most popular item in the kitchen. We fill it with a medley pepper found on line and use it frequently as it is so easy and delivers a lot of fresh ground pepper in a short amount of time. We often wonder how recipes expect a goood helping of pepper when it takes longer to crank out the grind from a traditional mill than the whole recipe.

I recently bought more as presents for family and friends.

This pepper grinder is so much better than others I have used in the past. It allows you to select the size of the grind, and it is much faster and easier to use than those that you turn. I'm buying one for my mother since she has arthritis in her hands because I think this will be easier for her to use. It is also super easy to fill; it is just a great product (and I love the purple color).
