Wusthof Gourmet 5-Inch Spreader

Wusthof Gourmet 5-Inch SpreaderIf you look around, most sandwich spreaders are small, frumpy blades that are made for little more than buttering a muffin. Not this Wusthof, which includes its classic handle design along with a strong sharply serrated blade that flexes slightly. As usual, Amazon has the dimensions wrong. This knife measures 9.25 inches long and its blade is 2" wide. You're not cheated on handle length either; it's the same as other classic Wusthof knives. That means it can reach to the bottom of most jars with ease. If you've never had a spreader around the house, you're in for a treat. It's a tool you will use for the rest of your life, and one of these Wusthof spreaders will last that long. Don't leave them soaking in water nor submit them to the dishwasher; they clean quickly and easily, then wipe dry.

This is a well made product and I like it and will keep it. That being said I thought that it was dishwasher safe, and it is not. I have a rust stain that I can't remove. I just won't put his in the dishwasher again.

This knife was absolutely worth the money. I bought a four pack of a cheaper knife, and, while they work, they are definitely not as nice as this one. I can't wait until they can be thrown out so I can buy a second one of these.

The only negative thing? Well... it's a bit longer than what I'm used to. I'm more used to a handle that is less "formed" to my grip, and I'm not sure that was really necessary for me to like this knife. It's not a big deal, though.

We use these primarily as everyday butter spreaders, making PB&Js, making nutella sandwiches, etc. But it cuts up ham & cheese sandwiches, too. Just a good purchase, and good products are worth good money.

The world of sandwich knives/spreaders seems to be populated by extremely cheap products and by ones that are much more than the task demands. It's hard to find something in the middle. This spreader is a bit into the "more than the task demands" category, but it's nice enough to be worth owning one or two. It feels good to use (weight, balance, handle), and is robust enough to handle yesterday's bagel and the spread that got too hard in the fridge. It looks nice, as well. It's longer than most inexpensive spreaders, which helps get the bottom-of-the-jar jam or mayonnaise.

The handle shape makes it feel more like a knife when used for cutting (when compared to spreaders with non-contoured handles); that's a minor nicety, but might be an important one if using this spreader commercially (e.g.) at a deli counter.
