Zyliss Sandwich Knife

Zyliss Sandwich KnifeZyliss is a Swiss manufacturer of small kitchen utensils. The design, quality, and reliability is comparable to and sometimes better than Oxo, but Zyliss has a slightly different product range and a style of its own (Zyliss uses more color whereas Oxo has a more black-and-white approach). I bought the sandwich knife because I was tired of using tableware knives or paring knives.

The Zyliss knife has been excellent for its stated purpose. It is wide enough that it is more handy than other knives for spreading mayonnaise or cream cheese. With its serrated edge, it can also do small cutting tasks (such as completing the slice on pre-sliced bagels). The pricing is very reasonable for a knife of this sort and quality. The yellow-orangish grip color is attrative although a departure from my kitchen decor (such as it is). This is definitely a keeper, something that will be frequently used and appreciated.

UPDATE: This knife works so well that my girlfriend insisted that I buy her one as well. So I did. In addition to handling spreads very well, the knife is also good for quick chopping jobs. And it is by far the best tool I have found for opening all the delivery boxes I receive from Amazon. It's much more suited to that purpose than my kitchen knives and shows no sign of wear or dulling from this extra duty.

I like the way this sandwich knife feels in my hand and I use it nearly every day. However a few trips through the dishwasher have produced a number of spots, dare I say, STAINS in the ironically named stainless steel blade. The spots are small, the largest pinhead sized; the smallest spot or stain is pinpoint sized. Zyliss has either changed to an inferior type of steel or they are not keeping a close enough eye on their Chinese partners. I ordinarily would've bought Oxo but there were a number of complaints about this very thing happening with their sandwich knife so I bought the Zyliss. To be fair, from my reading, it seem to be a worse issue with the Oxo than the Zliss. It now is more than $2 cheaper than when I bought mine, so it is a good deal. Just be forewarned that in between uses you're not going to put it in a display case to proudly highlight a dull wall in your kitchen. Even Barkeeper's Friend won't make this leopard change its spots.

I really like this Zyliss sandwich spreader, and you need to note 2 things:

1) It is VERY sharp, which for me is great to cut sandwiches and bagels with ease for a change!

2) It is NOT made of "stainless steel", it's made of stainless/inox -per Wikepedia: In metallurgy, stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French "inoxydable", is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5%[1] to 11% chromium content by mass.[2] Stainless steel does not corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does, but despite the name it is NOT FULLY STAIN-PROOF [my caps], most notably under low oxygen, high salinity, or poor circulation environments.[3] It is also called corrosion-resistant steel or CRES when the alloy type and grade are not detailed, particularly in the aviation industry. There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required.

This is much better than the old wood handled spreaders that I've had and even the OXO which has been my favorite for quite some time. Xyliss' spreader to me is just a tad better because it is sharper, so you need to be careful cutting items, but it saves me the effort of getting out a knife to cut the sandwich or bread I'm working with. So, wash it and dry it quickly and well and it will stay spiffy and almost stainless for a long time!

This knife is great for the daily lunch-making. Knife is good size fro spreading, and it also has a serrated edge to cut the sandwich when you are done. It will not easily cut things like bananas, b/c the blade is so rounded. But perfect for sandwiches and toast.

I am a Zyliss fan and this spreader does not disappoint. I bought two of these and am ordering more. A friend claimed one for themself immediately. It handles very well and feels balanced. It cuts tomatoes and spreads well. I thought the blade size might make it clumsy but have quickly adjusted to this slightly larger size. I recommend this sandwhich knife gladly. Cheers!
