The can opener in question has no telling how many years service without being serviced, so after much research and debate I opted for replacement parts instead of a new can opener. Forty-dollars as opposed to one-hundred and fiftly was a no brainer for me. After the replacing the gear as well as the knife, the can opener is back to it's glory days and it is now a pleasure and not a dread to have to open cans.
