Rada Cutlery Vegetable Peeler, Made in USA

Rada Cutlery Vegetable Peeler, Made in USA, Aluminum HandleMy opinion, because I personally prefer the larger Deluxe size and I use a dishwasher: Three stars for the regular size aluminum version; down one for aluminum handle and one for regular size. Four stars for black handle, regular size. I rate the black handled Deluxe version as five stars. In spite of variable star rating, for various Rada peelers, the unobstructed high quality blade is superb. Read on.

The Amazon descriptions for the great (see other reviews) Rada vegetable peelers sometimes lack key information which, from the radacutlery dot com site, products page, is as follows. Pay attention to the model numbers; assume a smaller size if model number is not listed.

There are TWO peelers:

The Vegetable Peeler (Item #: R132 / W232) is blade 1 3/4", overall 7 1/4".

The Deluxe Vegetable Peeler (Item #: R141 / W241) is blade 2", overall 8 3/8". Note longer blade & handle.

There are TWO handles, one aluminum and one black dishwasher safe. This explains some of the differences in price between listings and some reviewer comments. In reviews, pay attention to the "This review is from:" line, because Amazon groups reviews, not making distinctions between aluminum handle and black handle reviews.

To make comparisons of all the peelers, search within Amazon for, simply, Rada Peeler. That gives you the aluminum peelers with the option to click on black handled version. But, if you click on black handle option you cannot review the item. If, however, you search "Rada peeler black" you can then review the black handled version. I now have only black handled Radas.

If you have a dishwasher AND plan on cleaning your peeler in it, I'd stay away from the nice looking but impractical aluminum handle models, because aluminum reacts with dishwasher detergents, causing it to turn color and over time to look horrible (my opinion) compared to an original finish. If you hand wash the aluminum handled peeler (or knives), no problem. Other reviewers have mentioned the color change. My comments on aluminum and dishwashers is not based on the Rada product specifically; they are based on long, long experience with many different aluminum products in dishwashers.

I wish Rada would make a shiny stainless handle, but the black dishwasher safe handle models are quite fine. Buy two, one to give to a relative or friend; you'll like it enough to share it.

If you are considering getting some (highly rated) Rada knives, be sure to go to the "view cutlery by size" link page of the company website to get the blade size dimensions which are not given for many knives listed via Amazon, yet which is key info for online purchasing, so you can compare to your knives currently in counter-top holders or your drawers. Buy black dishwasher safe handles!

My mom and I bought this peeler from a little old lady at a flea market 11 years ago. Since then it has been the only peeler we've used. When I went away to college I tried to find one for myself and have been scouring flea markets for years trying to find the seller/product. I tried every other peeler from cheap grocery store ones to expensive department store specialty shops, without equal results. I'm very glad to see them available on Amazon. This peeler is just as sharp today as it was the first day we bought it. Peels were thin and smooth all around whether you cut an apple/potato/whatever. Can be used by both righty/lefties and is very lightweight and maneuverable. I love it so much I ended buying 10 more for family members. Highly recommended!

I had the OXO peeler with the fat handle because, at the time, that is all I found at the store. I didn't think much of a peeler but had some issues with that peeler, and when it came up missing one day, I knew I would not be getting another one of those.

Because one of the issues I had with my old peeler was the peels getting stuck in the "D" design, I knew I wanted a straight design. The only ones available at the local stores were the OXO or a straight one made of very cheap plastic (for the same price as this one). I decided to hold out for a good quality peeler that could last me a lifetime. I found this peeler on Amazon and I have to say, I am SO happy I did. The stainless steel blade is super sharp and the eye remover slices easily through the potato, compared to the plastic OXO peeler.

People who have arthritis may not be comfortable with the small, lightweight, aluminum handle, however, I find I have more control over this peeler than the one with the clumsy fat handle. I also like that it takes up half the space in my cutlery tray.

I no longer dread the peeling process and get through it much faster with such a sharper blade. I don't have a problem with having to reposition the peeler in my hand as I am working. It can be used right or left handed, toward or away from you, for whatever your peeling needs are. Also, the peels are super thin and because of the straight design, don't fly all over the place if I am working quickly. I can peel right into the trash can without making a mess. The construction is integrated and solid, so I expect that it will last me a long time, that is, if I don't loose it.

I love Rada cutlery, and this peeler is one of the reasons. I'd put up with the grocery store peelers for years and was thoroughly disgusted with the quality and utility. Nevertheless, I just couldn't bring myself to spend oodles of money on something that was rarely used. At one of the big Home & Garden shows, the Rada seller was demonstrating the peeler. I purchased the peeler and knife set; I've never regretted that first impulse Rada purchase.

The peeler is still working wonderfully well, even after 15 years. Since that time, I've purchased a whole array of Rada cutlery and continue to purchase things as new items are introduced.

I'm not a Rada dealer and generally find someone online to purchase from, so this really is an unbiased customer review.

Want Rada Cutlery Vegetable Peeler, Made in USA Discount?

I've been a cook and homemaker for 30 years now, and have had at least half a dozen vegetable peelers. Every one of them either rusted or got dull with use. I bought this one on the recommendation of a friend, and it's the best one I've ever had. I should have known it would be good quality since I have a Rada paring knife that is my go-to favorite.

This peeler is super sharp and stays sharp much longer than any other one I've had. It's made from excellent quality stainless and aluminum, and doesn't rust like some of my other peelers have done. It is a nice size to fit in my hand and makes quick work of peeling potatoes, carrots and even kiwi fruit. The pointed tip makes removing the eyes from potatoes or bad spots from vegetables and fruit very easy.

The best part (for me) is that it's made in the USA. I've gotten to the point I won't buy any more Chinese-made junk if I can find a similar product made somewhere else. Knowing I'm helping an American stay employed made choosing this product simple.

If you're looking for a vegetable peeler that will be in your kitchen years from now, choose this one!
