At the time we replaced the shears, the steel blades were still sharp and the serrated metal handle insert was in perfect working order. I assume the reason the shears lasted so long is that we didn't put them in the dishwasher as per the manufacturer's recommendation. We used a child's toothbrush to clean the hard-to-reach areas between the blades.
In summary, you can spend more on a pair of kitchen shears but why would you want to when you can get years of great service from J.A. Henckels International Kitchen Shears.

This scissor is great. It is sharp and stays sharp. I have 3 of them. One I use for general use. One is for my knitting and crocheting. The third one is for the kitchen. It will cut through small fish bones and chicken ribs. I use it for cutting up vegetables and meat (a lot easier than a knife will). The scissors I got from Wal-Mart looked good, but were sprung. The plastic handled scissors from Wal-Mart are junk compared to this one. It costs twice as much as the cheap scissors, but it is worth a lot more too.Read Best Reviews of J.A. We've had these shears for two years and notwithstanding punishing use in the garden and kitchen, they have stood up and retained their sharpness. They are very versatile, good for cutting almost anything from herbs, to chicken bones, to garden hoses, to paper, to cardboard. We just bought a second pair to avoid the "Are the shears inside or out?" syndrone. They have not rusted even though they are frequently used wet.I use these scissors for everything when I'm cooking. I love using them to cut into raw chicken (even though the bone on chicken breasts) to make pieces smaller. The scissors are great for making chopped salads; just "cut" the lettuce and vegetables in the bowl to get a chopped salad. They are easy to wash and dry but I also place them in the dishwasher. I highly recommend these for all uses in the kitchen.
