Wusthof 22 slot swivel storage block

There are TWO main things that are very wrong with this block...

One The slot designed for your kitchen shears is too small. I have a standard size pair of shears, that fit perfectly into other blocks, and there was just no way. This was definitely problematic, but even MORE problematic ...

Two The steak knife slots are set too low so the knife tips would drag on the base when you turn it. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way when I put a steak knife (again, standard size!) in and swiveled it. The point dragged scratching the base before I realized that it was ill-fitting.

A third thing that I think is worth mention is the fact that the lower part, that is designed for your steak knives, is not neatly attached. It looks chintzy as though it were not cut neatly and glued on sloppily.

All that said, I would really think it over a great deal before making the purchase online because this is very heavy and due to today's high shipping costs it would not be viable to return it. I ended up keeping it for that reason, but I would absolutely NOT buy this again if I could go back in time.

Perhaps the best idea would be to go to a B&M store and look it over in person first, then come online to find a better price if it meets your expectations.

Excellent product, although with a few minor alterations, it's become even better.

My needs were to find a small scale knife block that could store at least 5 large chef's knives, and at least 18 knives total.

When I found this one, it sounded perfect and the swivel sounded like an added bonus. The affordable price for a known brand product sealed the deal.

As it turns out, the swivel was more of a bother than a help. Unless you are going to be placing this block in the middle of the counter, or perhaps on an island, the swivel does you no good at all. If it's placed back against the backsplash wall like I have it, there's no room for it to swivel around. Instead, it just moves enough to be annoying everytime you reach for a knife.

This problem was easily solved by just unscrewing the swivel hardware, and re-attaching the flat base with some double stick tape.

The second problem I had was that I needed just one more large opening. Problem solved easily again with the help of a long, thin saw (we used a sawz-all). I merged the two middle medium sized slots into one to become an additional large slot. If you are going to do this, do it before re-attaching the flat base since it's easier if you can use the saw from both the top and the bottom of the block.

Oh one more minor detail. The scissors slot is more suited to fit a pair of boning shears than usual kitchen scissors. Scissors will fit, but not perfectly.

All in all, I would certainly purchase this again and recommend it to anyone looking for a quality product at an amazingly affordable price.

Other blocks were more than triple the cost, and the time it took me (maybe 30 min. total) to remove the swivel and enlarge the two slots were was well worth the end result.

Product came on time and in excellent condition. The block is high quality and built very well. Plenty of room for a variety of knives. The only reason that I rated it 4 instead of 5 stars, is that the block swivels a little too easily. Anytime you either put in or take out a knife or accidently tap it, it swings to the left or right quite a bit. Other than that, it's a great looking block that should last for years and provide ample protection for your knives.

The first block I ordered arrived with the bindings separated and wood split in several places. I was pleased with the customer service as the block was promptly replaced. When I received the replacement I noticed the "Made in China" sticker which helps better explains the quality control issues. The replacement block was aesthetically perfect, however this block did not swivel well and the bearings had so much play that the block was wobbly.

Since the first block I received swiveled well, I decided to swap the base with from the old block to its replacement. I removed the base to find the original swivel was much larger than the newer model. The replacement swivel which probably about 50% smaller has a copper pressure fitting which doesn't match the quality of the steel one. My observations tell me the smaller/lower quality swivel isn't large enough to sustain the large 22 slot block. The more sturdy swivel was most likely replaced with a cheap low-quality swivel because of costs.

I was able to align the good swivel /base with the new block and countersink the screws to make a quality block from the two. The block is overall nice and heavy but I wouldn't purchase the version with the swivel again and don't recommend it to others.
