The lighter side is 240 grit, the darker side is 120 grit. It worked well when sharpening my butcher knife. I used this stone for abrasion/steel removal, and another stone for polishing the edge. It's true, the box says aluminum, not silicon carbide, but I don't know the difference. The two sides (one gray, one blue) are only slightly different grains so close, I wish they were labeled. It's solid and a nice size, long enough to get a good stroke going on a fairly long knife easy to use for this amateur at knife sharpening.Buy Update International G-0208 Silicon Carbide Combination Sharpening Stone, 8-Inch Now
This had to be replaced because the first one arrived broken into many pieces. It does sharpen the knives OK, but not sure how good a job it does as the knife seems to need sharpening more often than I thought it would need.I ordered what I thought would be a silicon carbide, but the box sent was aluminum carbide. While this isn't so bad from a value point of view (they should cost pretty close to the same amount), I hate hate HATE getting something that I didn't order, ESPECIALLY when I ordered it for someone else!! :( Fix it, Amazon!Want Update International G-0208 Silicon Carbide Combination Sharpening Stone, 8-Inch Discount?
