Shun MHS0400 Stainless Steel Steak Knife Set, 4-Piece

Shun MHS0400 Stainless Steel Steak Knife Set, 4-PieceThat line was said to me by my boyfriend as we sat down to a dinner of prime grade ribeyes (from Costco) and sauteed spinach. We have had the steaks from Costco several times over the last two years, always with the same recipe and preparation method. Until this last meal, we had used my Henckels steak knives. Those are serrated, and after several years, we were felt we were almost sawing through the meat to cut it. Since I know how tender these steaks are, that's saying something.

The first cut was so easy and smooth, I almost wondered if the last few times with the Henckels it was just tough steak. So I went to the box where I'd stored my Henckels set till they sell on Craig's list and pulled one out. Sure enough, I still had to saw. And I can assure you that the steaks were tender, shouldn't have been that difficult to cut. So the folks who'd been telling me for months that I need to drop the serrated steak knives can now tell me "I told you so."

Yes, you will have to sharpen these knives. But if you're willing to live without them for a few weeks (and I'm not sure at this point I want to part with mine that long), Shun will sharpen these knives with a free lifetime service.

The other thing we both noticed about the steak was that all that "mumbo-jumbo" about steaks being juicier when the knife used to cut it isn't serrated: there's something to it. The steaks were juicier. Those were the best steaks we've had in a long time. And a few nights later, I had my family over for dinner and had a repeat performance. Even if you can't afford these non-serrated knives, find yourself a set somewhere. You will find it does improve your steak eating experience. If you can afford it, I've never used a better steak knife. And I've used some really nice ones, including several rated "best steak knife" by various experts.

I did get this set on a lightning deal for $150, so that did help. I want another set, but I'll have to wait until the next lightning deal comes around. Hint, hint, Amazon.

PS: My boyfriend wasn't quite so jealous when one of his Christmas presents this year was a Shun paring knife. :)

Like all Shun knives, these are well-balanced, comfortable to hold and retain a sharp edge. I purchased them via an Amazon Lightning Deal, so they were about $100 less than typical, making them an excellent deal.

Dull or lower quality knives can tear steak or cut the fibers, pulling the juices from the meat and leaving a pool on your plate. Sharp knives like these cut cleanly, leaving the juices in the meat and provide a more tender mouth feel when chewing. I do own a set of Shun Classic knives, including a honing tool, which can be used on these knives. While they Shun makes a set of Classic steak knives as well, I prefer these for their all steel construction. Steak knives like these may be used on a daily basis and are easily cleaned without impacting the finish on the handles; the Classic knives may show wear & tear on the handle, even though the blade is well-maintained. Overall these are recommended steak knives, whether you own other Shun knives or not.

Full disclosure: I do have a full set of Shun knives from paring to santoku and love them.

It makes such a difference in the kitchen when you have a good knife set.

So when I saw their steak knife set, come up on the daily deal I couldn't resist.

They are great steak knives that actually cut, no more sawing through the meat.

I am very happy with this purchase.

I bought these Shun knives when they were offered as an Amazon "deal" for $150. Our old steak knives were getting dull plus they always annoyed me because they had round handles and the knives were always falling off the edge of the plate. Not only are these knives super-sharp, but the flat sides of the handles actually keep the utensil on the plate. At $150 I'd buy another set.

As it turns out, I bought another set at $159.95. These knives are terrific--way better than any others (Chicago and Gerber) that I have previously purchased.

I love these knives. I am amazed how easily they cut through steak and other meats. They are super sharp and hold their edge nicely. They also are one piece of metal which means there are no little nooks and crannies for germs and bacteria to hide. They can easily be cleaned and sanitized throughout. It should be noted, as with all quality knives you should hand wash them quickly after use and dry them, place them back in the block, or a magnetic strip or other safe place. Keeping them wet for too long could have them start to rust, and dishwashers can cause damage as well.
