Dexter-Russell 6-by-3-Inch Stainless Steel and Walnut Dough Scraper

I wanted a high-quality dough scraper/bench knife and kept coming back to this one from Dexter-Russell. This is a simple piece of kitchen equipment so there's no sense in belaboring the point other than to say that it's a pleasure to still be able to find a US-made product, and of such high quality, to boot. I'm going to take the manufacturer at his word that the handle is walnut; whatever it is, it's beautiful (although I wish the ends had been sanded smooth) and feels wonderful in the hand. The blade is stainless steel and has a good edge (I wouldn't subject it to the rigors of granite or marble too often, though, unless you want to deal with sharpening it). It has a nice heft when being used and, contrary to a previous review, there's no evidence whatsoever that the tang protrudes on either side of the handle--mine is seated perfectly.

I do recommend using a wood conditioner on the handle periodically to keep it in good shape but other than that, care is easy: just keep it clean and don't subject any part of the handle to water for extended periods (I hand-wash mine). If you treasure good tools and want a scraper that's nice enough to think of in terms of passing on to someone dear, look no further.

Works wonderfully in cast iron, so much better than wood or plastic.

The edge can also be used to cut things up in the pan or on a griddle, watch next time you are near a short order chef cooking up gyros, philly steaks, or similar, I bet they use something like this to chop and maneuver the food on the griddle.

Keep it nice by only handwashing, don't let it soak either. Occasionaly touch the wood up with some food safe oil, like olive or mineral oil.

The sharp corners can be a liability, be careful not to gouge or stab.

I was a bit concerned about ordering this product after reading the earlier review. I received the product in good order and I found it to be a very well made and a worthy piece of equipment for professional use. Amazon specifies the handle to be made of walnut, but the model I received is clearly made of rosewood. I am very satisfied with my purchase!

I have owned this cutter for years and it is the only one to purchase. The rounded handles of other cutters look ergonomic, but don't have the wonderful feel of scraping or cutting dough as this one. Think about it. Round handles lose the pressure of your hand as you maneuver this tool to do its work. The handle is made of cherry wood and attached with brass rivets. It is simply a work of art. I love love love using this S496 Dexter tool and realize my appreciation every single time I use it. And so will you.

I purchased the Dexter Russell dough scraper since it is made in the USA. I was concerned due to the negative review about the product quality.

The scraper I received has a nicely made smooth wood handle with the blade inserted without exposure on the ends of the handle. The wood is not walnut and appears to be the rosewood. However, this does not detract from the product quality as both woods are good.

There are some surface scratches on the blade, but this does not detract from the utility of this scraper.

I tried out the scraper with a batch of dough I was making into ciabatta bread and the blade cut my dough beautifully. I used a plastic scraper to clean up my countertop as the Dexter scraper probably would scratch.

The logo on the scraper I received is different from the one depicted. However, the same model number is present with USA and the stylized name Dexter.

Alaskan Inupiat Style Walnut Ulu Knife with "Puffin Sunset" Etched Blade & Display Stand

I purchased this Ulu to replace the one I bought in Ketchikan over 35 years ago. The handle on the older knife finally gave up the ghost and repeated feeble attempts to fix it did not work. This new Ulu is a little thinner gauge of steel than the older one and the wooden display stand is a lot smaller. I threw out the new display stand and am using the older one.

We use Ulu knives a lot. They are great in a variety of applications where standard bladed knives are not so good. If you do much slicing and dicing, you need an Ulu in your kitchen.

We owned a Ulu knife but wanted another one for use in our RV. We like our new Knife and will use it often.

I bought this as a gift for my daughter who is a big Rachael Ray fan and she loves it. The smaller of the two is her go-to favorite.

I got this knife set from my mother for Christmas. I love it. Unfortunately, the smaller knife broke when I was tapping it on a pan! I went to Furi Cutlery's web site and tried the e-mail there (sales@Füricutlery.com) but it was undeliverable. I called the phone number (925) 417-0617 and got "hello?". So I asked, "Is this Furi Cutlery" and the guy said "You have the right number but it is Sunday. Can you call back tomorrow"? WHAT KIND OF RINKY DINK BUSINESS IS THIS? Does this guy makes these knives in his basement or what? I mean, really. Come on!

I'll update this post after I find out what kind of trouble I have to go through to get the replacement.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Signature 7-Piece Knife Set with Block

I have a set of mid-range Henckels that I bought some years ago, and they are -muchbetter than this. I bought this set for my daughter because they were a good compromise between quality and price, and she won't ruin then in the dishwasher. I would have thought that Henckels wouldn't make any actual crap, but this set comes awfully close. The good thing is, boy are they sharp. But there's bad things too. Only the 8" chef's knife and the shears have any feel of quality at all, the rest are -verythin and flimsy. 'Laser-cut' edges are overrated make them another millimeter thick please, so they can make a precise cut without the blade bending and taking off in an unintended direction. A good knife is an extension of the cook's intention it does what you want, and does NOT require thought and pre-conception and compensation in every cut. (...)is waaay too much for one adequate chef's knife and some toys. Very disappointed in Henckels, and in Amazon too, I don't feel I got what I ordered.

Henckels Twin Signature 7-Piece Block Set is exactly what I'd hoped that it would be: a quality set of knives that is ideal for the home.

The set of Henckels that I've owned since the mid-80s finally gave in to a lot of use, sharpenings and dishwashings (dishwashing a good knife is a nice way to shorten the handle's life expectancy!). But 20 years of great service from my previous set of Henckels certainly warranted a loyal update/upgrade to another Henckels set.

And I am not disappointed. The new set is quite sturdy. Home users will be impressed with their strength; pros might be used to a higher standard, but I used to work in a professional kitchen and I can't see how these would not be as effective as anything a pro has.

These knives come out of the box SHARP too...a lot sharper than the sharpest that I've ever had my previous set sharpened to.

There were two descriptions from Amazon that tell you what you get; one of Amazon's descriptions included a carving knife (product description) and the other a peeling knife (what's in the box). Amazon seems to have corrected the error as of this updated 2-13-2006 writing. To be sure, here's what you actually get:

2 1/2" peeling knife

4" paring knife

5" serrated knife

8" chef's knife...this baby cuts through a roast like a hot knife through butter even though it's designed for chopping and dicing. In my opinion, it's better than a carving knife.

a sharpening steel

kitchen shears

and a storage block with 11 slots which is great because some of the knives, especially the serrated knives, from my old set are still in mint shape (like the 8" bread knife), so there's plenty of room in the block for knives in your current collection looking for a new place to sleep.

No 8" carving knife. But like I said above, the 8" chef's knife works better than any carving knife that I've used.

The only things missing from this set for the average home is a nice large bread knife (as I said this was not a problem for me) and steak knives (also not a problem as most households already have these). Plain and simple, this is a great set of food preparation knives that--if my previous set is any indication--will last for decades.

Rialto Translucent Red Corkscrew

I was skeptical of this device because I'm so jaded by marketing hype. This product, however, is just great. The screw is teflon coated, which makes it noticeably easier to screw into the cork. It also makes it easier to remove the cork from the screw.

It also has a so-called two-stage hook (I have no if there's a proper name for the thing that hooks onto the lip of the bottle). If you use the shorter one first, it doubles the leverage, making it much easier to start pulling the cork. At around the halfway point, you can switch to the longer hook and finish the process.

Even the foil cutter is well-designed. It has a sharp serrated edge that makes cutting through the foil very easy. In contrast, I've used the straight edged kind and found them to be very difficult to use.

I've seen and used other two-stage corkscrews, but this one works well, doesn't slip and has a very solid feel. It's hand-friendly, meaning that there are no pressure points that make opening the bottle uncomfortable.

If there's any negative, its the price, which is a couple of dollars high as corkscrews go. However, I gladly paid for two more to give to my (grown) kids.

Update: When I said that this corkscrew was a couple of dollars high, I hadn't checked recent prices. Apparently, the price is now about two dollars less than I paid for it a few weeks ago. (I paid $10+ and it's now $8+). Rats!

Not too shabby of a wine key. It's not as good as I expected since I have used others that were more to my liking, but it's pretty nice for the price. Only thing that I didn't really like was that the foil cutter was a little too big and huge serrations.

Wilton Silver Beaded Cake Knife and Server Set

When I ordered this cake serving set with the hope of using it for my wedding, I loved it! When it arrived, though, I was disappointed to see that the handles are plastic, not metal like they appear in the photo. I don't know how durable they would be, and was worried that the metal blade would end up breaking apart from the plastic eventually. I also felt like the plastic handles made them feel cheap. I was very interested in getting a knork to try, because I have rheumatoid arthritis that severely affects my hands. I wound up getting mine from Bed Bath and Beyond, and we bought a set of 4 satin-finish forks.

These are terrific. The weight of them makes them fit my hand very well. I can cut things like gyros meat, chicken liver and sausage easily without having to use a knife. The curve of the tines also helps pick things up a little easier.

This is a great tool for certain kinds of disability. The satin finish looks fine. I'm so pleased with this item.

OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler/Parer Set

I am consistently amazed at the high quality and low price of all the OXO kitchen products. Though I like heftier knives, this peeler is the best. The only caveat is that it takes a little getting used to the "direction of peel" towards you, but once you do get used to it (a couple of carrots should suffice) you'll never go back to the classic at your mother's house.

I bought this set when I first moved into my apartment, as I've been a fan of the Good Grips products for a while now. This set is absolutely indespensible, as I use these tools almost every day.

Peeler: This is wonderful for peeling potatoes, as the easy-to-grip handle and swivel blade help you to comfortably maneuver around bumpy and slippery surfaces.

Knife: Since purchasing the set 4 months ago, my knife has stayed incredibly sharp and is able to cut through everything from crunchy carrots to smooshy tomatoes.

Here's why the set didn't get the "5" rating: The pair should be hand washed and *not* put in the dishwasher. The knife got a tad rusty after running it through a cycle. Note: This was easy to correct with a Brillo pad and a little elbow grease.

However, I don't think you should let this "diswasher drama" sway you from purchasing this set, as the benefits *far* outweigh the limitations.

The paring knife has proved quite good, but I cannot find strong enough terms to express my disappointment in the peeler. I can't understand all the recommendations. It requires an undue amount of pressure to peel at all, digs chunks out of the vegetable and doesn't peel smoothly. It feels as though I've used a rather dull knife instead of a highly recommended kitchen tool. Even my small crew of teenage peelers have opted to use our old one from the grocery store. It has no curved edge to remove eyes and although the handle is very comfortable, it is otherwise useless.

Hi! I bought this set soon after I began having problems with my hands about four years ago. I thank my lucky stars that I did! I later discovered I had rheumatoid arthritis, so these kitchen tools have been a Godsend. The peeler especially has made it possible for me to be able to cook many things I had simply given up on previously. I had experienced so much pain before due to peelers which required too much force to use, partly due to dull blades and rigid blade formats. This peeler is so sharp, and is so clever with its freely swiveling motion, that it peels smoothly and swiftly; if anything, one almost has to pay attention not to remove too much when peeling because it *is* so effortless! The paring knife is splendid also. For me, with my arthritis, the handles on both tools are really beautifully designed, and enable me to cook even on some of my worst days. I always handwash my utensils and have never had any problems with rust, as some reviewers have mentioned, and both utensils have remained very sharp all these years. These were the first OXO tools I bought, and I was so enamored that I have since bought more. I would probably buy the whole OXO line if I were rich enough! I am pleased that somebody thought of people with arthritis --and good design in general --at long last.

Architec The Gripper Bamboo Cutting Board, 11 by 14-Inch

Love love love this cutting board. Hard rubber gripper feet are secured within the wood, NOT glued on, so they'll never come off. I have the smaller version of this board as well. Just be sure to oil it plenty when you first get it, and once a week for a month, and then once a month after that. Plain mineral oil from the drugstore is fine it's the same as the "bamboo" oil that's much more expensive.

Having owned several bamboo cutting boards, I decided to purchase two of these for my mother, who has been using the same cutting board set for almost a decade for christmas. The main purpose was because bamboo cutting boards are much more hygienic, more environmentally friendly (bamboo grows quickly and is a very renewable source), and that it's pretty tough.

The boards do come a little fuzzy at first, but after a bit of use and washing, they become very strong. As is with most lower end boards, cut marks do become visible, but those will eventually wear away as the outer finish of the board grows more weathered. This is nothing bad.

The best selling point about these boards are the rubber feet. While they do take away an entire side of a board to use for cooking, they provide a vital role in keeping the board still while you're dicing (these boards are light and would probably slide around otherwise without the feet; I've had bad experience with other boards sliding around) and also helps air the board while it dries, keeping the bamboo off the ground and letting the water soak in and promote bacterial growth.

My only qualms about this board are the lightness of the bamboo. My own boards are very dark in color, giving them a very rich quality. These boards are VERY light in color, so if you really like matching your cookware, make sure that you have a brighter kitchen, or you may begin thinking these are a bit of an eye-sore.

I don't normally "love" cutting boards, but I love this one. It's simple, elegant, and beautiful. The rubber grips on the bottom are great too, keeping it from slipping around and holding it off the table, so you can put it back there right after hand washing.

People call these things ice cream scoopers. The reason I had to buy this was because somebody used my old one on rock-hard Haagen Daz. NO. NO. NO. Sunbeam 25-Piece Cook's Tool Set, Black

My husband and I purchased this set when we first were married, (8 years ago) and I can tell you right now I loathed the caddy. The tools were all very cheap and within a year we had thrown every single piece away due to breaking (and also due to hating the way they felt to hold). The pizza cutter is a joke, you'd be better off using a knife. Please don't waste your money. Even for a poor college couple these were inferior.

This was a last minute purchase while buying kitchen supplies for a new home on a limited budget. And I should have spent more money. While most of the utensils serve their basic functions, the lesser pieces fail. Miserably. The vegetable peeler failed me on carrots. And when I say it failed, I mean it failed in a shocking manner. The thin gauge metal turned it into a dangerous item to hold. The spatula is in no way heat resistant. The others lack rigidity, or just plain feel cheap.

The high point of this set was that it shows that you cannot judge by packaging or pictures. It also serves as a lesson, or a reminder that you get what you pay for. And it's is also a good reason to upgrade as soon as possible.

Core Bamboo Matte Finish 3-Piece Modern Bamboo Cutlery Set, Mandarin

I have both the orange-colored painted set and also the unpainted set. The paint job on these is not done very well and I feel it makes these look "cheap" compared to the non-painted set. Don't expect the bamboo knife to work like a metal knife. It works fine for spreading, but not so much for cutting.

I am allergic to nickel i thought this bamboo ware was a good idea...as long as you dont try to cut anything

( using the fork to stablize the meat for instance)then it might be ok... ten bucks though ?

I bought this single knife as a replacement for my knife block after one of my steak knives snapped (long story). The Wusthof brand is top of the line and this gourmet collection is their best product. The steel runs through the entire wood handle providing a nice, stiff blade that doesn't loosen or wiggle after years of use. I've never had to sharpen my knives. I've never had non-serrated knives that have stayed as sharp as these.

Keep in mind, though, like all nice knives, it's best not to dishwash them because water can collect around the handle and start rusting. If you're careful drying them after dishwashing, you're probably okay, but put them on the top rack so they don't get as innundated with water.

I've ordered a (block) set of these knives and additional knives over the last couple of years. I LOVE the chef's knife. It's my favorite one. All the knives are of excellent construction. We had the red sticker come off of one knife recently, but of the 20+ knives that we have from Wustof, that is not too bad--especially after two years of heavy use and my husband letting them sit in the sink (in water). I gave it four of five stars simply because of the price--if I could have given 4.5 stars, I would have because price is the only downside. It *IS* expensive. But it's a good knife, too.

Chroma Type 301 Designed By F.A. Porsche 6 1/4 inch Japanese Veggie knife

I purchased this knife to add to my set of chroma type 301 knives. I was already sold on this line after my first purchase of the 10" chef knife. I love the angle of this knife, It adds comfort due to the upwardly inclined handle and allows you to chop quite quickly. It is well worth the price and I will continue to purchase the rest of the set. Super quality tool.

Chroma is certainly not your traditional knife brandI have Wusthof and Henckels knives as well... but this is my favorite. Generally speaking, this line of knives has a great feel in your hand and is razor sharp. Don't use a regular steel on these guysuse a ceramic steel. But you will be pleasantly surprised about what a pleasure these are to use.

As for this knife in particular, it's on the small side to be your all purpose chef's knife, but it works great for smaller fruits and vegetables.

Zwilling JA Henckels TWIN Pro-S Hollow-Edge Santoku

First, not sure what reviewers are talking about-sounds like some of them received the wrong knife and did not return it, but I'll speak specifically on the J.A. Henckels Pro S 7" Santoku Knife with Hollow Edge.

I own several knives, but I find that I use this one almost exclusively-it cuts through anything with ease and minimal force-I've used it on chicken, beef, pork chops, onions, peppers, garlic, ginger, carrots, broccoli, grapefruit... I could go on, but I suspect you get the point (and I wanted to emphasize-these are thought of as vegetable knives-it cuts through anything with ease, though I haven't-and won't-try it through bone). The only problem with it is that it cuts so well, I have to be careful not to cut things too small because its so easy to work with!

I also find that things I'd normally use a paring knife for, like mincing garlic, I'm using this. Additionally, per advertisement, nothing sticks to the side of the blade due to the hollowed out grooves. Not really sure how it works, but I don't really care. This is really a superb knife and has taken its place as my main all purpose knife.

You need to make sure that you have the "PRO S" version of this knife as Henckels has several 7-Inch Santoku knives with hollow edge and they had been shipping wrong ones in the past. However, they might have straightened out their act after I reported the mistake to their customer service. So, please, please make sure you knife says "PRO S" and has a twin tribal men on the logo.

As some of the previous reviewers posted (and some had been deleted), Amazon had been listing the wrong item here. Many people were purchasing the Henckels International Classic 7-Inch Santoku Knife with Hollow Edge, not "Part of the Pro S series of cutlery" as stated in the Amazon product review by Cristina Vaamonde or the "J.A. Henckels Professional S 7 inch Santoku knife with hollow edge" as stated in the Amazon product description. And even though the photo of the product shows the double Henckels men, the knife being shipped only had one Henckels man...another indication that it's not worth $74.99-$84.99 Amazon price or the $110.00 retail price it's listing. The International Classic knife can be purchased at Target, JCPenny and a whole bunch of other stores for the retail price of $39.99. If you paid $74.99-84.99 for the wrong knife, please get your money back!!!

My husband purchased the Pro S Santoku knife as a gift. I had been drooling over them for a year, but thought the expense was too much to put out "for a knife". But, since I am always cooking, and we felt it was a wise investment,I finally received one. I do not look at knives in the same way any longer.

First, let me say that without a doubt, the investment is WORTH IT. I knew this the first slice I made through a potato. It was as if I were cutting through butter with a hot knife. So smooth so quick. I was amazed.

Once I got used to how sharp it is (was actually proud of my first cut) and how to handle it, there is no stopping to what I can cut. I use it on vegetables of all kinds, cubing beef, and even slicing through thick sandwiches. I make sure I use the truing blade, and it's as if I just purchased it.

I am so pleased with Henckles, that I now own the cleaver, paring knife, and chef's knife. My husband and I have decided to collect the Pro S line for our kitchen. Great quality, solid handles, even weight and swift through anything you put them to. Would recommend to anyone who is looking to invest in their kitchen's hardware. I know I will be pleased with them for many years to come.

Unlike some reviewers, I did get the Pro S knife. It is an excellent knife. Good balance, feels good in the hand, very sharp and chops wallnuts as good as anything I have used. I would highley recommend this knife to anyone who appreciates good equipment in the kitchen!

Just purchased this as another step towards the Pro S set I am building. I must say that I was extremely impressed with the ease this knife chops, cubes and dices. It is RAZOR sharp out of the box, and has the nice santoku shape.

I can forsee this knife being the most used out of the entire set very versatile and easy to use.

Can't speak for longevity, but it is very well built, and I see nothing preventing this knife from lasting 40+ years.

Wallace Resplendence 65-Piece Flatware Set, Service for 12

I have a set of Resplendence and found this set on Amazon. I was so excited to add to my existing set at such a reasonable price; especially since it's a discontinued pattern from Wallace. Too good to be true :( The box,paperwork,printing looked EXACTLY like the real deal. The flatware was junk! :( It was stamped 18/10 but having real Wallace Resplendence, I could easily feel the weight difference.."extremely light". In addition, the pattern was a poor imitation with shallow detail and the thickness of the pieces were half the proper depth. Wallace Resplendence 18/10 was even stamped on the TOP side of a spoon instead of the underside. What a disappointment. I called Amazon,reported my disgust, and returned it.

We ordered 2 sets and both arrived very quickly. Its sophisticated yet uncomplicated design works well our good china as well as our everyday dishes. I actually think it is nicer in person than in the picture. Pieces are a good weight giving them a very solid feel. We use this flatware everyday and it has stood up well in the dishwasher. We are very pleased with this product.

The length of the tines are too long. I have no children at this time, but my young adult children complained the utensils are just too big to fit into their mouths. I would have returned for this reason, if the packaging was not recycled.
