These are serrated steak knives that work very well. They are more like a table knife than a sharp pearing knife. That said it is very sharp and cuts through meat well. If you are looking for something that will slice extremely thin and clean and can be sharpened this is not your knife set. But if you are looking for something better than a cheap seak knife set and can go in the dishwasher these are just perfect. I am very pleased, we have been using them for over 6 months now and they still look and cut like new.

Slightly flimsy and I wanted something more "heavy" for more formal dinner steak knives. They work well though and are sharp and somewhat serrated. Serve the purpose at an efficient cost.

Steeling your knives realigns the microscopic teeth on the knife blade (honing) and should not remove metal like a stone or file. Every other steel I could find had a grooved or file-like surface on it so I went with this one and it is great. It has a very slight texture to it like brushed metal but no grooves and is long enough to use with an 8" chefs knife. I do wish they sold a 12 or 14" version for my longer knives.

Zyliss Gourmet ShearsThese LOOK great, but WORK poorly. The hinge point is not strong enough to keep the blades together even to cut cardboard. Then, after two weeks of light use (simply because they don't work for any real duty), the handle broke off. Ugh. Waste.

This is the second pair for my mother. She loved her first pair, so when the spring metal broke, she wanted another pair. The first pair lasted about two years.

These are some heavy duty kitchen shears! There is a spring that helps as you cut so your hand doesn't get fatigued. I used this to cut chicken breasts into pieces and was amazed at how much more quickly I could do it with these shears instead of with a knife and cutting board, and it was a lot less mess too! The shears also have a locking mechanism, so you can safely store them. Plus, they were really easy to clean up! I'm going to be finding tons of ways to be able to use these shears everyday!

I bought these shears a few months ago to replace my old Zyliss shears that broke. Today my husband broke them when he attempted to trim the stems of the roses he bought me. I wasn't sure of these shears when they arrived. They came apart easily and they are very different from the first generation of Zyliss shears. The plastic piece that holds the shears together broke which is what happened with my old pair. At least with the old pair, I got a few years of use out of the shears. I am not going to buy another pair.

J.A. Henckels Couteau Series 10-piece Forged Knife SetThese knives have a number of features that set them above the cheap knives that most people accumulate in their early years of independence. They are made of good steel, so they hold an edge well. They cover the gamut of needs, from bread slicing to meat carving to full on chopping. They have a large bolster, which helps the balance and heft of the knives. For the price, they are a very good purchase for anyone who is furnishing their first solo kitchen. The only thing about the set I really don't like is that the chef's knife isn't quite tall enough for good chopping. When looking for chef's knives, one should check so see if they can perform the orbital chopping movement without their knuckles coming close to the cutting board. The 8" chef in this set will barely pass this test for a medium-sized handed person.

I received these as a gift from my BF for Christmas. Let me tell you, I did not KNOW that I was torturing myself with such awful knives until I used these! I've had them for a year now and they've held their edge thus far. They are really easy to clean (NEVER put your knives in the dishwasher, they will dull!), and I dry them completely before putting them back in the knife block. Ready some reviews on Costco about rust problems, but I haven't had any yet. Take good care of these knives and they will be good to you!

Only a few cons:

I rarely use the vegetable knife or the carving knife

My knuckles come really close to the cutting board when using the chef's knife (my hands are small-medium sized). Therefore I prefer using the Santoku for most tasks.

The pictures do not do the set justice. There is a brushed appearance to a portion of the handles and a shiny portion as well. For me, the true test of flatware is the weight. I don't like flimsy, lightweight flatware--and this set has a very comfortable weight and feel in your hand. It's a must buy.

Looks great, hefty but not heavy. Seems to do well in the dishwasher. Perfect for our everyday use.

The knives are a bit longer than the rather small space in the drawer divider.

This stainless steel flatware has an attractive pattern and looks like it will hold up well. All the pieces are larger than I expected, but maybe that's normal compared to my daintier set from 30 years ago. They are very substantial but have good balance and are not too heavy. They are nicely suited for everyday use and could be used for special occasions as well.

Zwilling J. A. Henckels Miyabi 5000S Chutoh Mid-size Utility Knife

Zwilling J. A. Henckels Miyabi 5000S Chutoh  Mid-size Utility KnifeThis is a very versatile knife to have in any kitchen.

If you're looking for an all around knife I would more then suggest the Chutoh from Miyabi. The length is perfect for any job. The design not only looks beautiful hanging up on my magnetic knife rack, it is also amazingly comfortable to hold in my hand. The knife has the quality you can trust with a Henckels Two Man, and for this price really, what are you waiting for.

I'm not a professional cook but as the person in my household who enjoys doing the cooking, I've formed some opinions on this knife. I have several other Henckels knives but this is by far the thinest and sharpest blade in my collection. The asymetric handle is contoured to fit the curvature of your palm and fingers, reducing fatigue and making it easier to be accurate with the blade. The 6 inch length is perfect. Craftsmanship and finish is very high, all the way to the kanji character engraved in the end of the grip. Nice touch for a sushi knife.

I haven't found the need to sharpen it yet as it has kept the factory edge, even after several months of fairly moderate use. This knife holds an edge! And the stainless steel makes it easy to care for, unlike high carbon steel blades which can stain or rust unless immediately dried and oiled.

This knife is ideal for fine cuts to thawed meat or poultry without bones, vegetables, and anything else that doesn't require a lot of cutting force. While sharp enough to do most of that, cutting requiring heavier force would best be done by a heavier butcher knife or a cleaver. This has become my favorite kitchen knife but IMO the slender, thin design of the blade might limit how one is likely to use it.

I bought it a few weeks ago. I guess it's a good knife except that the package of it has a few of scrapes.

The design for the knife is great. The blade is made of special formula steel. The knife can split a paper easily which shows the quality of the blade is very good. The part which is close to the handle has a radian and is smooth. This is good for washing tiny scran and help with cleaning germs. The hand feeling is also good! I like the design of it. There is a elegant kanji at the bottom of the handle. The knife is awesome!

Epicurean 23-by-14-Inch Pizza Peel

Epicurean 23-by-14-Inch Pizza Peel, NaturalThis peel costs about twice as much as aluminum peels, and about 50% more than wood. I think it's worth it:

1) Smoother than wood so the pizza slides easier. I was afraid aluminum would scratch my counters.

2) Dishwasher safe / NSF approved

3) Much lighter than wood my wife can easily sling a 14" pie with it.

4) Much thinner than wood and short handled design means it stows more easily space is at a premium in our kitchen.

5) Looks nice we serve right off the peel The aluminum ones don't look as nice and typically have long handles which can be a hazard when serving.

I have to admit that at first I felt the price wasn't justified as it's an "engineered" material. After using it for a year it's clear that the material they use is very good. Some reviews mention a chemical smell. I'm very sensitive to these smells but have not been able to detect any. Perhaps they got a bad batch? Note: I've never run it through the dishwasher, as it really doesn't fit.

We've been making homemade pizza once a week for several years. Here are my top tips:

1) Check out "Good Eats" Season 3 Episode 9 "Flat is Beautiful" for an instructional video. YouTube is your friend.

2) A Pizza stone is best and the only way to get super thin crust pizza (my favorite) I have a traditional stone, my sister uses a cast iron griddle as a "stone" with excellent results. Pan pizza in a cast iron skillet works really well too (no peel or stone needed) use oil with no cornmeal.

3) Use the hottest setting on your oven (ours is 500F)and pre-heat for AT LEAST 30 minutes. I checked with some pizza shops and they are all > 650F. This gives a crispier crust without burning the cheese. You want the stone in one of the lower racks not the top rack.

4) Brush or spray a thin layer of olive oil on top of the crust before the sauce. This helps keep the crust from getting soggy.

5) Corn meal only no oil on the bottom. Get stuff which is fairly coarse. It acts like little ball bearings. Something like Masa Harina is too fine. No oil it will smoke and set off your alarms. If your smoke alarms tend to go off, crack a window in a different room and turn on your kitchen exhaust fan.

6) Build your pizza directly on the peel. No matter how much corn meal you use you will not be able to slide the peel under smoothly if you build the pizza on the counter.

7) Give your peel a good shake to confirm that the pizza isn't sticking before you put the toppings on (After the sauce and cheese). If it's sticking at all, use a spatula to lift up the edges of the pizza and put some more corn meal down, then shake again. If you have to shake it hard after you've put the toppings on, they will get all over the place.

8) You can make pita bread with any extra pizza dough. Roll it out super thin (~1/8") and throw onto a hot stone. Check it in 2 minutes or so and flip over after it has puffed up. Be careful, they cook VERY QUICK!

We use the Kitchenaid stand mixer pizza dough recipe, but double the salt and olive oil. Alton Brown (Good Eats) also has a great recipe (note he calls for Kosher Salt, which is less dense than table salt if you use a tablespoon of table salt, it will be too much)

As a novice pizza maker, one of the best tools I've found so far is the pizza peel. This allows you the ability to place the pizza on to the hot stone, giving you the correct searing of the crust (as opposed to using a pan, which results in a soft bottom for your pizza).

Prior to purchasing this peel, I bought a cheaper wooden one from Amazon. It worked fairly well, and looked attractive hanging in the kitchen. However, it couldn't be placed in the dishwasher, and (probably due to lack of proper oiling, etc. on my part) it cracked after a few months of use.

This surface costs more, but I think will be worth it in the long run. The ability to put it in the dishwasher alone is worth the cost delta to me. Also, being able to run the pizza cutter over it without fear of cracking the board is a nice plus also.

The other distinct advantage is that this surface seems to have a lot less friction than the wood, making it easier to slide the pre-cooked dough off after it's loaded up an operation I find to be a little tricky. I'd advise using PLENTY of flour to assist in this (regardless of whatever peel you buy), but I think you'll find this Epicurean peel easier to use than wood in this regard.

I bought this item because it was dishwasher safe and could serve as a cutting surface, but did not know what to expect. After receiving and using the peel, I could not be happier. After receiving the peel, we washed it in the dishwasher, and when the cycle finished we took it out and discovered no warping, and it was ready for use. We typically sprinkle corn meal on the top of the peel, roll the dough out on the meal, and then slide it onto the hot stone in the oven. I had no trouble doing this, and I had no trouble sliding the dough back onto the peel after 8 minutes in the oven. I kept the dough on the peel while I loaded it with toppings, and slid it back in. About 10 minutes later I was able to place the peel under the pizza and slide the heavy pizza back onto the peel. Since cutting on the peel is safe I sliced and served our dinner, with very successful results.

Five stars though I ding it for the color I have the "natural" color and saw the "slate" at a friend's

"Natural" looks better (to me) for the following reasons:

1) "Slate" shows wear a lot more than the lighter color.

2) "Slate" is VERY dark so unless you have black granite countertops, it really stands out and not in a good way.

3) "Slate" looks dirty with corn meal and stuff on it think of a black car it looks dirty as soon as any dust gets on it.

Below is my review of the "Natural" color

I had read the reviews before buying, but it seemed like only a few mentioned the smell, so I figured I'd take my chances. Well, it definitely smells. I'm not a scientist and I haven't contacted the company, but I did want to share with others, that if you care about these sort of things, or have a sensitive nose, a portion of this pizza peel definitely has a strong "dissected frog"-like aroma. It's pretty gross. Due to this, I haven't used it, nor have I washed it (which, I've read, can make the smell worse). I have pin-pointed the odor (on the one I received) to come directly from the engraved "Epicurean" logo. The rest of it only smells very faintly. If I wasn't thinking of using one side as a cutting surface and the other side as a pizza peel, I might be able to overlook this issue. However, I'm concerned that the more it is cut into, the more it will smell. Of course, then my concern grows from a bad odor to, "what the heck may be leaching into my food?" It's really a shame, because I love all the other aspects of thing, Renewable Resource, Made in USA (less transportation than imported items), light, NSF-Certified, Good Size, and generally great reviews. So, 5 stars for those redeeming qualities, but minus 2 stars for such a strong formaldehyde-like odor.

I've found many great products by reading the competition's reviews, so if you're thinking about the Epicurean, but are concerned about the possibility of the odor, here's my two cents:

Despite the origins of the odor (formaldehyde or not), I'm quite picky about these sorts of things, so I think I am going to somewhat-reluctantly return this otherwise nice item and replace it with the Totally Bamboo pizza peel. It currently only has 1 review, however, other Totally Bamboo items seem to get high stars. Even though it is imported, it does seem to be otherwise eco-conscious. Oh, and there's no complaints of it smelling funny, and the description specifically states that it is formaldehyde-free. Hmmm...

Just an UPDATE: I did end up sending it back and am happy that I don't have the worry of "wonder what that smell is, on my pizza?" I LOVE the smell of garlic, so I'd be happy to have that around (it's great when we dehydrate it in the Excalibur whole house smells garlicky-goodness!!)

I ended up buying a Lodge Pro-Logic P14P3 Cast Iron Pizza Pan, Black, 14-inch which is GREAT! It works for pizza, should also work for "almost" crepes (haven't tried it yet), and makes a nice "lid" for our Lodge Pro-Logic P14W3 Cast Iron Wok, Black, 14-inch.

As an aside, sometimes we make flat bread pizzas, which fit well on something such as Norpro Stainless Steel 10 X 15 X 1 inch Jelly Roll Baking Pan, with something like these Matfer 321005 Exopat 11-5/8-by-16-3/8-Inch Nonstick Baking Mat these are examples, as we use a combo of sizes and brands for our oven and toaster/convection oven. Choose your sizes according to your needs.

We like a variety of pizza, so it's nice to have a variety of pans, especially for a party. These all work great for that purpose, as well as cookies, etc. Mmmm...

Chef'n Flexicado Flexible Avocado Slicer

Chef'n Flexicado Flexible Avocado Slicer with Plastic BladesThis item was actually a gift for my mother but I have had the opportunity to use it a couple of times, and it is awesome!!

Now, I know what some of you are thinking, "How hard is it to slice an avocado,really?" I know! I thought the same thing before I used this tool. This is a great little tool by Chef'n, that perfectly slices nine thin uniform slices of avocado for you and also cuts it away from the skin as it does so!! How cool is that? Definitely worth a buy if you value thin uniform slices that make a nice presentation or if you are slicing a bunch of avocado for salads and burgers all summer long... zip, zip, zip, All done!!

The only thing I would recommend is, contrary to the instructions, start slicing your avocados from the narrower/smaller end. The handle is quite stiff so this makes it easier on you and it lets the tool do all the work. So basically, you squeeze the handle, insert into the avocado and then drag it through, allowing the handle to open up as you go along. Voila!! Perfect slices. Really nice tool from Chef'n!! I also highly recommend their VeggiChop manual food processor, which I did buy for myself, and is so great to be able to process small amounts without all the noise of an electric.

This is the worst kitchen gadget I have ever used. I thought this would be really cool, but I was wrong. I used a wire version once and liked it, and I felt like a total retard for wasting my money on this plastic POS. This will mash your avocados instead of slice them, then you'll work twice as hard trying to clean the darned thing. Just use a knife, or if you must have a gadget try the wire one. I thought about giving this away or putting it in the box destined for charity, then decided to throw it in the garbage instead in order to save somebody else from having a frustrating time using it.

I used an avocado smaller than the tool, so I had to uncomfortably squeeze the tool until it'd fit. Then it kind of smooshed my avocado into slices that were not attractive, while leaving a layer of unused avocado in the shell.

It made me realize that it's not *that* hard to slice an avocado with a paring knife... oh well.

This product is great! There is a bit of a learning curve to use it most efficiently, but once you get the hang of it you can fly through a bag off avocados in no time. the best part is the ability to be able to squeeze the sides and make it smaller to adjust for the size of your avocado.

I absolutely loved this gadget as soon as I got it. You're not going to get it right on your first avocado, but once you figure it out, you'll have perfect slices every time.

You must squeeze it to the size of your avocado, then scoop really deep to get all the flesh.

I use this even when I want to mash my avocado, because it works better than a spoon to get everything out. If I do miss some, I just go back and scoop some more.

I took away a star because if you don't wash it immediately, it's very hard to clean and it just gets more and more nasty over time. Mine is badly discolored now. (I eat a lot of avocados.) This hasn't affected the performance, though.

I originally thought about getting a full set with a cutting block, but at the end of the day these three are sufficient for my daily use. The key is that they are very sharp and provide a firm grip. The box is nice, but it's not for storing the knives after use. I ended up getting a few plastic knife covers to protect these knives from damage and accidents.

It took 2 bottles of oil compared to 1 for the electric. For the same amount of basket capacity. This is due to the deep space between the bottom of the basket and the bottom of the pot, not to mention the smaller and larger diameters. However, once you get past that minor complaint, it is a good pot. Mind you that you get what you pay for. It is not the heaviest gauge metal in the world. But it is just thick enough so that the pot does not feel cheap.

I love Amazon as they never ever disappoint! This is the Best Deep Fryer ever! Easy to clean up, especially the basket! Nice size! One pound batch of Shrimp for example. We use a Taylor Pro Kitchen Deep Fry Thermometer in conjunction with it for accurate temps. Now mind you we've had about every type of deep fryer their is over many yrs.. I'll just say we're a senior citizens, lol. We use a gas, stove, can't speak for electric. Should be the same though, maybe a little longer getting up to temp is all. Great pot for rice, boiling water, etc. Oh, handle doesn't get hot but we use a hot pad anyway. Uses 48 oz. of cooking oil. Durability, lifetime unless ran over by a dozer are something. $10 Thermometer, once in awhile maybe but it's made pretty solid as well.
