Farberware 22-Piece Wave Edge Cutlery Set
I put these in the dishwasher even though it says not to, because I'm just not patient enough for handwashing my knives. The handles do seem flimsy, and the knives don't stay very sharp, but again-at this price, it's a fine "starter set."Two days out of the box, first knife, first use -the handle broke. Don't waste your money. Farberware used to have good products. This certainly is not one of them.

For the price paid, yes, this is a good deal. But the picture (even on the box) doesn't present, well, the true picture. The knives' edges are sharp but the wavy finish is poor & looks like it hasn't been sharpened properly. The wood on the block is cheap & you will find splinters on the bottom & inside. The grips are all plastic-y & I hope they hold up over time. My biggest gripe was against the spatulas. Not only were they of really cheap material, they were also damn tiny! Since they aren't resistant to heat, what could I use them for? This is a gift for my mom & I am not entirely happy with it, but will live with it. Including the block there are 22 items in this package. Based on the rivets the knives might be a full tang, but I am not sure.Read Best Reviews of Farberware 22-Piece Wave Edge Cutlery Set Here
I've had these knives for a little over a year. I don't use them that often and I mostly just use the smaller knives. Within this short time frame, two of the smaller knives have broken. One while chopping an onion and one while chopping carrots. The handles are the part that broke. The metal of the blade does not extend that far into the handle. Overall, it's an okay set if you are broke and need something for occasional use. This would be horrible for a real kitchen set though.Want Farberware 22-Piece Wave Edge Cutlery Set Discount?
I saw someone say that they were damaged by the dishwasher.. it is not the dishwasher. I dont even have a dishwasher and I have had one of the steak knives break on me. On the second use. You see that the handles have 3 rivets, which makes you think that the blades go into the plastic handle a bit.. but guess again. The metal tang for the blade stops before it hits even the first rivet that you see. That means that the tang only goes into the plastic handle by about an inch to maybe inch and a half. I have a set of their drop forged knife sets with full tangs that go all the way through the handles, and those are very well made, but these are just cheap starter set knives that should hold you over until you get the money to buy something decent. When you consider that you are getting the set for less then a dollar per piece, I guess they are not that bad, but if you are looking for something that will last you for years, or for the rest of your life, look at another set.As for the warranty.. I dont even remember what it is. but let me say this, if you pay a dollar for a knife and it breaks, even under warranty, is it really worth mailing back to get it fixed, after all, it will cost you about as much, if not more to mail it back for just one knife then what that one knife cost you to buy, buying in a set.. it i would actually loose money trying to send it back to get fixed. I would be better off just buying another set, and trust me, it will not be this one..
Overall, I would give the company a 3 out of 5, being that this set is cheap, but their full tang drop forged knives are very well made and will probably last you a lifetime. so if you have the money for them, get that set instead, because in the end, if you buy one set of the good ones, or 2 to 3 of these, you are paying the same or less in the end if you just buy the good set from the start.
ThinkBamboo Mini Bamboo Butcher Block Cutting Board 7" X 7" X 1"
I own quite a few small bamboo cutting boards and they all end up warping. Since these are end grain boards, they are flat, stable, and look good too.
It would've been nice if they sold them individually as I really didn't need three of them, however, they make excellent gifts so having to buy a set of 3 shouldn't be a limiting factor on the purchase.
If you need a little cutting board you will be hard pressed to find one better than this for the price. This looked like a great deal, but there is an irritating odor reeking out of it probably the glue got headache and sent it back. Did not want to be stuck with something waiting for the smell to gas out.

I get compliments all the time on this cute, sturdy little cutting board.I'm worried about making big cut marks in it so I only use it for cheese or softer things.
I also don't cut onions or garlic on it because I don't want the juices to soak into the wood and cause it to stink forever.

Farberware Classic 14-Piece Cutlery Set
Cons: The honing steel has a metal guard. Used properly, the knife should be drawn toward you during maintenance. Figure out another way, though or you will be destroying some edges. As others have mentioned, the 'stamped' steak knives look and feel cheap.
All-in-all, a 5-Star rating for price and quality. Probably the best 'beginner' set I have ever seen.(...) I'm writing from the point of mainly using grocery store knives except for my wonderful Wustof Bread Knife, which I try to use for just about everything. The block is reasonably nice (mine had two hairline cracks not noticeable enough to exchange). The knives came sharp I haven't used the sharpening tool yet. When cutting up peeled and boiled potatoes the chef knive cut them like it was going through butter. In comparison to my Wustof bread knife, this bread knife does tear a tad and the handle is a bit mightier. Also the steak knives don't sit in the slots perfectly even but they work nicely with very slight tearing. The scissors are great! This set is steel, not stainless steel. Therefore, you can not put them in the dishwasher (though the scissors have gotten in the dishwasher 2x without any problems). They suggest you hand wash and throughly dry.

These are a great set for a starter/college student. They were ranked by Consumer Reports as the best buy for knife sets, and with good reason.I was looking for a cheap set for my parents, to add to their collection of Wusthof Classics and Sabatiers, just for everyday use, soa s not to wear out their more expensive knives. Sure, these might not have the great German steel, but they also don't cost 10x as much, and with my handy electric knife sharpener, that's not really much of a problem.
You sure get a lot of bang for your buck here; the wood block is nice, no cracks. The knives are a great dealbolster, full tang, and forged steel, not stamped like in many cheaper blocks. The polypropylene handles felt a little rough, but overall weight balance felt good.
Great deal! Highly recommended.

I bought these hoping to get a good deal on a starter set. The knives arrived in good conditon. Yes they can rust but that is expected non stainless knives. While they are sharpenable, they do not hold an edge for long and i find myself having to resharpen (not just re-hone) with a stone on a fairly regular basis. If your looking for knife to hold a sharp edge, then look for a different make. Some of the cheaper Henckles international (non serrated) are good for cheap, as well as the chichago cutlery sets. Spend a few extra dollars, youll have these or whatever knives you buy for a while, its worth it.

1-05: I was pleasantly surprised when I got them as to the quality of fit and finish, but didn't know about the edge-holding and cutting ability. Well, it's now been about one year and I can report that this set is worthy of Five Stars. No rusting, holds an edge well and they are still sharp. Of course I occasionally hone with a stone and use the steel often but they have far exceeded my expectations. No prestigeous name, but just an excellent everyday forged steel set of knives.3-24-06 Update: I was shocked to have the knife edge get large dings/dents when I was trying to chop a large beef bone on a roast. My large chef knife is not usable. Totally bizarre. I'd have to knock it down to 3 stars and give a warning not to totally abuse the knives, they are not as bombproof as I originally thought. Treat them with respect and they should give you long, good service...

UPDATE 2012
The knives are working OK, not as sharp anymore. Another difference is the knives shown are riveted what I received wasn't.I was skeptical, because the price was so low. However, I was surprised at the quality of the knives and the block helps me not to cut myself. Thanks for a good product.

Prestige Pocket Coutale Sommelier
It's not difficult to see (or feel for that matter): once you hold the Pocket in your hand, you'll immediately notice the quality, the precision, and the workmanship behind the machining of the tool. The corkscrew has very little play in the handle, and the spring has just the right amount of tension on the corkscrew so as not to slip or close too easily. The foil cutter is also very effective. Many of the wine keys I've used in the past will dull quickly and begin cutting poorly (or just cut poorly to begin with), whereas the Pocket, despite having worn down the serrades, still cuts surprisingly clean. Once the corkscrew is driven into the cork, the spring-loaded two-step lever makes removal so effortless. And I don't know if the two-step lever has anything to do with it, but I've also never, ever broken a cork using the Pocket.
Comparatively, the stainless steel handle is a little heavier than my old wood handle one, making the turning feel slightly unbalanced, especially having been so accustomed to the weight of my old one. I imagine the plastic handle Pocket would feel much more balanced, but it's a minor detail that I'll soon/easily get over. Nonetheless, the quality and durability of the Coutale Pocket is definitely worthy of everyday home use or high volume bartending. From someone who works in the service industry popping onwards of 30 bottles of wine a day, the Pocket is very, very highly recommended. Five stars, all the way.

I bought this knife for my husband two years ago, and it quickly became his favorite tool in the kitchen. The knife is incredibly sharp and precise and holds its sharpness fairly well over time--we've only sharpened it once since buying it. With the exception of the wood on the handle, which is admittedly a bit cheap, this knife can easily stand up to those that cost $100 more. I just came back to buy one as a Christmas gift for someone else--at this value, I might buy a second one for us as well. I can't recommend it more.Wusthof Trident Classic Tomato Knife 5"

The Wusthof Classic is a full tang knife. This means the metal blade goes all the way through the handle and makes for a much stronger knife. (This is not the case with the Wusthof Gourmet.) The knife is very sturdy and very sharp. The serrated edges and double-point end make it perfect for cutting difficult fruit such as tomatoes, plums, etc. I gave this to my german mother for Christmas and she was ecstatic.Read Best Reviews of Wusthof Trident Classic Tomato Knife 5" Here

Years, ago, I bought a cheese wire cutter just like this from pampered chef. After 10 years of very frequent use, the wire broke, and pampered chef no longer carries this model. So I went to amazon.com and found the Osti, which looked much like my old one. I have many different kinds of cheese cutters, but this style just cuts such nice slices for sandwiches for the husband's lunch. I was so excited to find something like what I had bought years ago, that I ordered two.
Very dissatisfied as that was only a month ago, and now, neither of them work. The wires snap easily. The first one broke the first time I used it. The wire is not up to the task of passing through a normal block of cheddar cheese. The other one lasted four time before it broke.
At $17 a pop plus shipping, well I guess I will go to my local kitchen store or bed and bath and see if they have something. These were a BUST.
Even if I buy replacement wires, I will pay shipping AND have no assurance they won't bust after just a few uses. Expensive cheese cutters!I don't use this as much as I thought I would, but I love the simplicity and ease of use. It's great for making uniform slices from blocks of cheese. Exactly as described.I've been using products similar to this for years. It's easy and sturdy and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to find a quick and easy way to cut cheese.

I dearly love this knife!I started with the inexpensive but highly rated Victorinox Fibrox, but ended up being scared of using the knife because I just couldn't keep it stable despite holding it properly.
I tried this knife in a cooking class (KitchenOnFire) and fell in love immediately. This knife is very nicely balanced, with perfect heft, and it feels great in my hand. I'm not at all afraid of using it, and it performs flawlessly. It's really a joy to use.
I started with a Wüsthof 4" mini-chef's knife until I could afford the real thing. I still use that knife, but the handle cracked (no, of course I never put it in the dishwasher). I noticed the handle of the Messermeister isn't so sharp at the edges; it feels more "organic" if that makes any sense.
It really is a beautiful, thoughtfully designed knife. I'm so happy with this.

I bought this knife as a gift because I have used one just like it for years and its my favorite kitchen implement. Its very sturdy and holds its edge well despite all my abuse :-) This brand isn't one of the better known ones but it really should be as its quality is excellent!Great knife, feels good in the hand with a great weight to it (just right, not too heavy and certainly not too light as so many knives on the market seem to be). I have the 6" version, although to do it over, I'd get the 8" version. Blade has remained relatively sharp. In 3 years, I've had it sharpened only once. The only reason for a star knock-down to four from five is that the blade seems a bit fragile. I've got a pretty good nick near the top with a small indent in the blade itself. In comparison, the Chicago Cutlery 8" chefs knife I've got (handed down from my grandmother) isn't nearly as fragile of a blade and has lasted for over 30 years. All in all, a GREAT knife, especially for the price point.Le Creuset Stoneware 8-Inch Cereal Bowl
My primary concern is that the stoneware pieces are made in China (or Thailand, for the small multi-bowl.) I'm willing to pay more for Le Creuset iron because I know a certain level of workerand environmental-safety can be assumed in a product manufactured in France. The name brand on this stoneware adds a LOT to the price, but I don't know if the production deserves the price premium over attractive stoneware I could purchase at mass merchandise stores. That said, the quality of all the Le Creuset stoneware pieces I've received so far has been good--smooth edges, gorgeous color, no chips or bumps or visible flaws.
Now, as for this piece, I bought just one 8-inch cereal bowl to try out the size. I would never, EVER let my family eat a bowl of cereal this size! I use this bowl when serving a side dish like peas to my family of four. I know big dishes appeal to American audiences, but I prefer dishes that support sensible portion control.
I bought one of the Le Creuset Stoneware Multi Bowl, Small, Cassis at the same time, and, even though I will pay about 30% more per bowl, that will be my choice for actual daily "cereal bowl" use for my family. I'll get a couple more of these large 8-inch bowls to use for main dishes like teriyaki rice bowl or taco salads, and certainly to use for small serving dishes, but I don't feel I need to complete my set of dishes with 8 or 16 of these... They are just too large for my purposes. Our family has a Le Cruset dutch oven and I like that quality, so I bought 8 of these bowls in assorted colors. I should have looked more closely at the description as it clearly says it's only 6" wide.
We currently use some CB bowls that are 8", so I thought these would be a great replacement alas their product description could not be more misleading I require a true 8" bowl for the ridiculous quantity of cinnamon toast crunch I consume.

Did I just say fun? Yes, fun, for some reason I find this bowl fun to use. Go figure. It's a very nice looking bowl, and is a good size for soup or a salad. It looks great. Has a very hefty feel. And, not sure why, but I just enjoy using it. I don't actually use it for cereal, I use it mostly for soups, pasta, salads, and such. I wash it by hand, but I'm sure it will do fine in a dishwasher. It's easy to clean, though, by hand, so I just do it that way. I love the color.Yes, it's a bit pricy. But I figure for something I use and enjoy often, it's worth it.Perfect sized for pasta, soups, cereal, and other treats. Flawless construction, matches my other Le Creuset stoneware settings, and it is nice and solid. Price was great on this item, and Amazon ships these things well padded. I love it, and recommend it if this is what your looking for in a bowl.

Update: I have bought and used this Mercer Chinese knife. It is razor sharp and can cut through meat and vegetable like butter! I'd not try to use it as a cleaver as it is too light for that purpose but otherwise just a perfect kitchen knife for me.While there are much higher quality knives out there (F.Dick, Shun, etc.) This is an excellent knife for the low price. Retains a sharp edge, sturdy, nicely balanced. She isn't pretty but very very practical.

I was in the market for a Chinese style clever for the purpose of cutting up poultry. The quality of the steel was important, and especially the weight of the tool so that the piece would feel balances when cutting. I had researched the market quite thoroughly before purchasing by talking to my local Chinese butcher who uses such a tool all day long. The most important feature according to them was the weight of the tool, to heavy and your wrist gets tired, to light and the tool does not perform properly. So when I ordered this cleaver, seeing the steel was from Germany, the size looked about right, the price was mid range I expected a good tool. The write up lead me to believe the tool was made in Germany and since my other kitchen knives were from there I was expecting a quality item.To my surprise when the cleaver arrived it was made in Taiwan although the item was stamped "steel made in Germany". The quality of construction however is good and the tool will last for many years if given reasonable care. The weight of the tool was not what I had expected from the picture, no weight on the item as given in the write up. The clever was made from very lightweight steel. The blade is however extremely sharp and does hold a good edge, a few strokes with a steel brings back the edge just fine. It should have been advertised as a knife, not a clever. It does cut up vegetables quite well, you can smash garlic with it and it will cut the back out of a chicken perfectly and disjoint a chicken just fine. However as a cleaver it is not, so if you are planning on using the tool for that purpose I would not recommend it.

I bought this knife for my husband's birthday present. I bake all our bread and my husband cuts it all. This is a lovely knife, great for displaying, VERY sharp and works well on cooled bread. We both like the lifetime warranty that comes with the knife. The wood is beautiful and has a lustrous finish. I don't think the pictures do justice to the item's actual appearance. I feel it was well worth the price paid. That said, I want to let you know why I rated it a 4 instead of a 5. My husband found it doesn't work well on that still-warm-from-the oven loaf. Since the serrations are rather large and far apart, on the freshest loaves the knife tends to tear rather than cut the slices. This seems a small thing over which to lose a star, but 5 of 5 stars should be reserved for near perfection. The issue of the fresh bread means this isn't a perfect knife. It's a small issue for us because we have another bread knife that cuts the still-warm loaves, but another purchaser might not, and would have this issue.
