It's a nice granite look rubber cutting board but I hate the nicks left by constant cutting. Will work until I get something more durable.

I've had my very own black granite board for 2 weeks now. It rocks.

For 5 years, I've been feverishly cutting, dicing, and slicing on a set of white plastic boards from IKEA. I only ever used the large one--really, when do you need just the small one? At this point, it's gotten so knicked up I fear I'm ingesting more extra harmful bacteria than my immune system can handle.

Enter--this fabulous cutting board. It's pretty, which earns it some points, and super easy to whip in and out of the cupboard (it easily fits in the same one I keep cookie sheets in) with its handle. Its rubberized grip keeps it firmly planted on the counter so I don't unwittingly fling little bits of onion into the eyes of innocent bystanders. Unlike other reviewers, I haven't noticed nicks yet. I do keep my knives super sharp with sharpening stones and a leather strop (maybe that helps?). If you don't, I highly recommend it--plus you get the added bonus of telling people you use a leather strop.

The only con would be the meat cutting side. Somehow I overlooked that small detail when I ordered. I thought the cutting board was the same on both sides. Alas. I'm a vegetarian, so I don't have a use for that side. Or at least, my creativity hasn't rose to the challenge.

Summary: It's a cutting board. It works. It's big enough for whatever your heart desires, but not too big. Goldilocks would approve. Happy chopping!

Totally Bamboo 20-2038 Bamboo Cutting Board Set, 2-Board SetWow, these are terrible. I was really excited about them but they are terrible for two reasons. One, they stink. Really bad. And it doesn't matter how many times you wash them, they still stink. And second, they shed like crazy. There is no way of getting all the tiny fibers to stop coming off of these boards. Terrible, terrible product. Don't make the same mistake I made.

These are good cutting boards but the smell is bothersome to me. I am afraid to use this board to cut certain foods because of fear of contaminating my food with the smell. The quality is very good and it definitely will not harm your expensive knives, but buyer be aware of the smell.

I have had cutting boards before, some great, some not-so-great, and currently have two very large ones hand-crafted out of maple which I have had for years and which are wonderful for big jobs. They have held up well over the years with the proper care. I had been considering purchasing more for sometime, particularly in smaller sizes as use one of the large ones for such tasks as slicing a single tomato or onion is a bit of over-kill.

I found these in Amazon Warehouse Deals for $7.99 (and eligible for Free SuperSaver Shipping). I placed them on my wish list and ordered them the other day to round-out an order to over $25 to qualify for Free SuperSaver Shipping. I have never had bamboo cutting boards before, but decided to take a chance on them. I must say the grain in them is gorgeous, and I was surprised by the light weight, having used the much heavier maple cutting boards for so long. As I have only had these for a little while I cannot yet comment on their longevity, but will say they seem to be constructed as well as any of the other cutting boards I have seen out there.

These are perfect for smaller jobs, and now I don't know why I waited so long to try them. The smallest one is perfect for slicing a single tomato or onion. The larger one is perfect for a loaf of home-made bread. While I will still use my larger cutting boards for the bigger jobs, these are a nice addition to our kitchen ~ and Amazon Warehouse Deals had them here on the date they estimated they would ship them. I am very pleased.

Excellent quality and just the right sizes to produce efficiency in the kitchen when prepping foods. I never used bamboo cutting boards before and was surprised how well they work. No warpage like my old plastic ones, either. Hard enough to stand up to repeated cutting and dicing but soft enough to prevent premature dulling of knives. What a wonderful idea. I highly recommend this set. The value for the money is very high.

These are wonderful cutting boards and perfect for my small kitchen. They are half the thickness of other wooden cutting boards and pleasingly lightweight, but very strong and rigid. With a small kitchen and limited counter space, I cannot leave my heavy maple cutting board out on the counter all the time. Have been using a plastic cutting board for everyday chopping, as it's easily stored by propping against a counter wall out of the way, but I hate plastic boards. These thin, lightweight bamboo boards are the ideal compromise solution for me real wood, easy on good knives, very good looking boards, strong and solid, but lightweight and thin enough like the plastic boards to deftly prop against a wall or in dish rack out of the way when I need the counter space for other tasks.

No bad smell at all on my boards. Baffled by the nasty comments from "John Kong" and "Daniel Orr". And "shedding"?? That's crazy, shedding what? The boards are not "flimsy" either. They are just not writing about the same product I have in my hands. Or they are trolls...

I'm so glad I bought these boards, I'm thinking about buying another set to stash away for future use. This cook is delighted with the product.

Kershaw 9900 Series 9-inch Stainless-Steel Sharpening Steel

Kershaw 9900 Series 9-inch Stainless-Steel Sharpening SteelA honing steel is used to straighten the tiny rolls in a knife's edge. About 6-12 passes on each side of the knife will be sufficient for most knives to bring the slightly rolled edge back in line and return the knife to razor sharp. This only works if you don't allow your knife to get very dull. If it gets sufficiently dull you have to sharpen (remove metal) on stones or diamond plates/paddles, ceramic rods, or with another sharpening method. Honing, in contrast, does not remove metal. It straightens the rolled parts of the edge. If you hone each time after you've washed and dried your knife you will maintain the edge and won't have to sharpen it very many times per year.

This honing steel does NOT have diamonds in the surface. It is a hardened steel rod that, being harder than the knife blade, is able to straighten the rolled edge. Honing steels with diamond particles remove metal and thus sharpen while straightening the edge as well. I recommend this type of honing steel because it allows you to simply straighten the edge instead of constantly removing metal, which shortens the life of a knife. I'm sure some people prefer a sharpening steel with diamonds, but I prefer one without them. If I want to sharpen I use 3M wet/dry silicon carbide sandpaper, a Wicked Edge Precision Sharpener or my Spyderco Sharpmaker. Using this honing steel after washing and drying the knife after use for food prep maintains the razor sharp edge. When the edge has been damaged too much to respond to honing it's time to resharpen the knife. Depending on the edge geometry and steel used in your knife you might need to sharpen once a month or as infrequently as once a year or less.

This Kershaw steel is decently heavy, which is something you want. If the steel is too light you have to be careful to not let the knife move the steel, which could lead to accidental injury. If the steel is too thin it will wear out sooner. This one has a comfortable handle and the steel has good length and diameter to allow for easy, safe honing and for long term use. I got this on sale for $15. I wouldn't pay more than $20 for a honing steel when one like this can be had inexpensively and it will work well.

Kershaw is a name brand of pocket knives. The brand is owned by KAI, which produces Shun kitchen knives, Kershaw pocket knives, and their more "tactical" line of pocket knives called Zero Tolerance, among other things.

Product worked as it should for a sharpening steel (it really just takes of the rolled edge of a blade, honing). The handle is the only complaint very bulky feel, but it does serve its purpose in regards to making your grip easier when honing. You really can not go wrong with Kershaw every knife I have is my blade of choice when cooking, rather than my four stars.
